Gigachip 148 June 19, 2012 Share June 19, 2012 I wouldn't mind trying it. I already dip french fries into my ice cream. Those are salty, so I guess bacon would only taste a little different

Dark Qiviut 22,396 June 19, 2012 Share June 19, 2012 I love bacon, and I love sundaes, and this concept is dumb! There's no appeal to this other than trying to lure people in to eating. I even wrote a scathing comment towards this concept via the NYC Transit Forums once this became news: … What the hell is this? Lure customers?! Burger King's crap is sickening enough, but the concept here is beyond atrocious. There's a reason why the U.S. is in a nasty obesity epidemic, and it's because these places continually offer shitty "food" like this. Fatty, overly processed crap with no real value. While this ain't as ridiculous as KFC's double-down "sandwich," it's still hilariously BAD, in both nutritional value and overall stupidity to try and sell this garbage! Why-Gnome-Ear-Fifty 400 June 19, 2012 Share June 19, 2012 I would eat it, and I would like it for sure. I've had a bacon donut in the past and it was delicious. Here's why bacon sundaes would legitimately be good-tasting (although bad for your body, no doubt!) 1. Ice cream is good. Bacon is good. Ice cream Bacon is good. You might say they have conflicting tastes, but think about it this way. We (as in the American culture) eat a lot of things. Why do we put Ketchup on our hot dogs? Ketchup doesn't have quite the same taste as a hot dog, and sauerkraut is sour as opposed to the not-so-sour brats we put sauerkraut on. Similarly, why do we put lettuce on our hamburgers? Lettuce has little-to-no taste, if not slightly bitter, and comes with a cool kind of feeling that is completely different to a hamburger. It makes no sense to put these two together, huh? What people view as tastes these days, e.g. Sweet, Sour, Spicy, Salty, are very basic. As they say in Inception, "We need to go deeper." Which brings me to point 2... 2. There's a character in Chinese that would make my point here much clearer. There's a word for a different taste comparable to Sweet, Sour, etc. It's called xiang (first tense, for anyone who knows what I'm talking about.) It's incredibly hard to explain in English, but the closest word would probably be savory. Foods that are often described as xiang include butter, cooked meats, and cooked vegetables, especially in Chinese sauces that I don't even understand. Bacon is savory, without a doubt. Ice cream is savory to a certain degree. Let me explain. The ice cream in the sundae is vanilla-flavored. Have you ever smelled a bottle of vanilla flavoring? It's got a certain degree of savory that you don't experience much in ice cream. This, combined with the dairy in the "cream" part of "ice cream" gives that nice taste that you like to eat in vanilla ice cream. What BK is trying to pair is the savoryness of the ice cream and bacon, certainly not the fact that bacon is salty and ice cream is sweet. In fact, if you think about bacon and ice cream, neither of them are really extremely sweet or extremely salty. Actually, extremely sweet vanilla ice cream is kind of disgusting, as is extremely salty bacon. The two flavors that the foods have in common combine to give something even more savory than before, and that's what makes a bacon sundae viable in foods where people don't think about fat intake and calories. TL;DR: Bacon and Ice cream have a secondary flavor in common that essentially makes their combination delicious. Also, this is why people like to say that "Bacon tastes great with everything." It's cause of the savory factor and that so many foods, when cooked right, are very savory. There's my mini-essay defending Bacon Rights.
