Step 2: Put some shampoo and conditioner in its hair and wash it out.

This is good. Though if you want to curl your pony's mane and tail, then I would suggest wrapping it around some sort of bodypart near the mane (Neck, Legs, body) and let it dry. If you want straight hair, then you can use a flat iron on VERY LOW HEAT.

Shame I thought we were going to share real life hair styling tips while getting our nails done and gossiping about the latest dirt...

*sigh*

I'll do this if I ever get a brushable pony, but I personally like the pure mold ponies better :3

This. Mold Ponies tend to look better.

The brushables look silly since they're plastic and bald with awkward hair coming out of the top!

But hey some people are into the whole brushable thing so hope this helps people!

I actually haven't even bought one pony figurine yet :( I have more important things to spend money on at the moment...

...though I'd kill for a plushie!

I would have to respectfully disagree with one of your tips. While you're right about soaking it in water, I see no good reason to use shampoo or conditioner unless it's dirty or extremely tangled. Even then I wouldn't use conditioner because it's meant to add moisture back into the hair that is removed when you shampoo but, as plastic hair doesn't absorb moisture, I see no reason to use it. Here's how I've been doing it. Also note that this first part is just a general guide to straighten/detangle the hair. If you want to style it to be show accurate you will have to do each pony's hair a little differently.

1. Soak the hair in warm water.

2. Gently straighten it and brush out the tangles. (I use a regular hair comb, not the one that comes with the pony)

3. Style it however you wish.

4. Soak it again in boiling water to set the style. (boil perm)

5. Let it air dry for several hours or overnight.

Additional tips: (these are my own that I came up with so there may be better ways)

For Pinkie Pie/Rarity: If you want curls, you can use drinking straws and bobby pins to hold them in place. For Rarity, you will want to gently remove the straws while leaving the curls in place. For Pinkie, you may want to gently play with the curls to get them to look "poofy".

For Rainbow Dash/Twilight: You may want to thatch their bangs and secure them to the head with an elastic hair band. (not rubber bands because they can leave a stain) You can curl the back part of the mane around the front of the body and secure it as well. If you're feeling brave you can try cutting their hair but be VERY careful. It's easy to cut too much. My rule of thumb: If you think it's just right, cut it a little longer.

For Fluttershy: You can wrap her hair around her front legs and secure it with elastic bands or tape.

For Applejack: She's easy! Lay her bangs down and secure with an elastic band. Twist her mane a little (to add volume) and put it in a ponytail. Do the same with her tail.

Also, I've read that if you want to make an 80's Cheerilee you can braid her hair and then unbraid it to make it wavy.

So I've recently bought a lot of the ponies with the hair that can be combed. I've never played with the hair before until my friend showed me how to do a hair braid. Now I'm totally giving all my ponies braids and pony tails.

So does anyone else work on the ponies hair? Do you guys try to make them show accurate?

Man, with my first toy I was so sickened that Rainbow Dash's hair didn't look like the show so I cut off the top a little bit and used some of my hair gel to make it kind of pointy like it was in the show.

Styling their hair is soo much fun.

I've been tempted to cut their hair. I'm just worried that I'm going to mess it completely up. Does hair gel work though? Like the manes aren't real hair so I thought it wouldn't stick

Hair gel will just make their hair all clumpy. I don't recommend it.

In order to make their hair softer, wet their hair and put some conditioner in it and leave it sitting for about 30 minutes. Then rinse the conditioner and let the mane air dry.

If you want to style the hair, you don't need any other hair products. If you cut the hair, always leave more than you think that you need. Anytime you style hair, get it wet. If you want to curl it, use straws cut into smaller sections and bobby pins. You can find tutorials online. :)

I haven't styled my mane 6's pony hair, but this is on my to-do list. But since it will take awhile, I haven't gotten to it yet. :< Cuz I plan to re-root the hair to get it to be spot on show accurate.  I had some smaller size ponies that I fixed, but then I decided to upgrade them all to fashion size.

hot water goes a long way when it comes to styling. :) There are some amazing tuts out there. I put some tight spiral curls into the pony that comes with Rarity's carousel, and I had a hard time getting those curls out after I set it with hot water. (I decided to sell her, so I figured I'd straighten her hair).

theres some good tutorials online on how to make the hair look more show accurate. i feel no shame in saying that ill be fixing the hair whenever i buy toys with loose hair.

fluttershy, for example. the end result looks perfect, and taking on the challenge is tempting.

