Are you sure about that? Considering the original plans that Lauren Faust had for poor ol' Spikey Wikey, it doesn't seem too farfetched.

^I have no idea what you're talking about and frankly would like to keep it that way.

 

Killing off Spike or any of the established characters would be an absolutely idiotic thing to do.

It's not a huge deal, and it's more of a joke; it's not to be taken seriously. Whether or not he loses interest in Rarity in the show will be shown, I highly doubt that they would do anything major with it. Rarity doesn't even really see him that way, just that he is cute the same way other ponies see him.

I would say that the reason Sparity should end is because it's become stagnant. In the early seasons they actually did something with it. There was a dynamic between the two characters that lead to interesting stories and funny jokes. But now there is nothing. No stories. No character development, Not even jokes. It's just ... there. Like a bad smell you can't get rid of. The poor guy now just simply endures a one sided love affair that just isn't going anywhere. For a show that's big on progression, for this to just linger around is sad.

If they are not going to do anything with it, they should end it and let Spike move on.

I agree on the age thing since Spike is clearly too young for romance. But i don't think different species is a problem. Scorpan's parents are different species. Flash and Sunset are different species. Discord seems to like Fluttershy as more than just friend and it is also a dfferent species. There is nothing wrong for that to be a thing since all of them are sapient creatures.

They need to make an episode about Spike "dumping" Rarity

Maybe it's not romance but a very strong friendship. 

My opinion is that this "romance" has continued for too long, and nothing has happened in time. However, they both care a great deal, which means that their friendship is something much stronger than mere friendship.

Exactly this! Their friendship can stay, their close bond! No doubt about that! It's just the crush that needs to go. Doesn't serve any purpose anymore.

That's why it is gone? Spike blushing occasionally at Rarity doesn't mean he thinks he has a chance or anything with her, she is just very pretty and he likes her. It's not even a story element anymore so why complain about it?

It seems character degrading, my friend. Like ya said, it's not a story element anymore. Why keep it around?

It isn't kept around, it had a natural end at the end of Secret of my Excess, and now Spike occasionally and very rarely blushes or offers to help Rarity. It's not degrading to like someone even if you know you don't have a chance with them. Like comon now, how much sparity was there in season 7? Like none.
