Stardust 641 March 4, 2021 Share March 4, 2021 Amazon opened their first one of their cashierless stores in the UK. Honestly seems creepy to me with the camera tracking but I guess some people would find it useful and easy. Sainsburys has tried a code scan system b4 but it failed so people are waiting to see if this will be a success. I guess there have been these in US for sometime. DixonTheAdversary 1,632 March 5, 2021 Share March 5, 2021 There has to be at least a few people there, because where I live the self checkout lanes always screw up and there needs to be at least 1 employee there to fix it. Also, self checkout is only nice if you have a few items, which is why I find that the express lane is pretty much nonexistent nowadays.
Fluttershutter 2,497 March 5, 2021 Share March 5, 2021 I don't know exactly how it works but I always use self checkout when I can. I mostly want stores without those annoying greeters.
SparklingSquirrels 21,345 March 6, 2021 Share March 6, 2021 I’m against it. I don’t really want a camera watching what I buy, since I know I will just get tons of ads for those items on my Amazon account. Plus I work as a cashier on the side and I wouldn’t want to lose my job; it’s a fun excuse to be around people ֍֎֍֎
EpicEnergy 23,220 March 6, 2021 Share March 6, 2021 Cameras are recording you everywhere, at this point I've gotten used to it. That's why I most likely wouldn't have an issue with cashierless stores. *totally not up to any shenanigans*
Narcissus 355 March 9, 2021 Share March 9, 2021 I don't like it. It's just another way for big conglomerates to lay off more workers and pass none of the savings on to the customers. Customers do all the work and get nothing to show for it. The only beneficiaries are the fat cats in their fancy corporate offices, and they already have more money than they know what to do with. Envy 6,169 March 9, 2021 Share March 9, 2021 I do like it because of it being less interaction with people. When I go to the store I'm not there to socialize (trying to remember, as I haven't been inside a store in a year lol). Less people = better. However, I can do self-checkout at stores like Walmart, while there are still cashiers employed and cash registered opened for people who prepare that, and that's better. Everything needs more woodwind!
Fluttershyfan94 5,742 March 9, 2021 Share March 9, 2021 I'm all for it, with increasing wages it is the only way. It will lead to lower running costs as no employees and theft is insured anyway so you know only downside is jobs. However, the jobs change there is still security for said store and then there is upkeep for the store itself including restocking as well. You have to look at it from two or three perspective, you own a store and you have to pay an employee say a minimum wage of 15$ that means you have twelve hours of work leading up to a 180$ a day while that might not sound like a lot. You are competing with others stores, many especially the larger ones have a huge advantage over you as they are selling so many more units per hour. So you can't just raise the price of your product infinitely as that would hurt yours sales. So there is that fine balance of costs and profits, having a cashierless store doesn't really remove too much of that cost but it can be seen as a fixed cost and you always want to lower your fixed costs as much as possible. Cashierless store lowers that fixed cost by say 15$ an hour and when it comes to business it is small numbers like that which can sometimes determine whether you stay in business or not. Of course if you want to have a store that has cashiers then that eventually would be offered and you would go said stores paying more for your products. Reality is you won't, you'll go to the fully automated store and get a lower price even if it's just a few cents you will. Ultimately the reason we see more cashierless stores is that's what the market wants, that's what we want but regardless I'm all for it but still prefer stores with cashiers as such will rather go to one and that's that.
