I mostly played Age of Empires II and The Conqueror's Expansion (My favorite among the series). Just playing The beta version of The Forgotten Empires and it's awesome.

I also played the original Age of Empires as well along with the Rise of Rome Expansion (2nd favorite) and Age of Empires 3 (my least favorite) to some extent.

Haven't tried out the Multiplayer option nor do I know how it works on AOE2 and AOE1.

I remember never being good at these kinds of games, but I just found the visuals in these games pretty amazing for their time and they still hold up IMO. Nowadays, getting used to it . My playing skills is somewhere between Intermediate and Expert.

Has anyone tried these RTS games?

I used to play Age of Empires II all the freaking time when I was in the Navy.  In fact, I actually created a Random Map Script called "Endless Forest" that was inspired by a custom map my one friend made called "Woodland Wars".  It is essentially Dark Forest turned up to 11 with scattered buildings (some pretty useful some not so much) and ruins in the various small clearings throughout the dense forests that the first player to discover them could capture.  I even had 5 different modes for this map based on Mesoamerica, Scandanavia, the Middle East, Europe & Asia.  Last time I checked this random map was still the most popular as well as one of the top-rated random map scripts on the Age of Empires II customization section of Heaven Games with over 11K downloads. :D

More recently, though, I've tended to play Age of Empires III (and I'm still trying to figure out what happened to my copy of the Warchiefs expansion so I can get that re-installed on my current system), not just because I really like its visuals & gameplay, but also because the time period it covers (1500 ~ 1880) is, IMO, one of the more interesting periods of history (been working on leveling up my Dutch home city on my most recent reinstall).

I enjoyed AoE 2 and, to a lesser extent, 3 (never quite hit the mark, although the deck-building aspect was rather good fun.) Young as I was at the time, I wasn't particularly good and probably wouldn't even if I got back into them (I'm faaaar to greedy to play RTS games well - why spend on a military when you could try and rush the final age / tech level? Wait, you attacked me and burnt down my only guard tower? How uncivilised!)

One game that I played quite a lot of was Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds, which was AoE but with Star Wars - that was excellent fun, and it had a full set of campaigns that had clearly had some thought put into them. The only thing I didn't like was upgrading my base-level tie fighters to the better models, none of which looked as good (and similar cases with other units.)

I never really got on with the expansions; I'm not sure why, as I usually like new factions with different play-styles.

Whisper, The City of Darkness;    Carto Sketch  - The Dark Millennium

Participating in this RP can be agonizing sometimes.

I probably logged thousands of hours across AoE1 and AoE2, expansions included.

Though, I enjoy AoE2 more. I've also learned, along time ago, that the 'best' unit are the Paladins. Get 20-40 of those guys and you can take our a pretty large city. Now fully upgraded? You've basicly won the match.

I have up to the most recent DLC for the steam version

Still trying to figure out how the Multiplayer option works.

Anyway, here are my favorite civilizations to use in both AOE1 & 2,

AOE1: Persians, Romans, Choson

AOE2: Saracens and Byzantines

It too me years to realize that this game is all about creating enough military units and siege to overwhelm your opponent's. So being thrifty and efficient with your resources doesn't pay off sometimes. You need to learn to utilize gold-intensive units wisely while you mostly harass the enemy's civilization with "Trash" units (aka units that cost no gold).

AoE II was my childhood! It is absolutely amazing. I still remember attacking my opponents' castles with cars :P

CHEATER!!!

Nah I kid. Cheating in AOE games is so oddly satisfying. AOE1 had the best cheats while AOE2 is 2nd best. LOL at AOE2's car cheat.

A Shelby Cobra car that can shoot infinite bullets . Get 20 of these and you basically won the game.

I played Age of Empires III and all its expansion packs, really loved Warchiefs when it was combined with Asian Dynasties. I was in the habit of playing Native American tribes and using the ritual fire pit to its fullest extent, which if you ask me, was pretty OP when it was fully filled with dancers set to increase unit production.

AOE II was something I could never get into, despite being a huuuuuuuuuuuuge fan of the game with the same engine, Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds.
