Hello all, this is ADashOfRainbow here to bring you a thread all about one of his favorite music genres, ska. So what is ska? Pure awesomeness. The best I can describe it as is punk-rock with concert band instruments thrown into the mix, like trumpets, trombones, saxes, ETC. This genre was popular in the 90s, but still has quite the underground following nowadays. My favorite ska bands are Streetlight Manifesto, Less Than Jake, and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

And now for some tunes:

Discuss and post more ska!

I love Streetlight Manifesto, but I have a hard time getting into the other bands. Streetlight Manifesto sounds completely different to me. When I think of Ska, I think of Reggae, and SM downplays that upbeat focus in most of their songs (it's still there, of course). So what you have with SM is a punk (well, not going to argue what that term means) sound with jazz instrumentation (and influence) as well as Latin and Ska influences.

Since I love wind instruments, jazz influence, and like Latin influence as well, I love Streetlight Manifesto. When I first heard them I was a bit turned off because they were so different from what I had ever heard before, and I really wasn't one to listen to music that loud.

Also SM has awesome saxophone solos and a bari sax, which I have not heard in those other bands. Which makes them more awesome.

Enough of that, though... My favorite song by them is probably this:

Another one I've come to love is:

They're great with covering! (Although I hope the next album is original)

If Wikipedia does not decieve me, they are literally doing 99 covers, thus the album title 99 Songs of Revolution. Their most recent album was Volume 1, there are 8 more volumes to come with 11 covers on each for a grand total of 99. Hopefully they'll continue after that and make some more original music, though their covers are still awesome. Edited by ADashOfRainbow

I've heard otherwise and that the next album is going to be an original one. But maybe neither of our sources are reliable. lol So we'll just have to wait and see.

Anyway, how about some Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution? I believe they are Ska as well... They are closely related to Streetlight Manifesto.

(this one has quite a bit of language. I don't know if I needed to warn about that, but to be safe!)
