Could Sunny's name have a deeper meaning?

I did a bit of thinking about the name of the protagonist for G5, Sunny Starscout, and think there might be a deeper meaning to her name.

Is it possible she's named "Sunny" because she's going to bring Equestria to a brighter future? Things aren't exactly sunshine and rainbows in Equestria from what little we've seen of G5. The pony races hate and fear each other to the point that a single unicorn appearing in Maretime Bay caused a town-wide freak-out. Sunny's goal has been stated to want to reunite the pony races.

I don't know, am I overthinking things?

You are overthinking this.

She has the name Sunny Starscout because her name is Sunny Starscout. She was giving that name because everyone (or at least most) working on G5 thought it was a good name. I sincerely doubt the person/people who decided on the name and sat in the back while we get more G5 information like: “They have no idea there is actually a deeper meaning to her name!” This fandom is ridiculous with how much digging they do when there is absolutely nothing at the bottom to see.

I think that’s a bit unfair.

Sure believing every single theory you come up with is “100% CANON AND NO ONE CAN CHANGE MY MIND” is silly. But theorizing tiny details is part of the fun.

I remember when we all got introduced to Star Spiders in Gen 4 and started wondering if they had a connection to Luna or Nightmare Moon.

No, they’re just an Everfree animal.

I believe that "Sunny" just refers to the fact that she's happy and likes to brighten up others' days. "Starscout" could be a reference to how the main character of FiM, Twilight Sparkle, loved stargazing, but I'm leaving my speculation at that.

It is a possibility, but I think that it is unlikely that Sunny's name foreshadows what she will do for Equestria. It is more likely that the correlation between her name and her goal/accomplishment is simply just a coincidence. In this particular instance, I think that it would be better to say that such a correlation is simply just a coincidence as there are no indicators or evidences that suggest otherwise.

However, disregarding what I just said, we could theorize that Sunny's name could also have the meaning that she is happy, joyful, and energetic, spreading the effects of those traits to other ponies like sunshine.

I feel her name is meant to telegraph to the target audience that she has a sunny disposition.

Disagree. Out of all five ponies so far, Sunny didn't display the strongest prejudice against any of the other tribes. In the beginning of the trailer, Sunny hoped for unicorns, Earth ponies, and pegasi to live in harmony again. Not only does Hasbro establish her arc about making the pony world a better place. She also has a very positive, hopeful attitude (and currently the most complete personality).

Her name (and coat) match her character. Castleton has a very valid, interesting theory. Now, is it true? Can't say. I don't know if the folks working on ANG stated if her personality was developed before or after they chose her name, either. Nevertheless, speculating is part of the fun, and the OP's theory should be considered till disproven.
