That is one of the enduring questions of MLP - what do cutie marks actually MEAN?

We know they give a magical power boost to a specific skillset, to the extent most unicorns can ONLY do magic related to their cutie mark; Starswirl believed they were a "mark of one's destiny" and Twi reinforced that when she fixed his spell.

Equally though, Luna, in consoling the CMC, said they were a reflection of who you are; that was much later in the series though, so I think the definition of what and how has changed a bit over time.

My own belief is that cutie marks are somewhere between destiny and aptitude; Troubleshoes didn't know he was "destined" to be a rodeo clown, but his cutie mark meant everything he did was likely to fail in amusing ways, making it easier for him to BE a rodeo clown, but not requiring him to do so. Zipperwhil's cutie mark is a set of paw prints, acquired when she got her puppy. She should have an enhanced natural ability with animals to reflect that, but still needed the CMC's help, and may not make a career out of it - but if she did, she would be naturally better at it than somepony whose cutie mark was a trombone.
