Why would Celestia turn Twilight and Cadence into princesses? *SPOILER*

You know, reading all of this almost makes me think that Twilight made herself immortal, and in the process outliving all of her friends.

But other than that, with a new pair of wings, does that mean Twilight is immortal?  If not, then why the Hell would the writers have two one-thousand year-old alicorns, but two who are around young adulthood?

If they didn't make Celestia and Luna over one-thousand years old, I wouldn't have to worry about Twilight outliving her friends.  I mean, it's a friggin' children's cartoon based after toys for little girls!  There is no way they will ever reveal Twilight or Cadence's lifespans, not even in a Q&A panel of some convention!

Actually Cadance would be quite young, for the fact that she was born a orphaned pegasus and later became an alicorn to then be adopted by Celestia (as stated in Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell). Cadance and Twilight are as I like to call 'awakened' alicorns, while Celestia and Luna are 'born' alicorns, this alone would reasonably suggest there could and likely will be differences.

Also it has officially been stated by staff Twilight will not outlive her friends, and (with additional support by the above mentioned book) will not be living Ponyville or her friends.

Wait what? You mean to tell me that Cadence was originally a pegasus with innate unique abilities that eventually ascended to an alicorn? She wasn't born that way?

Well I suppose that isn't much of a spoiler to Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell if you've managed to read it or wiki its summary like I did, but there goes that outdated spoiler.

It is worth noting though. On the outset it looks like Twilight Sparkle is a magic user prodigy born "destined" to be an alicorn princess by the hand of Celestia or some higher authority. You could even argue that in Cutie Mark Chronicles the whole notion of "destiny" of the Mane 6 is reinforced by the coincidental connection of all their cutie mark discoveries to Dash's sonic rainboom. Of course, the counterargument here is that it may have just been purely coincidental and other ponies could have had their cutie marks influenced and revealed during the sonic rainboom moment as well.

I really do expect great revelations and events for season 4, but I hope the writers don't just try to justify Alicorn Twilight by boiling it down to "its her destiny to save Equestria as the chosen one!" tripe. If this is truly a show that is meant to teach adolescents and others, and emphasize the virtues of friendship and goodwill, then the writers ought to stress those themes, at least in the major plot episodes. Kids don't need to be force fed this destiny crap and I won't go into the princess stereotype yet; they already get enough of this from the media and religion. Writing, animation and overall production and direction permitting hopefully the show will reveal enlightening and positive light about Twilight and the Mane 6's futures among other itching questions.

On the positive note the show thus far has demonstrated great character development that ties in well. Even Spike played a key role with Twilight's support in the Crystal Empire arc. I really do give Megan McCarthy a lot of credit for her work and picking up where Lauren Faust left. Instead of giving Twilight the stereotypical "chosen 1 saves the day" climax, she instead puts her faith in Spike who ultimately saves the Crystal Empire, despite being a supporting, though nonetheless pivotal, character.

What seems to separate Twilight from other skilled magic users in her calibre, namely Star Swirled Lulamoon and Trixie is that though she's incredibly talented and gifted, she also falls back and supports her friends, maintaining that elusive rare close tie that the outcast Trixie and solitary and antisocial Starswirled could not. Magical Mystery Cure does seem to reinforce and justify this rationale, as opposed to pure destiny as the reason that Twilight ascended, but good intentions, writing and music cannot justify poor planning, execution and presentation.

I really do want to say that Magical Mystery Cure does justice to Twilight ascension and that everything will be fine. I do really. But the rushed and forced nature of the Season 3 finale creates more questions while good, also opens up many holes that could either ascend the series to success or sink it to an early grave.

Let's just all hope Twilight and her alicorn ascension lead her to find a greater connection to her friends and values and not some ill fated plot. I expect and hope for similar prospects for Cadence, a character who really needs more room for growth than the writers and fanbase might acknowledge.

My theory (before hearing about Cadence getting a real backstory) was that Cadence wwas supposed to be the next ruler but something went wrong and she lacked the magical talent required because she sacrificed it to save Twilight while she was Twilight's pony-sitter.

She then "retired" from ever trying to be a true princess and Celestia focused on Twilight instead, guiding her path through life.

It will never happen, but it would be interesting to see history repeat itself, with Celestia/Luna ascending elsewhere, Twilight and Cadence taking over management of day/night, then Cadence going bad in the same way Luna did :)

Loads of interesting thoughts... I doubt the newest villain will be more powerful than all the previous ones you mentioned. You are right about another thing, as well. The only way to find out is in Season 4.

