After watching a certain show that we all love, I felt the need to re-watch "The Last Unicorn" after witch I re-watched  "The Lord of the Rings" cartoon trilogy (although fellowship and two towers were sort of lumped into one) and "The Hobbit". And I got to thinking, I haven't seen alot of old cartoon epics so I watched "Fire and Ice", "Wizards", and "Heavy Metal". Are there any other really good sci-fi/fantasy flics that I should know about?

For me, and a lot of people in my generation, Transformers:  The Movie has to qualify.  Yes, the plot borrows pretty heavily from Star Wars, but that's besides the point.  The action is ridiculously intense, animation is great (it really looks like 80s sci-fi anime)and unlike the TV series, this is a film that played for keeps.   Threats were real, major characters died (often violently) and the whole thing just had this bigger and more epic feel.

It may not mean as much if you don't have nostalgia for G1 Transformers, but me... I love it.

You mentioned most of the big oens from the era, though, at least as far as animation goes.  The only other one I can think of is The Black Cauldron by Disney, based on the Chronicles of Prydain books by Lloyd Alexander.  Not a lot of people liked it when it came out, but I saw it on home video years later in the late 90s and thought it was decent.  FWIW, it is Disney's first PG rated animated film, as opposed to the G rating for most of their films.

Oh God you made me go a trip down memory lane. I still have that 70's LotR cartoon on VHS, though not as whole. Ralph Bakshi's greatest work IMO even though he never was able to finish the whole story.

So... other kinds of fantasy/sci-fi movies from 70's and 80's... ... I think I have a few good ones besides the ones you already mentioned:

Battle Beyond The Stars - Really imaginative sci-fi movie about a defenseless planet that comes under attack by ruthless invaders.

The Last Starfighter - Another sci-fi movie about an ordinary boy that gets mixed up in an extraordinary event.

Tron - I think this counts as fantasy movie and if you've watched Tron Legacy, you know what this is about. Still a good classic.

Transformers: The Movie - This G1 movie is... very epic actually. I highly recommend it.

Oh, well, if you want to go beyond animated films, that's a much longer list from the 70s/80s.  You got:

the original Star Wars trilogy (of course)

Star Trek II and IV (III is ok, I and V, not so much)

Blade Runner

Alien

Aliens

Clash of the Titans

Superman/Superman II

The Dark Crystal

Labrynth

The Neverending Story (*especially recommended*)

in addition to The Last Starfighter and Tron mentioned by Koori above.
