Mars Mission Roles:

Commander (CDR) - In command, controls spacecraft (highly technical).

Pilot (PLT) - Assists CDR, controls spacecraft (highly technical). Can also assist in EVA.

Extra Vehicular Activity Specialist (EVAS) - Performs "Extra Vehicular Activities" aka spacewalks, to repair damaged systems, etc. Is commander of said spacewalks. Also a flight engineer.

Medical Flight Surgeon (MFS) - mission medic. Can also assist in EVA.

Geologist (GEO) - To study Mars. Also taught some Flight Engineer skills. Can also assist in EVA.

Psychiatrist (PSY) - dedicated to the psychological health of crew during the mission.

 

Every crewmember is trained in three roles. To assist other crewmembers, and to take over a role if a crewmember is unable to perform their duty.

 

First up, the first one I made... It's not as good as the more Twilightlicious one, It's lower resolution and lower tech (she's not wearing a parachute! ), but awesome nonetheless. I mean, this pony can't NOT be awesome.

Primary Role: PLT

Secondary Role: CDR

Tertiary Role: EVAS

 

But she's now 20% cooler, and a lot more than 20% faster than the Wonderbolts. She'll be traveling 50 miles in 10 seconds flat in orbit! And don't even get me started on "perform for crowds of thousands", she'll be shining in front of the whole world! (though she may need to get over her anxiety first, lol). "They'll shower [you] with diamonds", RD!

Rainbow Dash may be brash and undisciplined, but she has a big choice coming up; either learn self control, or don't make it into the Wonderbolts or achieve any of her dreams. Like any performing team, the Wonderbolts require teamwork and discipline that RD must develop.

 

She has a taste of thrill and adventure to be sure, but her long focus on athleticism has left her intellectual side unexplored, and only tapped when she discovered "Daring Do". If you watch closely, you'll actually see she's pretty smart, and her ability to be so well immersed by a book, despite never having read much before, further shows her imaginative and intellectual ability.

 

Trained correctly; by competing with the Astropony Wonderbolts in their training; she has the potential to rise to her full potential as an astromare.

 

Also, despite her harsh manner, she is a surprisingly caring individual, and has even been given a minimal training in the "PSY" mission role.

Here's the more Twilightlicous one. Did this from midnight to about 4 am. And did a MUCH better job. Unintended awesome effect was that I scaled up the same background from RD's (they get their pictures in front of the same curtain, ya'know), and it's blurred, so now you can really see that Twili's standing in the foreground

CDR - 1: This tag means she's Commander! Twilight's a natural leader, and of the mane 6, she has by far the most "Right Stuff"

 

So, you understand the orange flight suit, but what's the deal with the harness?

It's Twilight Sparkle's own invention!

Terminal-Velocity Reducing Drag Device! TVR for short! Though the name "parachute" has caught on better.

The red triangle-thing is the pull cord. It has little legs to grip the hoof so you don't have to fit your hoof through it.

 

The little red bricks are flotation bricks. The parachute will slow you down to a breakneck, or rather, breakleg speed, so in case the astromare can't swim or has lost consciousness during the fall form extreme altitudes, the floats there ensure she'll roll over on her back or side so she doesn't float face-down in the water.

 

The pockets hold various survival gear, and the suit itself is an airtight pressure suit in case the spacecraft depressurizes. Of course, fully suited, she'd be wearing a helmet

 

I wonder what Rarity would think of these suits...

They're not orange for fashion - it's so they're easy to spot in emergencies.

 

She's all dressed up for gear test. Put it all on, see how it fits. Much better time to find out if something's wrong or could be improved than the morning of launch day.

 

Oh, I'll bet she's thrilled right now, it's all so awesome and exciting, though if her smile seems a bit fake, it might be because she's tired, overworked, and a bit embarrassed at publicly wearing a diaper. Oh, the public doesn't know, but's it's standard gear - you try sitting in a cramped space for up to 4-9 hours, nervous for launch, staying hydrated, then shoved under 9 G's right before staging!

But all things considered she still puts on a pretty nice smile. The power of optimism and a good attitude can never be overstated. Spaceflight is the greatest adventure ever. The greatest highs, and the most exhaustion and greatest lows. It's the "Right Stuff" to have optimism and a good attitude to carry you through.

Twilight is by far the most ideal astronaut of the group. What she lacks in athletic ability - only when compared to RD and the Wonderbolt Astroponies, because she actually has above-average athletic ability - she more than makes up for with intelligence. Her organized manner, unprecedented understanding, study skills, work ethic, focus, creativity, and intelligence all make her an exemplary commander for any mission out of their world.

