technology How does the SD card in the Oculus Rift headset work?

I’m planning on buying an Oculus Rift VR headset eventually and I’m not familiar with everything that it offers. At the moment, I’m concerned with one listing that has 32G of built in memory but I’m unsure how it’s used. I believe it’s supposed to be in a card, but that’s all I know. Does it go in a PC just for the games? Do I need to put games on there first before I use the card? Where is the card found? Any tips on what the memory system does would be very helpful. My laptop buy itself has little to no memory so I’d have to be completely dependent on this built in memory.

So this is only from what I've read, but the Oculus Go has some problems. First is that Oculus is a Facebook company, so do with that what you will. Second, while there are ways to expand the space of your VR headset, it's almost exclusively done via your internet connection and a bit of technical know how and some finagling. There is, from what I know, no 'official' way to increase the space of the actual unit itself. 32 gigs isn't very much, and probably a considerable chunk is taken up by software. Third is that the headset is fully self contained, and while if you have no computer that can be a massive boon, it can also suck. Most of how you set the thing up is through Android, so if you have mainly used iPhones for several years, best of luck to you. Also, you can't just load in your Steam games or any other gaming social profile you've got. Because it's powered only under it's own self contained unit, from what I've read the battery is sort of lacking, and it just doesn't have to power of some of the other headsets.

Please keep in mind this is only based off of what I've read, so some of this info may be incorrect. My personal opinion is pass on this. While it's a cool toy, I don't see this lasting a long time, but I'm not you.

So, it won’t work? I don’t have many options cause the game I want uses Oculus, a PS4 (which I don’t have), or another wall headset that costs $1,000. I AM using a PC and not a phone, so there might be a benefit there. I really only want one game right now and it only uses up 8G (the minimum space for a VR game) so there’s that factor too. It IS from Steam so if that doesn’t work I’m not sure what I’ll do but loading it on the PC itself won’t work even if I were to delete almost everything off of it, which I don’t want to do.

So apparently I was wrong and there is an open source project that allows you to hook your headset into Steam, but it’s going to take some technical knowledge to get it functional. Additionally it won’t be as immersive as a more expensive unit as it only has 3dof (directions of freedom) where as the Rift has 6. However, if you think that you would get enough enjoyment out of the one game, that’s great. Just be prepared to delete stuff when you run out of space. Also, VR is regularly jumping ahead in technology that can be jammed into those headsets while at the same time dropping in price. While this headset is only a couple hundred dollars, saving a bit longer for one that will better suit your needs might be a wise investment.

Thanks for all your help. While I don’t think it’s realistic for me to get a $1,000 headset, I appreciate all the tips and support.
