Denim&Venöm 18,978 October 11, 2017 Share October 11, 2017 Equestria girls exists in an odd state as far as cannon. Not debunked, but never officially acknowledged in show or novels outside it. Is the movie in the same situation?
blackstarraven 142 October 11, 2017 Share October 11, 2017 -I know that this should be a non-required thing at this point but- SPOILERS... Maybe a little. I'm going to assume so. But I don't expect it to be referenced all that much ether. I don't think its going into DragonBallZ movie territory. Where the movies are just flat out not cannon and are more or less "other world" stories. But it may end up in Garlic Jr Territory... Where it DOES actually end up referenced, just in a way that does not require the movie to be watched.... (Let me explain that if your not a DragonBall Fan) - I don't think we are going to get a episode where they talk about "That one time that X did Y" In reference to the movie. But we may very well get a episode where they use assets from the movie. I.E. We may get a episode with Hippogriffs or something. - If they did make the movie Sub-Cannon... I would love for them to just use Tempest as a background pony or a reference every now and then.. Like.. As a royal guard or something. (Actually don't they need a new Captain of the guard?) Actually now that we mention it.. Twilight's Tree Really needs guards already....
Ashen Pathfinder 16,161 October 11, 2017 Share October 11, 2017 As far as I know the movie is 100% canon. It probably won't be referenced all that much if at all, but Big Jim does state that it lies between season 7 & season 8. Really, I haven't seen any indication that it won't be considered canon at this point. 1 Pathfinder I Sojourner I Corsair | Zu'hra I Autumn | Scarlet Willow | Gypsy | Silverthorn | Crystal Whisper | Radiant Historia | And many other OCs~ Matching signatures with mah Bestie MOONLIGHT <

Really, I haven't seen any indication that it won't be considered canon at this point. I really don't think the movie was meant to take at any one particular point in the series. Everything about the film very much points to it being standalone, and any hints at continuity past season 4 only boil down to cameos that were thrown in for fan-service and nothing else. In essence, we aren't really meant to think about it, which in terms of who it was aiming for I think was for the better. Spoiler Also, the season finale very briefly mentions seaponies, so that alone disproves Jim's theory.

Kyoshi Frost Wolf 41,496 October 11, 2017 Share October 11, 2017 I believe it is canon in the sense that there will be aspects from the movie that are mentioned in the show itself. The fish people, the sea ponies which already have been mentioned, and potentially characters, though that last one is less likely. As others have mentioned, the movie supposedly takes place between seasons 7 and 8, but I feel like that is putting it backed up in a corner in terms of events. Which, this means that it takes place between the two seasons by way of references, like to characters and such. This is what I feel the movie will be going forward, referenced a bit. AlbaTross 1,586 October 11, 2017 Share October 11, 2017 As someone who is sick of the B canon is non-canon notion and wishes it would just die a horrible death, I can say that I have no trouble accepting the movie as canon, seeing how I accept all spinoff media as canon until such time as it's contradicted in the show. If you're actually wondering whether the movie is A canon or not, I would say, maybe. I've heard rumours that the characters from the movie might appear in season 8, but I'll believe it when I see it. If they do make an appearance or even if they're just acknowledged, then the answer will be yes. However, I will not presume to know anything about season 8 at this point in time.
blackstarraven 142 October 11, 2017 Share October 11, 2017 Well to answer to a comment before. There are no real indications that it is not going to be cannon. But as to the indication that it 100% is or that its between season 7 and 8. - Well let's address a few things. #1: It can't be 'planned' that way. Literally the movie crew had no ideal what Season 7 would be like. The Movie has been in production for two years. That's why we only get Cameo Shots of Starlight and she does nothing. That's why they don't go to the Changelings for help. Or the Dragons or anything like that. Because those events had not taken place when the movie started production or the story was finalized. #2: Even the connections we have are in fact not able to be fitted into the ideal that it was planned. The mentioning of sea ponies ignores that we only find out about the sea Pony thing in the movie. Thus any reference was not planned to be a tie in. So... While we may get references to the movie in season eight, Its not likely we are going to get references that requir you have watched the movie.
TBD 17,254 October 12, 2017 Share October 12, 2017 Another add to my comment, while I believe the movie is canon (I mean why not?) I don't support the part about re-announcing the new characters into the series. Especially Tempest... Spoiler (which I hope she kept the name) Because think about it, she would be another Starlight Glimmer who try to adjusted her new life in a better way. We certainly don't need another repetitive route that Starlight and Sunset is taking. I rather have Tempest not stay in the ponyville (or in equestria) and travel off in a ship around the world and discover herself though that. And re-appear when she need to, to avoid being one of the boring and dragged characters. Same goes with the others new characters. 1 ♪ "I practice every day to find some clever lines to say, to make the meaning come through"♪
Tiny Hoofs 200 October 12, 2017 Share October 12, 2017 DID SOMEBODY SAY CANNON? In all seriousness, I've never seen anything suggesting it isn't canon. We even have an idea where it fits in with the timeline of the show. According to Big Jim it's set between season 7 and season 8.
Jeric 46,851 October 12, 2017 Share October 12, 2017 Spoiler Yes it is cannon. As far as the Season 7 finale mention, it is not unreconcilable, and a clever person can actually connect that etiquette book to Rainbow Rocks. Season 8 is expected to feature a character called Silver Stream who was announced as a Seapony, but may show up as a Hippogriff student in Twilight's school. It's canon. As far as production, Meghan has stated that they were constantly altering the script as they were boarding and animating, adding things as they went along. Considering at least one Season 6 script was approved in 2014, the show has been longer planned than you guys think.

And honestly, I kind of think he is, since everything about the film points to it being standalone. It is indeed canon, don't get me wrong, but it is in a sense where it really could've taken place anywhere between seasons 5 through 7. The cameos don't count because they were thrown in long after the film was scripted.