I don't have much advice for styling pony hair, but I have styled some doll hair before and one of the biggest things you need to keep in mind is NEVER EVER EVER use high heat! EVER. The hair that comes with the ponies would melt like ice when it comes even close to a curling iron, and you would have a horrible mess and a toy that you would have to re-hair. Some heat does work nicely, but never more than gently boiling water.

This would be good for both Rarity and for Fluttershy - just the very ends of Fluttershy's hair, though, to give it that little 'flip' at the end. If you google 'styling doll hair' you might get some good tips, though be careful because not all toy hair is made equally!

I have posted on this topic before, let me see if I can find it....AH.

Flat/Curling Iron: Set the iron on its lowest heat setting and start at the root of the hair, moving slowly to the tips. Make sure to keep the iron moving! Do not allow it to sit in one place for more than a second or two, or you may accidentally burn the hair! Repeat this process until the hair is dry. Shouldn't take more than 3-8 passes. You end up with a straight haired look. Think Fluttershy's hair

Straw curls: You'll need drinking straws, rubber bands but PREFERABLY the OUCHLESS clear hair ties that look like rubber bands (but they don't catch in hair like regular plain rubber bands.) These can be found in the hair accessory aisle at stores like Target or WalMart, and are made by Goody :3, and a paper towel, cut or torn into one inch wide strips. Separate the hair into sections and wrap each section one at a time around a straw starting at the ends and wrapping towards the head, keeping the hair as flat as possible. When you finish, take a paper towel strip and wrap it around the hair, fastening it with the rubber band. Leave to dry overnight, and by morning, you will have fabulous curls just like Pinkie Pies.

Tip: NEVER use glue or hair gel to style brushable pony's hair. Since the hair is made of nylon, using stuff like this on the hair causes serious long term damage to it. It may make the pony look 20% cooler and show accurate for a little while, but in the end it completely ruins the pony's lovely locks. Just do your best to style the hair into your desired style using the above styling methods which if done *properly* cause no damage and will actually maintain their hair smile.png

Also, unless you have experience with cutting hair, either human, wig or honestly bait pony hair, don't bother cutting their hair. You'll end up doing more damage than actual styling and will probably be unhappy with the end result. Usually you can't cut the hair to look more show accurate anyway. It just...ends up bad. So says almost ALL the internet images I've seen. *nodnod* Good luck! ;)

Yea, I'm looking for some good ways to style a brushables hair....to show accuracy...because as they come and the used ones I've found at thrift stores, the hair tends to be knotted and in a huge mess......anyone got any favorite tutorials or anything? Mainly for Fluttershy, Dashie and Pinkie Pie...as those are the only brushables I have... My one Fluttershy looks like how she did at The Grand Galloping Gala.

Fluttershy's lover, she's my waifu. I'm in love and obsessed with her, she's given me shyabetes. *Hnnnng*

Well, I do actually have some tutorials for those guys I used a while back... Hold on. *Dives in box, then pops out* Ah! Here we are!

Here's Dashie's:

Here's Flutter's:

Here's Pinkie's:

Though they look kinda long, most are fairly simple and should make them look as show accurate as possible! She has the rest on there as well if you ever get more, too! Well... Hope I helped!

The first thing that you want to do is make their hair smooth and brushable.

To do that, all you need is warm water, conditioner, and a comb (either the comb that they come with or a regular comb).

First, get the pony's hair wet under warm water.

Then, rub some conditioner in the pony's hair. Leave the conditioner in for at least a half hour.

After the conditioner has sit for a while, rinse the conditioner out of the pony's hair. Comb it and pat it dry. If the hair is still knotty, DO NOT PULL IT OUT WITH THE COMB. Repeat the conditioning until you get the hair the way you want it.

Styling protip: hair needs to be wet. :)

yea, I seen videos and most got their hair wet. I'll try these out when I feel like giving Fluttershy,  Dashie and Pinkie a bath.

I'll post before and after pics as well.

Thats what I do all the times! But its my preparation for the hairstyle. After I rinse of the shampoo and conditioner I start styling the pony´s mane. For curls, I use a pencil, roll it over a strand of hair and press for 5 seconds then take off carefully and Ive got some gorgeous curls! And then put some gel to hold it in place.
