Wouldn't *Pinky* Pie be an Alias?

Unity

Recommended Posts

I was just thinking

Pinky Pie isn't her real name. At least Pinky isn't.

an Alias is pretty much a name you go by that is other than your real name.

And since her name is Pinkamena than Pinky is an Alias which is not her real name.

thoughts?

Obviously. Pinkie is an Alias. Just like Maud (Maudalina Daisy Pie). It's just that simple.

Well, Maud has a nickname which i would say is different from an Alias.

Pinky is an Alias because "Pinky" is not even in her name, unlike maud.

I think I am not getting what you might trying yo say. I mean such as:

Maudalina>Maud-alina> Maud

Pinkemena > Pinke-mena> Pinke (Pinkay) and eventually Pinkie

Does that make any sense?

So a nickname is a shorter version of a name.

Thomas>Tom

Matthew>Matt.

Maudalina>Maud.

Pinkamena>Pinky does not work because changing your name and not shortening it is not a nickname.

And if that is what you go by it would make it an Alias.

There are a lot of nicknames like that. Bob is a common nickname for Robert, though they don't even have the same first letter. Some can even be totally different, such as Peggy for Margaret! I definitely consider Pinkie a shortening of Pinkamena in spite of the added "ie" and the corresponding sound.

An alias is more of an alternative identity, and I wouldn't say Pinkie is pretending to be somepony else than she is...

Its small but important.

Pinka>Pinky that would be replacing a letter which in turn makes it a false name i would say.

While most Alias's are more serious this is a completely different name if you ask me.

Pinky Pie and Pinkamena Pie are not the same names.

Okay. So that's the case. I think it's the same way with Thomas and Tom.

Thom would feel really odd, don't you think.

Thats what crossed my mind.

My roommate's name is Thomas but he is known as Tom.

I will do my best to explain what i think about this.

it is Removing, or replacing a letter, but it has to be in your name, for instance.

Thomas>Tom would, Thom would sound weird so they could remove the "H" to make it a viable name.

Pinky could not because Pinkamena does not have a "Y" that she can move to make her name Pink*Y* Pie.

Well, that's true.

Pink Pie. (Say that again and again and you'll sound like you're saying Pinky Pie)

Isn't an Alias or Avatar usually meant to be something COMPLETELY different from your usual name? I don't think nicknames qualify. An Alias for Pinky (I'm just going to assume this is the name of her Ninja persona because that's fun) would be Duchess Cupcake.

I really think Cynth would only work for Cynthia.

Pinkamena does not have Pink in it so it cannot be shortened to Pinky.

Ok so what i am talking about is this.

If Pinkamena is her actual name. that is Pinkamena, not Pinkyamena i consider a nickname to be a name you can form with slightly changing or removing letters from your actual name.

You cannot form Cindy out of Cynthia, just how you cannot form Pinky out of Pinky because you are missing that Y at the end and it is not in your name so you cannot move it around.

make sense?

I meant to say this earlier but you have been misspelling her name the entire time. It's not Pinky, it's Pinkie. So please before you try to argue with people, check that you are ACTUALLY right beforehand.

On another note, Pink IS in Pinkamena. You can see it right there. Pink-amena

Peggy is a nickname for Margaret. Jack a nickname for John. Joey a nickname for Joseph. Maddie a nickname for Madison.

You may want to read more books. That's the only reason I can see for your lack of understanding here.

I have absolutely no idea how Peggy is a nickname for Margaret since they only have about 2 letters in common.

I don't see anything saying what makes something a Nickname and something an Alias. Jack is a completely different name than John which makes no sense whatsoever.

and also I have read plenty of books.

No Pinkie is a nickname

Definition of nickname

1: a usually descriptive name given instead of or in addition to the one belonging to a person, place, or thing

2: a familiar form of a proper name (as of a person or a city)

merriam-webster

Definition of alias

: otherwise called : otherwise known as —used to indicate an additional name that a person (such as a criminal) sometimes uses

John Smith alias Richard Jones was identified as the suspect.

merriam-webster

Its clear via these definitions that an alias is meant to hide your name. Whereas nickname is simply meant to be endearing or shortened. The difference is the intent. The two are close enough to be almost interchangeable. BUT the fact is that the intention is there so they can be separated.

So if its a shortened name or name that was given by friends/family to you as a term of endearment then its a nickname

If its a name used by you to hide your real identity like a pen name or so forth then its an alias.

That is literally all the ever needed to be said on this topic.

Not really. My nickname is Cindy. It isn't my alias. An alias  is a false name you pick yourself to shield your real identity. A nickname is something that sort of springs up, when family and friends use a diminutive of your name. In this case, Pinky is the established diminutive of Pinkamena. Don't forget, her coat is also pink. Thus, she grew up being called Pinky. It sounds better than Pink. Although on at least one occasion she has been called Pink on the show. Don't forget, Mike is also a long standing nickname for Michael. So is Micky for that matter. I personally know a man everyone calls Red, including his wife. (he has flaming red hair) That's his nickname, even though his given name is Jonathan.

This is the last I'll say on it, because I don't want this to drift into a mean spirited thread.
