Why have Pegasi seemingly dropped in popularity?

I think it's because there aren't that many prominent or interesting pegasus characters in the show; unless I'm forgetting somebody the only ones I can think of are Fluttershy and Rainbowdash. Meanwhile there are plenty of interesting unicorn ponies like Starlight, Trixie, Sunburst, Starswirl, etc.

In season 9, I believe Rarity used her horn to shoot a magical beam and levitated pinkie in the air as if the was flying. In "2, 4, 6, Great", Snails uses self levitation. And in "Growing Up is Hard to Do", Sweetie Belle teleports into a hay bale. In "The Beginning of the End", many unicorns begin shooting beams at the mane six, and as early as season seven, Twilight Velvet is shown levitating multiple ponies in the air on the zeppelin. While comics don't really count because their cannon is shaky, there are scenes where Rarity uses strong magic like teleportation.

It seems like the writers of season nine either favorited unicorns by a large margin, or they forgot that only powerful unicorns were supposed to able to do these kinds of spells.

I've also noticed this and it might be another reason why unicorns are becoming more popular, stuff like teleportation or other advanced magic doesn't seem limited to powerful unicorns anymore

They're less popular now?

Screw that, us Pegasi rock! *wingfive*

When I designed myself to become a pegasus, that's because that's what I felt like inside. I may not be athletic, but not all pegasi are either. But I felt just that pegasus was the one for me to become.

Yes, same here! Though they are dropping in popularity, pegasi will always be number one to me! ^^

Yeah, this is most likely a factor of the popularity drop. The show seriously underutilized pegasi, while they gave unicorns all the screen-time and attention. I would've loved to see more pegasus characters introduced in the show.

I believe the introduction of new species was the cause of them losing popularity. I also noticed after the movie, everyone changed to unicorns really fast because of Tempest.
I've noticed a rise in non-pony species, but I do believe unicorns could now be considered one of the most popular pony species. I've definitely seen a lot of them.

I chose pegasus for myself (despite preferring unicorns) is because I feel like I just identify more with pegasi. We can't always get what we want, and that's actually a part of my character's background! As a kid she studied magic and wanted to grow up "to be a unicorn" despite that not ever being able to happen. :,)

For what it's worth, the first Season 10 comic story did just about exactly that with Zecora's backstory - she became intensely interested in magic despite lacking the anatomy to cast spells, and ultimately got into alchemy after learning of Mage Meadowbrook.

A pegasus alchemist sounds like a pretty cool idea - haven't seen one of those before.

That does sound cool. It reminds me of one of my characters who is a pegasus that studies, writes about, and sometimes uses magical amulets.
