Do ponies have fur?

The ponies aren't drawn with anything hinting that they have fur. And that isn't unique to G4 where fur spikes are rare in general. Like is the scene from the start of MLP'nF episode Bright Lights_-_Parts 1

 

In the MLP:FiM episode Dragon Quest  Spike says, "You won't be laughing when you spill blueberries all over your scales…uh, feathers"

 

And Discord has the same transition between his  "head of a pony and a body of all sorts of other things." that Gilda has.  So the idea that  ponies are feathered has some credence....

Well im not sure but lets try take into account Real Horses dont have fur the only thing that would count as fur is on the mane and tail the closest thing to fur would be feathers casue they serve the same purpose as fur but this is just what i think.

I don't think it would count as fur even on the mane. It's just hair from the looks of it. In fact, looking back on Mystery On The Friendship Express, doesn't Pinkie Pie say "...and Donut Joe has éclair in his hair"?

I'm pretty sure poniesDO have fur. If not, then Twilight just has purple skin? Just because they don't draw fur marks doesn't mean they don't have fur, however they probably don't have very much.

Real life horses have very short and very fine fur on their bodies, and longer hair for their manes, tails, and eyelashes. Since Big Macintosh and other male draft ponies have feathering on their ankles, we can assume that ponies in the MLP universe have fur. They're just not obvious due to the show's stylized art style.

I'm pretty sure they have fur coats like any other equine. Twilight even said "That must be why their coats aren't crystaly" When she was referring to the Crystal ponies in the season 3 premiere

Come to think of it, Twilight escapes Rarity's boutique in the first episode "before she dyes my coat a new colour". So I think we can say that they have fur coats, but hair manes and tails. (Boast Busters - "What did she do to my hair?")

You can see a little bit of fur come up from Rarity's face. They always had hair, we just never noticed it.

Well he was talking to Rainbow Dash then, and I believe he was referring to the feathers of her wings.  As for ponies themselves?  Pretty darn sure they have fur.  It wouldn't make much sense if it were skin, it would be clear if it were feathers (i.e., the animators would draw the outlines of feathers), and, well, being mammals (which kinda goes without saying, but was definitely established when the Cakes had Pumpkin and Pound Cake) it logically makes sense that they'd have fur just like their real-world counterparts.  I mean, they have manes, so, ergo, they should have fur coats as well.

How on earth would they NOT have fur? They don't all have different pastel-colored skin, that's just ridiculous.

Ponies are basically (okay not but let's just say this) small horses. Horses are covered in shorter (coat) and longer (mane and tail) fur/hair. So cartoon ponies, even if they're just two-dimensional, are obviously covered in fur. Use some logic...

If they wanted to be completely technically accurate, they could have a character brushing their body, leg or neck with a brush. But because of the scale angle of how characters are shot in the show, and in context to their actions, unless you were informed to the effect as we are in this thread, people (including bronies) would think that the characters were just rubbing slabs of wood against their "skin" for no reason.

I like to think that the ponies have very short fur, almost like felt. So maybe that's why we don't see any fur spikes etc. But yeah, only pegasi have feathers, which I do believe Spike was talking to Rainbow Dash when he said that line.

Plus, imagine petting a pony with no fur, only skin..

I think the fur would look and feel just like that on real horses, just finer and shorter. And pastel coloured of course. The mane of Luna and Celestia is a bit more complex. I think it is some sort of energy or something arranged to look like a mane.

Horses do have "fur", but it's more commonly called a "Coat". After riding, people will often brush their horses down with what are called dandy brushes or or curry brushes and combs. (Curry combs are more for cleaning the other brushes though, not actual grooming) It helps improve the horse's appearance and overall hygiene and health.

I believe they do but most have very fine and thin sort of 'fur'.  There has been some that came with more though! It really depends on the horse, I think.  Some may have more of it and have it more apparent than others, but all horses have some, to some extent (Or most?).  Although it's referred to more as a "coat" rather than "fur". ^^