 

Those same skills also make her more than capable of performing the role of PLT.

 

Twilight also, in her studies as Celestia's protege, has spent a great deal of time studying psychology, making her halfway trained already in the PSY role, and more than capable of performing it.

With training and diligence, Fluttershy can become capable. While timid, she has surprising intellectual ability and adaptiveness, and a medical skill that could prove invaluable in saving the lives of fellow crewmembers in the event of an emergency. Not to mention, her "freaky knowledge of sowing" has even proven to be useful to the engineering teams in designing clothing, parachutes, and other fabric materials for the mission.

 

Her supernatural empathy makes her an ideal PSY, to assist Pinkie Pie in that duty. Actually, us mission designers are convinced Pinkie Pie is utterly useless and Fluttershy is actually supposed to perform the PSY role, since the MFS role is only needed for emergencies. She is also capable of performing Pinkie's role of PSY should Pinkie become unable to perform her duties.

 

Her surprising intellect and adaptability make her ideal in the PLT role as well.

Believe it or not - Equestria is actually ready for the space age. They have simple computers (Twi's lab computer), advanced materials science (plastics), radios (seen in Fluttershy's cottage), and the materials science means they have the necessary chemistry knowledge.

 

Really, the key thing is the materials science. And the plastic soap bottles from "feeling pinkie keen" shows they have that.

 

Oh, and for allay'all not in the know, the suits are orange because they're not really spacesuits, they're "Flight Suits" - there's only a small difference:

Full spacesuits have protection from micrometeorites (specks of dust zipping around anywhere from slowly to 15x the speed of a rifle bullet), tinted visors, and some other features. The Flight suits are pressure suits in case the cabin depressurizes in an emergency. And they're the traditional gear for astronaut pictures.

We're trying not to kill heroes and cause a national incident

 

lol, but I am seriously considering a spin-off fic where Derpy tries to join the recovery flight team. They're not the astronauts, but they fly out and recover the space capsule and other parts that the rocket jettisons during ascent. Like small boosters. The Atlas rocket, which I'm closely basing an EASA rocket off of, actually jettisons some of it's engines to lighten the craft partway through the ascent. Give them a parachute, have an aerial team recover them before they hit the sea, and you can re-use them. That's what the flight team does.

 

But, more than anything else, they recover the capsule when it splashes down in the sea. Lol, imagine RD's horror if after she lands, she hears the hook from the recovery balloon (takes the place of the helicopters) slam the side of the capsule, and then Derpy's voice:

 

 

 

 

Hmm. I used to have a plot idea for that spinoff where Derpy joins the flight team, but I have no idea what it was, so I'd have to find it again. It's around here somewhere...

 

I was actually partway through making a picture of my own ponysona in a flight team suit, but I kinda dropped that project

(Btw, the flotation bouys on the vest, and the drag chutes were originally ideas from the Flight Team, not astronaut equipment. Then I decided the astronauts oughta have them, too.)

 

But anyways, I'll suit up Derpy just for fun some time after I finish the mane 6. They get my focus for now

I'll even do Gilda. That'll be interesting since she's not a pony.

And speaking of non-ponies, what about Spike? Lol, that'd be pretty much a human form, I guess, plus a tail.

 

Btw, Fluttershy is about 40% done. I should be able to finish this one tonight, if not tomorrow in the day.

Ok I really fell in love with this idea when I saw it. It sounds like an interesting and creative idea. To get on topic; the art looks great, looks like it could be straight from the show and has enough shading that it really makes it look like show quality material. Overall a great job. I could learn a thing or two from you.

Wow, thanks! I gotta say, though, all I do is the background and vector on the suits. I usually get the pony vectors from somewhere freely available, though I usually touch them up a bit ^^;

So you're saying that you do everything other than the vector? See? You are awesome. The background is the best part in fact. The suits are great. Also, everyone uses vectors. Vector artists are the suppliers, an artist takes these supplies and makes it into great art. You are a great example; you took a vector and turned it into a masterpiece. Did you go to BronyCon? Because I could see this as art that people would buy. (Keep in mind on typing this on my phone, so please excuse grammar mistakes.)

But oh my gosh! That's an exciting prospect!

I could even make money off of it, eh?

 

Far more exciting than making money is the prospect of at least partially paying for the trip out, doing something awesome like that, and giving my parents a good, vaild reason to fly hundreds of miles away for a few days XD lol.

(Which probably won't be such a big deal later anyways, since I leave for college this fall.)