My theory is this: In The Cutie Mark Chronicles, after Twilight's "magic episode", Celestia saw how much power Twilight really had, thus trained her to be her student. Something similar happened with Cadance. (From Wikipedia: "When she grew up she reversed a love-stealing spell cast by a pony called Prismia. Prismia wore a magic-enhancing necklace that amplified her evil and jealousy, but when Cadance confronted her, the necklace amplified Cadance's love. Once Prismia changed her horrible ways, Cadance was surrounded by magical energy and transported to a strange place where she met Celestia, who adopted her as her royal niece.") Therefore, Celestia saw something special in both of them, so they both have some sort of special power that Celestia and Luna may or may not have. And of course, Equestria needs them because of that.

It's been a while since I was paying attention to any of these threads. What, exactly, changed your mind from "Anyone who says Twilight isn't immortal is wrong! I don't know how, but they're wrong!" to, well, this?

I certainly know how. The only "evidence" that people say proves Twilight won't be immortal is the scene with Cadence (which doesn't make sense because Immortal doesn't mean born as an adult), and the tweet by Meghan McCarthy saying she won't. Uhm, didn't the staff say before MMC was announced that TS wasn't going to be made an Alicorn?

I am no longer active in the fandom or site. Thank you.

Cadence posseses a great understand of Love which manifests a unique form of magic that can make anypony fall in love with another pony. Being able to channel 'Love' is required to use the Crystal Heart so Celestia no doubt believed Cadence could be the Crystal Princess if she became an Alicorn.

Twilight literally possess insane levels of magic ability, she did a time spell as a filly, a spell Trixie need the Alicorn Amulet to pull off. This would mark Twilight as a possible bearer of the element of Magic (which her school is probably set up to find). Making Twilight an alicorn would simply boost her already considerable magic further still to better protect equestria.

My theory is Twilight is indeed being prepared for something. So is Cadence Think about it guys:

1. Reforming Discord

2. Reawakening of Crystal Empire

3. Dignitary from Saddle Arabia

4. Twilight's transformation

5. Cadence's wedding.

If we link these things together, there is a bigger picture of what's to come. Cadence is the princess of Love, her wedding only serves to increase her power, Twilight's friendship also made her more powerful. Discord should be someone sealed forever, but Celestia risked letting him out. It could very well be that she needs his help for what's to come.

If I have to guess, I'd say it has something to do with the everfree forest and why the old castle was abandoned.

That makes a lot of sense actually, that is an awesome theory.

In many ways, are Cadence and Twilight linked (eg: Shining armour, foal sitter blah blah blah...)

I hope this does happen, it would be pretty cool °0°

The only use for Discord's magic that comes to mind for me is the Everfree Forest. It was originally meant to be expanding, as if the whole place itself is a living thing that encroached the sisters original castle. Seen some folks suggest its weird growth feeds of the magic residue left after the sisters first fought each other (which would explain why the castle is as destroyed as it is. Also is the castle in the center of the Everfee? not quite sure.)

Discord warped the entire landscape of Ponyville. He could probably do the same to the Everfree or at least push back its borders.

She was a pegasus that got a horn later on? I can imagine that considering Twilight was a unicorn that got wings later on. I still don't like Cadence, though. <.<

No, I looked up Princess Cadance, she was an allicorn when she was younger. Yet I believe that might be possible. It says also that she's a niece of Princess celestria... who knows?

Actually she was a pegasus, she was born such, who later became an alicorn. Thus a pegasus gaining a horn. I would suggest looking up Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell for more information.

Also I have this when it comes to destiny and cutie marks:

A cutie mark is simply a visual expression of a pony's potential, of a talent they excel at and enjoy doing. Their talent and ability at something they're good at, the greatest expression of there being. Yes it could potentially be called destiny or perhaps it was a misuse of the word though I will also state I feel that what happened in the Magical Mystery Cure could never be able to happen naturally. A pony cannot be stuck with a cutie mark or talent they don't enjoy, nor would it represents a destiny they're forced to follow but instead it is one they have chosen to follow.

It might be a way for Celestia to keep power. It is possible that a pony who has mastered something needs an alicorn to act as a catalyst for the transformation, or it might all be an act. Twilight Sparkle and Cadence, despite being alicorns themselves, answer to Celestia, who holds the majority of power. If others think that they need approval to transform even after they earn it, it makes Celestia's power look greater. She might also do it to expand her power. Celestia can only do so much first hand, but with others answering to her and ruling in her name, Celestia can have greater control and a wider sphere of influence. Whether alicorn magic is needed to trigger the earned status or not, I think it all comes back to power, whether it be expanding it or creating an illusion of it.

