What do you think of Derpy?

Number one Derpy fan here, I would say I'm also a hardcore Derpy Hooves fan, almost all of my drawings where dedicated to her. I have done around currently probably about 80 and I can say that more then half of them probably 3/4 of them are Derpy. Although it didn't happen when I did digital simply because I made the digital ones either for birthdays or had someone actually kind of tell me I should make one about a certain character.

 

Otherwise, I would only draw Derpy. I love her and noone can tell me she isn't special, I feel like she has been getting a lot of hate lately on this forum and in other places. This isn't fair, the reason why I love her so much is very simple.. She is basically me in Equestria, yeah she could just as well be my OC. I relate so much to her, she is different but she isn't affraid of being who she is.

It took me years to start being myself, years and do you all want to know who made me realize that I should just be myself.. Yes, a fictional character called Derpy Hooves. She tought me through a ton of fan made content as well as from the episodes that it's okay to be different, that it's okay to just be yourself, for me that was a really big thing.

 

Also, when I saw #Savederpy, that was actually the first pony video I saw, if I remember correctly.. She is the reason I gave the show a chance, I only wanted to see her. I watched all of the episodes untill that one faithfull day.. I heard Derpy talk.

 

Of course looking for Derpy lead to me seeing Fluttershy although don't forget Derpy was the one that started all of this, she is the one that made my life better. So there is no wonder I love her way too much then most people would think normal, obessed maybe.. I don't care she is my beacon of hope. She restored my faith in humanity, she got me into the fandom, she got me starting to draw, she got me interested in trying to make a song about her. She got me interested in everything, my life was empty and she brought me everything, just by being who she is.

 

She is cute, relatable and she has the best colour scheme, best mane and tail and she is the cutest pony if not best pony!

 

So there you have it, number one Derpy fan and proud!

So far no, yes Derpy's voice was changed and because of the controversy it is unfortunately unlikely that she will get another speaking role but she has made some appearances in the background since. The season 3 finale had a bunch of Derpy appearances though it can be hard to notice them with all the other stuff going on, but there is a rumor that they may be gradually phasing Derpy out which so far hasn't been confirmed but is plausible. I just posted a youtube video the other day on my thoughts on the Derpy situation, I didn't think I would but because I understand exactly what it is like to be singled out for differences real and perceived the Derpy issue is a bit personal to me.

I don't know how can I start this..oh well.

 

Firstly, she was originally an animation error. Then someone pointed it out, named her, and bam. Part of why she was so loved was because the fandom made her like that, a fandom named character.

 

Secondly, she has a very cute design and a very likable personality/attitude. She is clumsy, helpful (Her part at "The last roundup", where she was trying to help RD)  and innocent.

 

And lastly, well...

 

She's Derpy.

 

Pretty much all of the reasons listed here are -exactly- why I love her. She's so bubbly and always happy and smiling and....yeah...:3

I honestly don't think a Derpy episode would be a very good one. At that point it starts to delve into fan service (can that term be used that way?). Derpy is cute and a nice little nod to the fans, but I don't think she could really have much depth as a character.

 

All that aside, I understand the controversy, but I don't really find it necessary. I've never been under the impression that "derp/derpy" and were terms used to describe mentally handicapped people; to me it just seemed like something to describe general stupidity. I thought Derpy just seemed like a ditz, not mentally handicapped.

Naw but I think that Derpy is just one fricken adorable pony  I think she is best where she is at now, I feel no real need for a full episode. I also think that the fandom did a pretty good job on her too

I think shes a cool character, her appearances in the show are cool.

 

But the coolest part is all the fandom interpretation and how they got her a speaking role in the show(even if it was edited) I think thats pretty impressive.

 

Also the fan creations, art, animations, ect ect ect are the best part of her though, while shes cool to see in the show the fan interpretations make her awesome in my eyes.

I like that she is a pegasus pony that likes muffins.

I love Derpy. I know it's pointless liking a background character, let alone loving her, but I can't help it. She's cute, I like the personality the fandom has given her, I like the characters origins and the link it created between the creators and the fans, and she is the perfect time-travel buddy.

 

If they ever did want to do an episode with her, as unlikely as that now seems, I say keep to the original plan: gradually make her a part of more episodes before giving her a story.

 

I'd watch it. It's blatant pandering, sure, but It'd be fun.

Doctor Whooves and Assistant is what made me really love Derpy. The cameos were cute, and the fanart helped, but still.

 

 

 

 

As for my opinion on the whole controversy?

