I always thought that scene was more like the Hindu concept of the Astral Plane

or as you Christian folk would call it, "the stairway to Heaven" or "the tunnel of light"

Like a near-death experience, you walk through this hallway and see important scenes in your life playing out along the walls of the long corridor, then there's a flash of light when you reach the end and you're back, but you're not quite the same. The experience changes you on a spiritual level.

That's always how I viewed this scene, but enough of spiritual talk, let me actually contribute to the topic :3
