Jack Durango 119 January 24, 2013 Share January 24, 2013 Latin makes everything you say sound like you're chanting some ancient demon curse! Latin is indeed superb. I find it chillingly pleasurable to hear beautiful choral songs, many with religious overtones, being sung. This language spawned so many root words and helped along a few other notable languages. Also, it may be just me, but I think Latin would not be too complicated for me to learn. I can probably memorize Latin words and phrases, then eventually learn to read and write in Latin with relative ease, considering many of the words I know in English have Latin root words in them. khaine21x3 789 January 24, 2013 Share January 24, 2013 I love learning languages but latin isn't on my list since not many people speak it and the only famous book that was originally written in latin was probably the bible.

Latin is spoken by a lot of people, including Catholic church members, students, professors, scholars, and more, it's just that it's considered a dead language since it's not the official language of any country. Pfft, Latin is so mainstream. I'll see your Latin and raise you Gaulish. *raises hipster glasses* Gaulish is best extinct language. I'll see you Gaulish and raise you German and Latin in the same song. Truly epic, E Nomine is my favorite music group of all time. http://www.youtube.com/watch/?v=JRjvTnRicyk
Cocodrillo 1,566 January 24, 2013 Share January 24, 2013 (edited) It's cool. Absolutely cool, as long as you don't have to study it. Then, it sux hard. Worst lessons ever. There's no subject I dislike but in those times, it was latin. Just no. I can speak some German. German is also a pretty cool language, especially to sing in. If you like both German and Latin listen to E Nomine, it combines the two. >German >Pretty cool >Singing wat. Rammstein is the only exception... I'm not fluent in Latin There's no way to be fluent in that, because, you know, it's a dead language so it lacks so many words that there is no way to speak in it. You can learn the grammar, learn the vocabulary, but you can't talk about something (unless you want to tell your children a story about wolfs scaring girls in a forest...) Remember, there are no U's This information would be useful if we were carving the words into the stone, because THAT'S the reason why they replaced u with v. It's just easier. Midnight Seeker 302 January 24, 2013 Share January 24, 2013 As a Highlander, I feel it is my duty to give a wee mention to my own native languge, Gaelic. Unlike Latin, there was a pogom to elminate it (which it survived). I have some issues with certain Gaelic speakers (I only know a little bit), but have a wee video to see why it endures so well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDdi6bn06bo Avatar of OC by the lovely Skullgal56
CloudsdaleCompanion 342 January 24, 2013 Share January 24, 2013 (edited) I chose to learn Latin at school and actually got my Latinum last year, but it was one hell of a ride. I'm glad I didn't choose to continue it in my A levels, it might sound like a cool language at first, but trust me, you won't want to torture yourself by learning it. At least that's my attitude towards it. I have to admit though that Latin is quite a logical and fairly simple language to learn. Probably the fact that you don't speak it makes it somewhat more difficult. Nun steh ich hier ich armer Tor und bin so klug als wie zuvor. Seriously, I hardly know anything anymore. I don't really care though. There are professors who can speak fluent Latin, it must be crazy. I take like 5 hours just to translate one sentence. Now German is an interesting language. If you are considering to take a closer look at it, you better be good at languages in overall, because it is one of the most difficult ones to learn. Or at least so I heard. I dunno, I can't judge, I already speak German. Which is why I can tell you: German singing can be OK. There are actually some nice songs. Just to list a few: Frida Gold - Wovon sollen wir Träumen Die Toten Hosen - Tage wie diese Silbermond - Irgendwas Bleibt Feel free to check them out. Strawberry Tart 161 January 24, 2013 Share January 24, 2013 Latin makes everything sound cool. I mean seriously, listen to this nursery rhyme become awesome. "The wheels on the bus go round and round" In Latin it is: rotarum super bus ire circum et circum That's just awesome. Or how about this London Bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down Pontis Londoniarum cecidit, cecidit, cecidit No one can argue that Latin isn't cool. Latin is best language. I like Latin songs a lot. I mean, have you heard Lamentations of Jeremiah? Best. Thing. Ever. My choir is singing it (sadly, although the entire choir is learning it, only the people going on the field trip to New York get to sing it on-stage. Sadness.) I'm the highest part (Soprano 1). Enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nejycRrDHGI si, si, latino es bueno y todo, pero yo hablo el verdadero mejor lenguage.... el lenguage de los tacos y los sombreros (I can't spell :3) La idioma de los tacos, senor/senorita. :3 Quiso aprender Latin, pero mi escuela no lo ofrecia. No es muy problema.... And it's fine, I think you spelled everything right. 1 Credit to MatrixChicken for Signature Credit to Генерал Четник for Avatar
-D1SCORDANT- 1,080 January 25, 2013 Share January 25, 2013 Sorry, but Klingon is a superior dialect. Joking aside, Latin is one of the few other languages I've considered learning, along with Spanish, German, and Japanese. And Latin singing is awesome, not so much in the kind of music I usually listen to, though. My YouTube Channel My Deviantart