I have a theory. Cadence is Celestia's neice, as well as Luna's. Once Cadence married Shining Armour, Twilight Sparkle became Cadence's sister-in-law. That would make Twilight Celestia's neice-in-law, wouldn't it? Celestia seems to have favorisim over her neices, dosen't it? My theory is that once one of Celestia's neices dose something exceptional that she can't ingnore, she turns them into a princess for a sign of showing her graditute. That is like if your neice painted an amazing picture, and you gave them a castle and guards and everything.

You kinda should have done the *SPOILER* first. But in my opinion an empire such at Equestria needs people to govern it, and with the aid of two of the most loving and level headed ponies in Equestria the empire would proposer far more than it could have without their help.

This gets into the question "How much does Celestia know?"  For example, in the pilot Twilight learns of Nightmare's return from an ancient book.  Who wrote that book & who left it where Twilight could find it?  Did Twilight really figure out something Celestia hadn't? Even though C cast the spell in the 1st place & had a 1000 year head start?  Look at Twilight's cutie mark & ask "What does 'the stars will aid in her escape' mean?" (More than one her escaped that night).  Later episodes revealed Twilight's cutie mark is on the Tree of Harmony & Ponyville was founded in its location because of Celestia.  Call it a coincidence the celebration was held where the Element Bearers were?

So, IMO, it is HIGHLY probable Celestia hoof picked Twilight & groomed her to be an alicorn.  When Celestia sent Twilight Star Swirl's spell book, she knew exactly what would happen.

It might have been an accident that Cadance ascended, but if so that gave Celestia the evidence it was possible.  She was looking for Twilight or some one like her.

"What does 'the stars will aid in her escape' mean?"

Two-fold.  The stars aided in NMM's escape from the moon.  But they also aided in Luna's escape from her NMM persona's control at the end of the premiere.

Anyway, I went back and looked at the finale of Season 3, and something occurred to me.  I mentioned this in a previous topic.  But I don't think Celestia was really the one that turned Twilight into an Alicorn.  I think that was something that Twilight did herself, by basically doing what could not be done (cosmically speaking), in completing the spell nobody else could complete.

Now before anyone says anything, I can still fully believe she made her a Princess.  As I said before, I think the title of 'Princess' being given to a pony in the MLP FiM world is more of a formal title, like being knighted.  So it is definitely not out of line to assume that royalty could bestow a title like that on someone.

But I still don't believe being an Alicorn is a requirement for being a Princess, nor do I believe that all Alicorns are Princesses.  The former notion has already been proven to be untrue, as we've met other Princesses that aren't Alicorns, and the latter is just absurd, as that means there is at least one entire race that is made up of nothing but Princesses (though it would make for a humorous subtle Gilbert & Sullivan reference, if they were to make a joke about how every pony in the Alicorn town claims to be a Princess).

But Twilight's vision at the end of Season 3 was more likely just an inner journey/new-age thing, where she had to rediscover everything about herself based on all her experiences up to that point.  I will admit, I think the finale could have benefitted greatly from an additional part that further explained this, but that's more/less how I see what happened.  Celestia's appearance was likely an image Twilight's mind (of someone who had alot of influence in her life) created to help her through her remaining inner conflicts, and ultimately aid her in completing her ascension.

Maybe.  But then, look at The Crystal Empire (S3 opener).  Luna wanted to handle it, but Celestia insisted Twilight had to.  Why?  IMO, she was trying to get Twilight as much experience as possible so that Twilight would be ready to ascend.  Cadance may have 'just happened' but Celestia made Twilight 'just happen'.

IMO, she was trying to get Twilight as much experience as possible so that Twilight would be ready to ascend.

It's possible that Celestia may have known that Twilight was going to ascend at some point (or at least known that there was a better-than-average chance of this happening).  Given how long she's lived for (at least 2000 years, that we know of), it stands to reason that she has seen this happen numerous times in her life, even to ponies we haven't heard about.  But that doesn't mean she was the cause of it.  She likely just knew from experience that this was what ultimately awaited Twilight, and she probably knew ever since she met her as a filly.  That's why she wanted to prepare her, in case this happened.

The image Twilight saw of her in MMC was likely just a mental projection of a pony that had enormous influence on her life, and was her mind's way of working through her remaining issues so she could ultimately ascend.  I really wish we had a second part to that episode, because it feels like the writers wanted to tell a bigger story than they were able to.
