Any tips for giving dimension to hats?

So...I'm getting pretty good at drawing ponies in the style of this show, and I really want to start paving my way into the pony art world. However, I've been recently struggling with one particular accessory.

My OC wears a Top Hat, and...for the life of me...I cannot draw this sucker. I have tried and tried and it always turns out looking...like a flat, misshapen ink blot.

I'd be really apriciative if someone could post some pictures of hats in MLP, or direct me to some fan art with them included. Or even spots within the show with Top Hats included. I need to study up!

if you drew the avatar that you're currently using, then you're doing fine.

otherwise, here's somthing to have a look at. rounded edges will help greatly.

I don't have any fancy confangled pictures to contribute, but I find it good to have a hat with me when I'm drawing something with a hat. I put it on things and position it so that I can get a basic idea of the flow of the perspective. Remember to keep the brim of the hat and the top of the hat constant with the perspective you are drawing whatever you are drawing from.
