Help me with my new Gaming PC/Tomz's PC gaming thread.

So I needed some help from some of you PC gamers. I don't know alot about computers and computer parts, I have never owned a proper gaming PC before, so I am ordering one in a few weeks. I am asking you, could these specs run games such as Battlefield 3 and on what settings?

-AMD FX-sarjan FX-4170 4x 4.20GHz quad core processor
-16GB 1600mhz DDR3
-2000GB (2TB) hard disk
-60GB OCZ Agility III SSD
-ATI Radeon HD 6950
-Rasurbon power supply

Also a discussion thread for PC gamers and everything PC gaming related

Well first off the hard disk space doesn't matter if you just want to know if you can play games. Neither does that SSD matter.

Anyways, 16GB RAM will do fine.

The graphic card is quite powerful and will do for the most games on max settings. I have two computers, one of my computers has NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 for graphic card. I can run Battlefield 3 on high settings with quite high FPS. It could probably handle Ultra too but I haven't tested (since I dont like bf3, I jsut used it to see what my gpu could handle). Anyways, your graphic card does better than a GTX 660 so you shouldn't have any problems.

Though I'm not sure if that processor would be enough to play games on ultra. While it has a good clock rate at 4.2 GHz (compared to intel cpus that usually has around 3.4 GHz) I'm not sure how powerful it actually is.

If someone knows flease fill in smile.png

Also, are you going to buy the PC built or are you going to build it yourself? It sounds like you're ordering a built one but I'm just making sure incase you've picked parts. Cause "Rasurbon power supply" doesn't say much. How many W is it?

I'm ordering it built and eventually will be replacing some parts as time goes by. It doesn't really seem to list the specific power supply along with the specs.

EDIT: Also, I live in Finland so that text was originally written in Finnish, I couldn't translate it very well.

Well since you're ordering a built one, it explains why they doesn't show how much W the PSU is. They've chosen one that works with the system. But anyways, the computer will probably handle the most things you'll throw at it unless you're trying to play Crysis 3 with dual 1440p monitors on ultra or something like that, haha.

I'd like to hear from somebody else since I'm not sure about that processor.

And don't worry about the english, I'm Swedish (hi neighbour) so I know how it feels sometimes ;)

Ok, well thanks for all the help otherwise. But I don't plan on using any dual monitors or anything like that since I don't edit videos or anything, I just plan on getting it to play games myself.

Dual monitors can be used for games too :) you'll get twice the width on the game.

Anyways, no problems. You can always Google one of your components followed by "performance" if you want more information about how good for example your graphic card is. Also, do you know which motherboard the computer will be using?

Sweet stuff man. I have some thought's about this too that id like to post.

The AMD FX Zambezi you put out there is fairly nice, and I personally like the clock speed. To be on the safe side though, I would go with one of the Zambezi 6 core processors or go straight for the AMD FX Vishera-8350 8 core.

16 gb of 1600mhz DDR3 RAM is good for multitasking lots of things. I would look into getting the Corsair DDR3 or GSkill RipJaws X DDR3.

2TB HDD is fairly nice too, though my friend told me that since 2TB and 3TB hard drives spin a different way, that over time as you cram a terrabyte worth of memory it slows down the speed of the drive itself. But other then that, I would look into a Western Digital brand 2Tb hard drive for its reliability.

The 60Gb OCZ Agility III SSD is good for the HDD above ^ so im assuming that this is what you would be using to boot the computer.

The ATI Radeon 6950 is a great card for gaming performance, though ive never watched any tests done from it. I would personally go for one of the 7 series (like the HIS Radeon 7870 iceQ which can play BF3 and Crysis 2/3 at 40-70 fps depending on the clock)

I dont know what the Rasurbon power supply is since I looked it up and nothing came to be. SO since I didnt find anything, I would go for a Corsair 850w power supply with an 80+ bronze/silver/gold rating on it to save some power and money.

Also, you didnt mention about any type of Motherboard you would want. Unfortunately I dont know too well about motherboards so you might want someone else's help with that.

Same with the heatsync for the computer (unless you want to use the one that comes with the processor) and the outer shell which holds it all.

For you I would mabye use your heatsync that you get, or spend some money to get a Corsair Hydro series Liquid cooling system with dual 120mm fans or something like that.

And for the outer shell of your case, I would look at getting one of the Antec Mid tower cases or an NZXT Phantom Mid tower. If you were to upgrade to a huge power supply, 6 hard drives, 2 SSD's, a Liquid cooling system, and mabye a 3 way SLI or Crossfire AMD Radeon/Nvidia graphics card, then I would go for the full tower case.

If you're not doing something like that, then I would go for a Mid tower.

I was also thinking of ordering a different set, with the same processor to reduce cost. What would you think of these specs?

  • 1 x 300MBs Wireless PCI Card WiFi Network Adaptor
  • 1 x 2TB (2000GB) Sata III Hard Drive
  • Cooler Master Elite 430 Case
  • 1 x Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE Sound Card
  • Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
  • 16GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz Gaming RAM
  • 4.2GHz AMD FX-4170 4-Core CPU
  • Corsair Hydro H60 Water CPU Cooler
  • Xigmatek 600W PSU
  • 1 x 24x DVD-RW Optical Drive
  • AMD ATI Radeon HD 7870 2GB Graphics Card
  • 1 Year Standard Warranty

Actually, everything seems very nice in this. The Corsair Hydro H60 Water CPU Cooler may be a bit too much, unless you're willing to overclock it.

The power supply is also a little low, but for what's in it will do fine.

I was planning overclocking the CPU to 4.4 GHz, but what power supply should I select instead? I could really use some help with this.

If you must go with AMD for some reason, make sure the second number in the processor model is a 3, such as AMD FX 4300 as these are an updated version of the 4100 you have listed originally. They're much better than bulldozer but both are very power hungry. In terms of a power supply, I'd recommend a Seasonic power supply, something like this. Seasonic tends to be pricey but top notch quality and this one is capable of pushing nearly all of its power where you need it to. Also, any particular reason you're getting a soundcard?

Outside of those factors, looks alright.

Edit: If you decide to do some power supply comparisions, you should have a minium wattage of 550 and I'd also look at Antec and Corsair as both of those brands tend to be very good as well.

I can neither confirm nor deny myself being the cause of electrical related malfunctions. Anyways, you wouldn't happen to have a jar of replacement magic smoke would you?
