Mods for PC games have been around since the dawn of time, just about any game you can think of will have a mod for it somewhere.

 

What are your favourite mods and what game do they run on? (Mod can be stand-alone)

 

When you run mods, do you prefer ones that tie in carefully and subtly or ones that make obvious changes? (E.g skyrim armoured horses mod vs MLP mod)

 

 

 

My favourite mods of all time have to be:

DOTA (Warcraft 3? (Not sure if its 3) mod that spawned the MOBA concept and League of Legends).

Paintball Mod (COD 4 mod that gave the player paintball arenas and guns)

DayZ (Arma 2 zombie (and other players) survival mod)

Various Skyrim mods.

 

 

When I run mods, I like them to tie in with the game as much as possible rather than being completely different, I run 29 mods on skyrim, all of them are changes that tie in with the game, adding armour to horses, extra areas, that kind of thing.

The obvious one is of course DotA, it was after all the mod that spawned the genre as you said. Apart from Warcraft 3, i haven't played with a lot of mods. I remember playing Tower defense and tons of various wc3 maps during LAN parties and such.

 

Most recently must be Starcraft 2 which resemble wc3's custom maps but with better graphics and possibilities. (I actually bought the game primarily for this reason along with the campaign)

DotA is my absolute favorite and that doesn't really come off as a surprise, a lot of people would agree on that.

 

Other than that, there are countless amounts of great Oblivion mods that just make the game weird in a funny way (Like summoning Mehrune Dagon to fight for you, although he will more than often kill you instead, because of his AoE stomp)

One of my all time favourite mods is Small Horse for Amnesia It's an MLP based horror that is somehow also funny. Not for the faint hearted tho! (So be aware before playing!) Even though you can't take it too seriously: it is surprisingly fun. My favourite bit is the zombified Fluttershy.

 

The Portal Gun hack for Half Life 2 adds a new bizarre dimention to the game and really confuse baddies!

 

Also SMOD / Garrys MOD for Half Life 2 allow some silly and also amazing weapons from other games and also let you shoot actor characters in the story and killing them sometimes breaks the game lol

Well, obviously Bethesda games, be it Fallout 3, FNV, Morrowind, Oblivion or Skyrim. Those are the figurative chests of gold at the end of a rainbow. Apart from the mods themselves, those modding communities made mods more famous and known to public, just as well as training a whole generation of modders you can now find in many games all around.

 

As for the type of mods, I prefer those that make the game more "deep" and often difficult, without ruining the whole atmosphere too much. For example, my Skyrim now has a very steep difficulty curve now, no level scaling, hundreds new monster types, weapons and armors. It's fun when you can't just run everywhere and slay everything at once, because two arrows kill you. Well, I wanted to go on, but then I noticed I have over 190 mods and that would take some time to explain.

My favorite mod would be in Unreal Tournament: GOTY edition. My uncle showed me where and how I could crack the character skin file to change it to anything I wanted with the use of some of his software. So I swapped out the blue team with barney's skin, and had a epic barney vs aliens rocket battle. It was epic. Though I'm pretty sure you can find how to do it on youtube.