 

Yeah, I'm firmly on the side of those that consider her offensive. She does not bother me personally, but I have to agree with them:

 

1. Derpy makes fun off cross-eyed people by literally providing nothing but clumsiness in the show.

2. She's also portrayed as dumb(or absurdly naïve to the degree they are indistinguishable). Sorry, but she is.

 

You can't even argue that she weren't meant to be dumb- her "project name" was ditzy, which has the primary function of stupid or airhead. Derpy is not as bad(as derpy as a slur for retarded people is not a primary function)- but still "Accident-prone" or "I goofed" as a name? For the one young character on the show with a noticeable handicap? Yeesh.

 

 

I won't be starting protests, or bringing the torch. I'm fine with fan Derpy and Cameo Derpy- but I firmly agree with the notion that she is offensive as portrayed in her one real appearance. This is not because the show writers were malicious, but because they didn't think this through properly- I mean it was just a fandom nod in the first place.

 

 

I like to think I see both perspectives- both of those that are annoyed that there was controversy, but also those that brought the controversy.

That is actually a lot more reasonable than anything I have seen from anyone on that side of the fence, but just out of curiosity though exactly how do you believe Derpy should be portrayed? I keep hearing the Derpy complainers complaining but so far the only one I have heard provide any sort of suggestions is PonyEcho who said this.

 

 

Changing her name to Bubbles for the cannon but keeping Derpy around for fannon material would be the best solution.

 

Keep the running gag of her clumsiness there. But also have her in less clumsy situations too. Or maybe just keep her as a were's Waldo of MLP.

 

Don't call it out, unless the time is right and it can still focus one the side characters since Derpy is a Background Pony (deal with it)

I think the idea behind her is cute at best and embarrassing at worst. My opinion on Derpy is more my opinion on her fanatics who think she deserves a serious spot in the series...nevermind that she's basically an OC. The pony herself is fine, I like the muffins and the idiocy but I don't think she's important, she's good for a joke, in fact she's a walking joke, but I don't find her as the representation of the fandom as a lot of people put it. And why would you want her to be? You want a bumbling, cross eyed Pegasus that doesn't know what the fuck is going on to be your avatar in their universe?

 

I know that this is turning into a rant about that subsect of the fandom, but I'm in too deep and I need to finish. Let's go back to Derpygate eh? A simple piece of fanservice completely exploded, I know that is was the fans who overreacted but I don't even know who started. Myself, I was involved I guess you could say. I had an opinion, but I didn't spam about it like a lot of people tended to do. Hell I was new at the time, and just joined up on Pchan I think, and funnily enough in the back of my mind I was expecting someone to complain. Because I just knew that someone, somewhere would have a problem with her cameo. Lo and behold, we had ourselves a civil war. That whole fiasco said to me "We need a leader" and I know how that sounds, but hear this; We bronies, as a fandom, are too large and erratic to just spazz out like that. It looks bad, very bad and I think precautions should be taken to ensure something like that doesn't repeat.

 

I am so off track right now. Ultimately, In the begining when I was that guy in the begining, I didn't even care about Derpy, I just hated the concept of being censored when no wrong had been done. Anyway, uh like with all things in the fandom, Derpy is fine when done right, when done as a joke. She really shouldn't be seen as some Super Awesome character.

My opinion is that it's fine that she is clumsy- just not as over the top clumsy+dumb as in her one portrayal. All of the Mane Six have major klutz moments. Innocent and naive, and a little clumsy is alright. It's once you get clumsy airhead it goes a bit bad. Blimey, thank the stars they didn't go with the original plan for the episode.

 

The reason the building needed repair? Derpy hit it with a bolt on accident.

 

 

 

As for the name....

 

I am partial to Bright Eyes for several reasons.

 

1. It makes a positive statement about her eyes.

 

2. It fits a bubbly, happy individual.

 

3. It's a name from an earlier gen coming back+I believe that the G3 Bright Eyes(a bit part character) had more or less Derpy's exact coloration.

Speaking for myself I see Derpy not as the representation to end all representations of the fandom but I do see her as one of many representations along with many of the other background ponies as well as secondary and main characters. To me she says nobody is perfect and it is okay to be different which is actually consistent with the values that bronies claim to believe in with the whole "love and tolerate" thing.

I absolutely love Derpy. She's my favorite background pony and I love the fan creations surrounding her. I'd really like to see her in another episode and become a secondary character instead of just being a novelty background pony.
