Is Spike useless?

I've heard a lot of people call Spike useless. Is he, really? What has he done to be useful?

I'm not sure if he has honestly. I was never bothered about him so if he has, I wasn't paying attention.

He's just so boring and kinda just there. I forgot he existed. I guess his use is to be Twilight's 'sidekick'

If it hadn't been for Spike's ability sending letters from Twilight to Celestia she wouldn't be able to have the opportunity to send the letters back to help a Grey Twilight get her mojo back in the season 2 premiere

Whoever says that hasn't watched Friendship is Magic before, or is misinterpreting/ignoring every episode Spike is involved in. Or perhaps they have a flawed definition of what "useless" is. I'm not going to waste my time pointing out obvious incidents that prove that Spike is useful, especially when "Spike is useless" is most likely just a comment used by trolls to trigger Spike fans.
