There are many quotes like this... Many, many quotes... I chose this one because it cuts right to the chase (and the saddle up pun was too good) in that it blatantly says "If you are afraid and you still do something, that is braver than any idiot jumping headlong into something." Fluttershy has shown, time and time again, to be much more of a Flutterbrave by her actions. She is scared and timid UNTIL she needs to help her friends. As soon as her friends are hurt, or an innocent creature is harmed, she is on the front lines and fighting hard. Hell, she fights harder than any other pony out there, brave enough to stand up to dragons, mane based enemies, and strong enough to tame a wild manticore just with a nuzzle and pulling out a thorn. How many of you would be brave enough to do something like that? I sure as hell am not one. Flutters has become one of the bravest if not the bravest character in history, just by her willingness to fight for what she believes in. Something like that... That takes more than just a simple "No."

 

 

 

 

 

 

Since I am on a rant about her character... I posted this image here ages ago, and want to point out its prevalence again;

 

 

 

 

This is true for Flutters (and as I said AAAAAAAAAGES ago when I first posted this, Luna). It is just one more way she is truly a brave character. Before I continue, let me explain why I have not really used "pony" here. That is because... I see her as much, much more. She is a lot more important to me than a candy coated equine, hell the entire mane 6 (and a lot of the other characters) are much more than that too me. Anyways, moving on... Loneliness. Loneliness is one of the most, if not the most, soul-crushing thing possible. Flutters... Well, she doesn't have a lot of non-critter friends. Also, as we have discussed here, Flutters has been around for quite awhile. If we are to believe that the life cycles of the animals are equivalent to her own, we can guess that she has gone through quite a few Angel Bunnies over her lifetime, and will many more in the years to come. Something like that must wear down a person over time, and yet Flutters has not once shown regret or sadness over the fact she might one day have to say good bye to her critters, permanently. We saw a glimpse of this break in character when a certain Phoenix burst into flames before her eyes, and as she started to cry I could imagine every one of her animal friends who have died over the years. Yet she is still kind. Why? She has no reason too, by her nature and her profession she has seen death consistently, to the point she should be a bitter mare, weathered to age long before her time. Yet she constantly smiles and has something kind to say to her friends, critter or pony. Something like that, her desire to just smile through it all and laugh and make her friends happy... What kind of pure, unadulterated kindness does it take to do that? More than I could ever dream of being able to have, that is for sure...

 

Flutters has not once been "Shy" to me, but only the Bravest of the Brave, and the most Courageous of all the characters. Her ability to stand on the front lines and protect those behind her, out-staring Cockatrices and Dragons alike, as well as power through Luna knows how many deaths over the years, takes a test of will much higher than ANYTHING I could even imagine someone else to do. Keep on fighting Flutters, this fan club will ALWAYS support you, and I certainly will be a part of this fan club to the end, no matter what this fandom is or how the fans act. You would want me to be kind, so I will be, and hope one day to be as brave and kind as you, Butterscotch Pone.

I can relate with Fluttershy so much. My rough childhood made me terribly anti-social. As a child, I always wanted to spread love and a smile wherever I went (not in crazy Pinkie Pie party way). I always wanted to show acts of kindness. I felt it was the right thing to do, but the world is cold. My acts of kindness always seemed to have ways of hurting me, making me retreat inside of myself and behind my hair, though I still kept my kind heart. I tend to keep to myself out here in the world, and I speak so quietly. I love to sing, and out in the woods, I would break out in song, simply singing to the birds and trees around me. If anyone came within earshot, however, I would always retreat back into myself. If a friend ever needed help, I was always there, but when I was facing personal problems, it mostly annoyed them (much like rainbow's reactions in the dragonshy episode) rather than inspired them to help me. It still never stopped me from being myself. I even gave an ear to one of my friend's exes, giving her comfort and advice even when she wanted to tear me to pieces before (and for some reason was still like that afterwards). I hate to see people hurt and cry, and maybe it's because I've hurt so much and cried so much. I think that's a lot of where Fluttershy's kindness comes from. She knows what it's like to hurt, and she hates for others to feel that way.

 

We're also both scrawny but don't think we look good (I still can't meet my own eyes in the mirror).

 

Sorry for the long talk, but man...Fluttershy reminds me so much of myself in so many ways. I love her to death, and if I could hug Fluttershy and inspire her to feel more confident, I would.

I don't know that I can add much to what every pony has already said, but here goes anyway.

 

What I probably love the most about Fluttershy:

 

Fluttershy is not a cliché. She has a personality full of such depth and beauty.

 

Fluttershy avoids fame and pride (Green Isn’t Your Color; Filli Vanilli). The spotlight (literally) is anathema to her. Even when she is doing something she absolutely loves, like singing; Fluttershy takes care of herself through her shyness.

 

She is such a sensitive pony that she is easily hurt (Hurricane Fluttershy; Griffon the Brush Off). Even a judgmental eye can feel painful to this gentle pony. To avoid hurt she hides from ponies. However, without this sensitivity she could not be as kind and as caring as she is. It is her sensitive heart full of empathy that gives her kindness authentic strength.

 

She may be fearful but can put this fear aside to help others if need be (Friendship is Magic; Dragonshy; Keep Calm and Flutter On). Because of this she can be suddenly brave in defense of her friends. Even then she avoids hurting other creatures if she can.

 

However, she can also be too kind and neglect herself (Putting Your Hoof Down; Trade Ya) or overly kind and enable others in a way that is not good (It’s Not Easy Being Breezies). But that is one of the things that is wonderful about her. Because she is genuinely kind and caring she inspires these qualities in other ponies. In the above examples, Rainbowdash remembered to be loyal and to care for Fluttershy, and Seabreeze learned by her example to be kinder to others. Even Iron Will learned something about kinder assertiveness, instead of his usual aggression, with the lesson of “No means no”.

 

Her ability to care and empathize is so strong that she will give other ponies a chance when her friends would not. It is because of her that the Manticore was “defeated” (Friendship is Magic) and that Discord is reformed (Keep Calm and Flutter On). It was also in Keep Calm and Flutter On that her shrewd intuitive intelligence was made most apparent. While other ponies’ may mistake her kindness for naïveté she clearly showed and stated that this is not the case.

 

In conclusion, Fluttershy is truly a wonderful pony! She is such soft kindness with a heart of incredible compassionate strength!
