You don't have to cry to make tears; Crying is merely an overproduction of tears. Yawning can also produce tears (and yes, I know certain animes can make that rather apparent).

 

Either they're tired and when they yawn, some of the tears fall into whatever they're slaving over, or they're really suffering and they actually cry. I really don't know... BST implies suffering, because you have blood and sweat... So it may imply actual crying...

 

But again, this is overanalysis of a common American idiom. Like taking things for a spin (do you actually spin something?), or getting the lead out (why do you have so much lead, anyway?), and so on...
