TheAnimatorOfficial 567 January 3, 2017 Share January 3, 2017 If they made the girls white and then the rest mixed race would they really face backlash (or even controversy)? I mean come on, the Doug-style coloring on the characters' skin is plain hideous and distracting except for Applejack, arguably Sunset, and anyone who resembles human pigment. On that note, why is everyone extremely thin except Snails? Again, highly doubt anything erupts and/or Hasbro loses sales on toys (little girls don't care). There should have been more variety in body type; and I'm a hater of the SJW movement. Finally, the outfits for the girls. Admittedly I like Sunset's leather jacket and Applejack's cowboy shirt, but does everyone have to wear short skirts and high boots? I totally understand Rarity and Pinkie wearing skirts and Applejack wearing boots, but otherwise the total lack of creativity there poorly represents the characters' personalities. For example, Applejack should be wearing denim jeans instead, Rainbow Dash should be wearing Jordans, Fluttershy should be wearing more spring-type shoes like sandals or run down sneakers, etc.
Clod 8,294 January 3, 2017 Share January 3, 2017 People would get pissed at whatever skin they had been given. If they were white, SJW's would attack it. If they were not white, people would say they were catering to SJW's. There was no solution while giving them human skin colors. As far as the clothes go, it's probably for toy sales.
pnylvr 185 January 3, 2017 Share January 3, 2017 Hasbro presumably designed the characters based on what they thought would sell the most toys. We're not the target demographic here, remember, nor is artistic quality Hasbro's primary concern.
Tarnation 142 January 3, 2017 Share January 3, 2017 What I can say is that in CHS they probably make it a rule to wear boots. 1 <p> best pony .......... And what in TARNATION?!

ihhh 30 January 6, 2017 Share January 6, 2017 And yet it's perfectly ok for all the pony mane six to have unrealistic colors and the same body type?
cmarston1 5,959 January 7, 2017 Share January 7, 2017 I don't see anyone complaining about how the mane 6 ponies (before Twilight became an alicorn) all have the same body type. The same goes for pretty much most ponies in the show for the first couple of seasons as well. I am also kinda annoyed with all the people saying that Rainbow Dash and Applejack shouldn't wear skirts. Even if they are the most tomboyish of the mane 6, they have willing wore dresses multiple times in the show itself, and even agreed to the fashion show in Suited for Success. For the whole pastel color of the humans thing, the first movie was already controversial enough without people freaking out over the mane six not being the races in their headcanons, or accusations of Hasbro pandering to SJWs if the cast was racially diverse. The only things that I would want changed with the designs would be to get rid of some of the excess cutie mark symbols on their outfits, like the diamonds and butterflies on Rarity and Fluttershy's skirts, or the apples on Applejack's boots. I would also wish that the designs would match up more with the more detailed ones found in the animatics.
Number62 1,258 January 11, 2017 Share January 11, 2017 When I initially saw the first movie, the outfits especially on the Mane characters, and maybe the background girls besides the principals as well, stood out to me. They are, as you said, lacking in variety because they only wore skirts and knee-high boots. I'm no fashion fanatic, but that lack of variety makes no sense even if the characters happen to have similar tastes in clothing and designs because they look like unintentional clones of each other. Thrond 3,263 January 11, 2017 Share January 11, 2017 The usual thought seems to be that making the Girls pastel colours was to avoid controversy, but maybe it was also to make identification a little easier. This might not have been an issue as much with EqG, but I find the way some fan artists draw the mane six as humans is nearly unrecognizable. And yeah, the rest is definitely just to sell toys, although who the hell knows why everyone's wearing boots. Not like this is the most realistic world, I guess; could just be the usual fashion in EqG's humanland. That said, the movies do seem to have been moving away from the skirts, which I appreciate greatly. I am also kinda annoyed with all the people saying that Rainbow Dash and Applejack shouldn't wear skirts. Even if they are the most tomboyish of the mane 6, they have willing wore dresses multiple times in the show itself, and even agreed to the fashion show in Suited for Success. Well, for one, I don't think skirts would be particularly convenient for what they're doing a lot of the time (sports and farm work, respectively), and the dresses argument doesn't really hold up, because the skirts most girls in the movies wear are clearly casual. I dunno if the States or Vancouver (where MLP is animated) are different, but nobody where I went to high school wore a skirt.
Ganondorf8 11,311 January 11, 2017 Share January 11, 2017 I'll admit that their choice in clothes didn't make much to sense to me upon watching the first Equestria Girls movie, yet over time I gradually got used to them and now I no longer see it as an issue. I will say though that Sunset's outfit in Friendship Games is a lot better than the one she was given in the first two movies. Also, Sunset's hair colour was desaturated to coincide with her second outfit and also to signal that she had become a nicer person than who she used to be.
Unikitty 1,212 January 11, 2017 Share January 11, 2017 (edited) Why do all these ponies gotta be all these weird colours? What happened to REAL horse colours? Gee fam I dunno. Maybe they're coloured like they are because it's a cartoon, and the colours are reflective of their pony versions. Sounds like a whole lotta crying over nothing. I doubt it had anything to do with the race claims. It's a cartoon not a political statement. Edited January 11, 2017 by Unikitty
