Zygen 6,066 December 20, 2012 Share December 20, 2012 HEY EVERYPONY! Whatsup!? I was bored after school today since I got out early so I decided to draw Pinkie Pie!(My first time drawing her.) Wait for it.... HERE IT IS! And I also used this for reference!(Note I flipped it around in GIMP, because drawing it facing the way it is in the reference was a bit awkward for me.) I used GIMP and my good ol, keyboard and mouse. This is certainly the longest its taken me to draw a pony in a while(Took like 2 hours I think, maybe a little less maybe a little more.) I was very picky on details this time around, I also tried making the eyelashes a bit bigger(which is somewhat harder then it seems since my brush isn't very suitable for the size and shape of them.) I think it looks better personally then the small pixel wide ones. I also made the circles around the eyes bigger, along with actually trying to make the cutie mark look correct(I failed horribly on most of my other cutie mark drawings.) I also spent lots of time re drawing things, some of the stuff though it was kinda impossible to go back without having to redraw like everything, so theres some stuff I couldn't fix. Still I spent a good bit of time fixing little things here and there. And also... I think Pinkie has the most random, and challenging to draw hair I've had to draw so far. The only one of the mane 6 I can see that might be more challenging is going to be Rarity.(Although i think pinkies initial outline is harder. While Rarity's looks like it has alot more details.) Anyways, I had fun listening to Pinkie Pie songs, while drawing this, i thought about trying a bit more complex of a pose, but I decided against it for now and decided to work more on perfecting other things like the anatomy and proportions of the whole thing. Anyways, I enjoyed drawing this( was much better then sitting in class, even if I didn't have school today.) And I hope you enjoy looking at it(If you can look at it long enough without your eyes bleeding .) Tell me what you think! I'm open to all critique! It just improves me! Later! Keep PARTYING! 3 Thanks to Gone Airbourne for the awesome sig! My Oc's, Ponysona, Bella Vocal Covers Blog, MLP Covers Thread
EpicApplejack 73 December 20, 2012 Share December 20, 2012 Honestly, for going freehand, I think you did pretty darn good. I mean I can't do that with a mouse. However, I would recommend perhaps using line tools if you wanted it to look better. 1 Winter Chills ~ http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/winter-chills-r2559 Glitch Freeze ~ http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/glitch-freeze-r4594 Sensiquill ~ http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/sensiquill-r4614

Thanks I'm looking around in GIMP, but I can't say I've found any line tools, I've just been using a pencil tool with the default circle brush. If you have any knowledge of GIMP or something and know where the line tool would be(Which I could just be blind and missing it) Then i'd love to know . Thanks for the critique also! Looks good! The legs are VERY small and she seems to have gained quite a bit of weight. I would recommend using line tools, but that's just me. Yeah she does look a bit short, and a little bit chubby. I can't really find a straight up line tool in gimp though, I've just been using the pencil tool since it looks the best most of the time, i'm not even sure where the line tool is. If there is one i'm either blind or stupid or something . Anyways, thanks for the critique dusty! Thanks to Gone Airbourne for the awesome sig! Drahgoon 152 December 21, 2012 Share December 21, 2012 Looks very good! How many layers do you use? It's a lot easier to work with individual pieces if it's in several layers. For example you could have a layer for mane outline, one for mane color, one for body outline, one for body color, etc. When I draw ponies I end up with 20-30 layers depending on if I use a background or not. Keep up the good work! Really see you improving a lot from your first drawing. 1 My (old) Art thread: http://mlpforums.com/topic/41087-drahgoons-journey-through-art-updated-122212/My Line Art Request Thread: http://mlpforums.com/topic/44182-pony-lineart-requests-open/ (Closed)

I have layers for the body head hoofs mane and tail outlines, and layers for the coloring of the body and mane, and then the eye outline, coloring, pupils, and I normally add a layer for the color differences and stuff in the mane. I think thats basically all the layers I use.. Oh and one for the cutie mark. I might start making backgrounds, of course I'm going to have to work on actually drawing backgrounds first. But yeah for now that sounds like all the layers I use normally. Thanks to Gone Airbourne for the awesome sig! Fluttermena 1,223 December 21, 2012 Share December 21, 2012 Dude, why are the legs and the eye always too small in all of your drawings? You seem to have a real problem with those... Other than that, I can't really criticise anything else. I'm amazed that you can draw this well with a mouse, I could never do something like this. And I absolutely love that mane.

