Drum Equalizing

Hey there Creative Resources

So, I'm at a bit of a loss as to what exactly you would bring out in a kick to make it stand out in the mix.  Whenever I bring out the mid-range, it doesn't do much, bringing out the high-range just doesn't sound right, and I want my bass uncluttered, so I would chop off some of the low-end.  This is probably some basic EQing trick, but I haven't stumbled across it if it has.  I'm really looking for a drum that would stand out while there is a bunch of stuff going on, such as in this song:

I'm starting to think it's a result of the sample, but it's so punchy that it makes me think it's just really good EQing.

While I'm at it, how do you choose which drum samples to layer?  I've heard that you can only layer drums with differing frequencies otherwise they cancel out, and most of my samples (Vengeance Pack FTW) are heavy on the low end.

Any help?

Balance everything out. Have the low end and high end at the same value and turn the middle down lower. But not to low, just slightly below the low and high ends.