Pony Joe 583 January 25, 2013 Share January 25, 2013 I'm taking French as my required foreign language in school, and whenever I say something to someone in French their first reaction is "That sounds so cool!" Unfortunately, I really don't care for the language's odd quirks, such as (almost) never pronouncing the last two or three letters in any given word. That's really all there is to say on the matter. Stellafera 3,836 January 25, 2013 Share January 25, 2013 (edited) Also, it may be just me, but I think Latin would not be too complicated for me to learn. I can probably memorize Latin words and phrases, then eventually learn to read and write in Latin with relative ease, considering many of the words I know in English have Latin root words in them. Eh, not quite. Latin is a very inflected language, meaning that it's essentially pointless to say, learn that "vox means voice". Not only does it not default to the English word order, but most poetry and such will put words wherever it damn pleases in the sentence. An inflected language is one that uses mostly word endings and other affixes to show what each word is doing in a sentence. In English, you diffrentiate "The dog bites the man" from "The man bites the dog" by the word order. Not so in Latin. In Latin, "Canis mordet hominem" and "Mordet hominem canis" mean the exact same thing. You have to change the endings of the words: "Canis mordet hominem" (the dog bites the man) "Canem mordent homines" (the men bite the dog, to show how verbs can change too) My school requires a few years of Latin before other languages, so I'm studying it right now. It's definitely a fun language, and no language does toilet humor like Latin. A quick look into my Latin dictionary reveals that the Romans had a lot of euphemisms for certain body parts, and even the less vulgar examples make you sound erudite when you tell someone... "Videris stercus ingens" (you look like a big poo) "Semper ubi, sub ubi" (actually meaningless, but literally translated as "always where under where", which should be said aloud for the full effect) "Morere in fossa solus" (go die alone in a hole) Edited January 25, 2013 by Stellafera 2 Latest Video: Come On: An Ode To Best Friendship "Says they don't like MMDW or Merriwether Williams: Inb4 Stellafera" - Sugar Cube
TheTEChguy27 273 January 25, 2013 Share January 25, 2013 Considering Latin is the basis of a lot of modern languages, as well as being the language still used today to name species of animals and plants, I'd certainly say it's an important one. The only phrase I know, however, is cogito ergo sum, which means the popular phrase "I think, therefore I am". It's fun to say for sure. I really wish they would teach German at my school, I'd love to learn that language. All we have is Spanish and French (useful languages for sure, but a bigger variety would be nice).

Wingnut 7,005 January 25, 2013 Share January 25, 2013 I never took Latin, but I did study Spanish which is a Romance (Latin based) language. Just knowing Latin root words enables me to interpret a lot of foreign words and even phrases. It also helps me out tremendously watching Jeopardy. I'm nowhere near good enough to be on that show. But a pair of recent Final Jeopardy answers were "carnival" and "verdict" which I was able to correctly guess from the clues and none of the contestants were able to come up with.