I like drawing in things like GIMP, mostly because its just much more convenient for me, and its alot easier to share it on these forums then drawing it.(Not to mention its easier to tab out of a program then put away paper and pencil that your drawing when someone walks in.) Most of the reason I draw on the computer is because of convenience, and I draw with a mouse because well, its all I have . Atleast I've made some progress in learning to draw. EpicApplejack 73 December 21, 2012 Share December 21, 2012 Sorry, but I've never used gimp. I stick to photoshop! Anyways, it may very well be that gimp lacks a line tool, lol. You should give it a go, you might like it. 1 Winter Chills ~ http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/winter-chills-r2559 Glitch Freeze ~ http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/glitch-freeze-r4594 Sensiquill ~ http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/sensiquill-r4614

Another program you should try is Inkscape. Vectoring is a great way to get clean, smooth lines and fluid curves using just a mouse. Plus the vector method of drawing is just plain fun! I don't know if the show's animators use Inscape or vectoring to draw, but in the fan community vectoring and drawing ponies seems to go together like peanut butter and jelly. Pinkie sure does look smaller tho did she deage to 10 years? Hm... Yeah she does look a bit odd I guess, I'm not sure if I'd say she looks like a stallion.(Especially with the eyelashes.) However her legs are alot smaller then they should be, I really didn't notice how small they where until I finished. Oh well I guess you live you learn . Another program you should try is Inkscape. I assume this is free? However forgive me for my ignorance, but what exactly is the difference between vectoring and drawing? I guess I may consider it, but I feel pretty at home using gimp, and it really only feels more comfortable the more I use it, so idk how much difference it'll make. Thanks for the suggestion though. Thanks crystal , I would be quite surprised if I wasn't impressed atleast a little, I mean my first drawing of a pony was like.. O-o.. It was hardly recognizable lol. Its been an enjoyable thing to do on the side when I'm bored! Thanks for the compliments! Drahgoon 152 December 21, 2012 Share December 21, 2012 Vectors are essentially lines that don't get pixelated when you make the picture bigger or smaller. It's also a lot easier to get straight and curved lines with a vector/line tool. In my opinion I like free-hand drawing more because each person develops a style, but if you're going for show-accurate you'll want to use vectors. 1 My (old) Art thread: http://mlpforums.com/topic/41087-drahgoons-journey-through-art-updated-122212/My Line Art Request Thread: http://mlpforums.com/topic/44182-pony-lineart-requests-open/ (Closed)

I'm probably going to stick with drawing freehand, Just because i'm more comfortable with it, and I don't know if I really want to draw 100% the same as the show. Maybe I'll try it for the experience of it though. Thanks for the insight! Thanks to Gone Airbourne for the awesome sig! kirbyboi 588 December 22, 2012 Share December 22, 2012 Wow, very good~! The legs however need to be a bit wider and more tall. Also, try making her nose less pointy and have Pinkie lose the buff of her chest....but this was made freehand? It's really good! Just make those few corrections and I'm sure this will turn out great! Don't stop drawing, though....I'm sure you'll get the hang of it!

Yeah, I'm gonna have to work on making that nose rounder, I've made some progress actually with practice pretty easily with making the hoofs wider and taller, pretty much just needed to fix the proportions in my head. And the buff is proably just from me exagerating the curves on the chest, I'll try to tone it down. And if by freehand you consider drawn with a mouse on a computer freehand then I guess yes . I don't plan to stop drawing for anytime soon! Thanks for the critique and compliments! For freehand this is really good. However the legs are abit small and the eyes are too small aswell but like I said this is very good for freehand standards! Yeah, proportions on those should be a pretty simple fix, just gotta buff it up a bit. And thank you! Thanks to Gone Airbourne for the awesome sig!
