Applejack - Theoretical Component of Lack of Popularity

Recommended Posts

I like Applejack. I at least like all of the ponies in the show to one degree or another.

It seems that on average Applejack is the least liked/fanboy'd of the Mane 6. There are multiple factors to this, but I am only bringing one up here.

Singing

Applejack has participated in multiple songs in the show, yet I cannot recall a SINGLE time when Applejack had a solo song, or even a duet. Obviously her personality does not dictate singing to, well, sing.

It would be fair to correlate how much a pony sings to their fan popularity. Of course there are exceptions, and this is not a solid "rule." (I.E. Princess Luna. Man, an episode where Luna sings though would melt many a brony's heart  )

Pinkie Pie, who has I believe the highest tally of songs, is a very big fan favorite. Twilight Sparkle is probably second in tally.

In conclusion, I think that if there was an episode with Applejack having a solo, there mayyyyyyy be a spike in her popularity. I don't know, but there is only one way to find out...

There would probably be a spike in it, because most people don't like her simply because she "doesn't have a personality, and is a very dry character".  (I for one am a big fan of hers)  Anyways, a song would give her more of a personality, and people would start seeing why AJ is so awesome.

Speaking of a Spike in her Popularity: There's going to be an episode called Spike at your Service. Hope it turns out good.

The only reason I don't like Applejack is because of how much of an uninteresting character she is. I will agree that she is quite adorable and I do kinda like her accent, but she's just not that interesting.

All the other ponies of the main 6 are very unique. Rainbow Dash, who is very self-aware and claims she's awesome, Pinkie, who is a nutjob spastic and physics-breaking pony, Twilight, who's one of those adorable kinda geek girls, Fluttershy who's way too shy, and Rarity who's overly obsessed with shiny objects.

Then there's Applejack who's... like... way too normal.

So that's my theory. I do agree with you, though. I think that if she had her own song she'd boost in popularity.

It's ironic how I fall just to get back up again...

Ah, another Applejack popularity thread. Will this one live up to the sterling quality of the past five? One can only hope.

I don't know if there's any correlation really. Going by the popularity poll, Rainbow and Fluttershy are the most popular of the six, yet they have sung much less than Twi and Pinkie. Fluttershy has one solo and half of Find a Pet and Dash just has the other half. Rarity seems to be the least popular (though she is still well loved, at least by me) and she's had two songs for herself.

So not seeing much of a pattern here, although I do want a song from Applejack.

Though a song wouldn't hurt her popularity, here is my reasoning behind her popularity or lack thereof. The way she is presented is of her being too normal, no quirks or defining characteristics that stand out against those of the group. She maybe a workaholic, but that seems dull in comparison.

The problem with Applejack is that her themed episodes heavily rely on her family and their farm. In fact most of her scenes in the show is just about family and apples. It more about the farm and family than it is about her. While it is nice that she is a strong family role model...it also makes AJ lack individuality.

Now if we got a "Green isn't your Color" type of episode where Applejack is forced OUTSIDE her role as valuable family member and apple farmer (with a solo song!)...AJ would a lot of more engaging!

Wow, I've been here like three weeks and I'm already frustrated with the AJ popularity threads.

Anyway, I don't quite see it. RD is super popular and as far as I can recall, she only has one song, shared with Fluttershy.

Pinkie Pie sings a lot, but isn't as popular as RD or Fluttershy from what I can recall, at least on these forums.

Rarity has had some solo singing parts, but she is the least popular on this forum.

Edit: Sorry, it looks like DashForever said everything I did, but better! Shoulda read it first!

DashForever and Rooish just about covered it. So that wraps up another episode of "Hate on AJ", feel free to check out the sister threads going on next door.

All sarcasm aside, I don't really think her getting her own songs would help her popularity. A song doesn't change the characters personality.

I'm sure I am not alone in this, but I think her personality is just fine. She isn't just focused on apples and the farm like has been said, more so her focus is on always lending a helping hoof and being there for others. She may not feel the need to declare herself awesome or that she needs to have the full attention of at least one of her friends to feel like she is loved, but she is much more mature and experienced in life than the rest. And those who can see beyond her southern farm girl shell see more there than just the dominating aspect of the others personalities that the writers so blatantly put out there.

I think it's a shame that AJ hasn't had a song yet, but I certainly don't think the producers have chosen not to give her a song based off of her popularity.  I just think that the opportunity for a solo hasn't presented itself, and hey, I think they're trying to work her into more songs; I mean, she did sing in two of the three songs in the season premiere, so that's a start.

As for her popularity in general, I do think that this season it is starting to pick up, from what I've seen in the fandom recently.  The show has certainly been giving her the spotlight, or at least a lot of screen time, lately (i.e. she was the only one of the Mane 6, aside from Pinkie's 30 second cameo, to even speak in "Bad Seed"), and I think many bronies are starting to realize that in a lot of ways, particularly concerning mature, practical decision-making, Applejack's kinda the rock of the group (arguably along with Rarity, but that's a different issue entirely) in that regard, even if she doesn't have nearly as eccentric of a personality as some of the other Mane 6 do.  I'm perfectly happy with how she's always been portrayed up until this point, and I think Studio B is too; I mean, think of it this way, so many ponies say, "Well, she doesn't have a really notable personality like the rest," but if they made her more eccentric in her behavior, then she would be more like the rest, meaning she'd technically be less unique than she is, and in turn, the rest of the Mane 6 would be less unique than they are.

Also, gotta agree with DashForever on this one, this is how many AJ popularity threads now?  Sweet applesauce there's a lot of those on these forums!!!

Hopefully the Apple Family Reunion will give Applejack some indivduality and maybe even a song for once. Personally I didn't see beyond Applejack's beyond her somewhat dull personality until i realaized that she really is a great character because of her maturity.

The closest she's had to a solo was seeds of the past but starlight glimmer had a solo part so it doesn't count as a solo and it's super annoying because all of the mane 6 have had a solo and even starlight glimmer has had a solo,Idk why people don't like her she's my favourite character

I never thought that was why she was unpopular.  I thought it was because of her lack of an ongoing character arc.

Right. Also her episodes can also involve her family who each have distinct personalities. Imagine if half of Pinkie Pie's episodes had the CMC in them. It's just the nature of her character setup.
