the Battle for Sugarbelle one did drag on for much longer than it needed to lol... but yeah I am not fond of the party planner song, bc I think everything about the cheese sandwich episode is overrated...

I don't mind BBBFF, either. At least, not on its own. Unfortunately, it tried to convince us that Twilight and her brother had a tight sibling relationship despite the fact that we didn't know she had a bro at all till ACW. If he was introduced at some other point in the series or if ACW was written differently to reflect their bond better, then it might be better received.

That makes sense. It only just occurred to me how strange it is that the one and only brother she loves so much never wrote or visited, same for her. Even now, their relationship seems to be amicable, but not super close. I dare say Twilight seems to be more bonded to baby Flurry than the parents, lol!

I would say either Cutie Mark Crusaders Song, or the Cloudsdale Anthem. If those don't work, then I would say the Flim Flam Miracle Curative Tonic. To be honest, I wasn't really a fan of that song.

"Battle for Sugar Belle" is a pretty lame genre pastiche. Probably the only song in the series that I actively dislike the tune of.

There's a few others I find underwhelming, however. Some of the worst examples are:

  • The song from "The Show Stoppers." Duh.
  • For whatever reason, the harmonies in "Hearts Strong as Horses" don't sit right with me, and I've never liked the repetitive chorus.
  • "Make This Castle a Home" is nice but super derivative of earlier songs in the show.
  • I've always felt that "I'll Fly" just isn't very catchy.
  • "Derby Racers" - which I completely forgot existed - is pretty derivative of earlier songs as well, and the lyrical content is just no fun at all.
  • love "The Fault in Our Cutie Marks," but "Find the Purpose in Your Life" is, again, just not very adventurous for this show.

The show's overused formulas for its songs was one of my earliest issues with it; I've become much more fond of "B.B.B.F.F." and "The Ballad of the Crystal Empire" over time, but they sound fairly similar to each other, and I wouldn't necessarily call either among my favourite songs in the show even though I do like them.

Mostly, though, I tend to dislike songs based on lyrical content, which is especially frustrating when some of the more musically interesting songs have lyrics which bother me so much.

  • "Magical Mystery Cure" has plenty of interesting compositions, but listening to any one of those songs makes me way too mad to appreciate them.
  • "Bats!" just feels really unbalanced to me. Why is Applejack being demonized? Why are Fluttershy's friends being so aggressive towards her?
  • "You'll Play Your Part" has some nice swells, but its verses aren't that interesting and the lyrics are way too vague. Plus, my dislike of "Magical Mystery Cure" prevents me from fully believing that Twilight has a place as a princess.
  • I don't really understand the point of "Best Friends Until the End of Time." It's way too simplistic and derivative to be interesting on its own, but it's the context which really bugs me. Is it supposed to be a joke about how dysfunctional Trixie and Starlight are? That's not funny at all!
