I find the severe lack of flame war in Canterlot Castle disappointing

 

Could someone explain the "On proactive moderation" thread to me in a not-textwall form?

 

Simply put: Evilshy asked feld0 why he thinks proactive moderation is a good idea.

 

Proactive mods is simply having moderators going around, patrolling in the forum for any wrong doing and act accordingly, without waiting for any reports from the members.

 

But it is very prone to bias as not every mod will share the same view on the rules. And if a member points out that a mod is at fault, others mod (most of the time) will try to defend it, even when it was indeed a mistake.

Feld0 replies, if indeed there was a mistake about moderation, everypony can easily contact him or zoopy or swoopy, and they will look at the case and try to clear the issue.

 

Proactive moderation was taken because Feld0 wished to create the best community in quality terms.

 

If there was a lot of mindless spam scattered around the forum because the members hesitant to report it, it will not make a good impression. Instead the mods will try to seek and destroy the spam, set things right, and generally cleans up the forum.

 

And a clean forum also get more chance to net up some google search, so it's a plus.

Why not a reactive moderation?

 

This forum already had it share of reactive moderation, but the problem come from the members themselves, because sometimes we are hesitant to report things because:

• they feel the need to "do something about it" and respond (usually results in a flame war)
• they believe that backseat modding will draw a moderator's attention to the thread
• they're in doubt whether something is "report-worthy" and don't want to waste our time
• they're scared of the staff
• they're worried they'll get in trouble for "mis-reporting" something
• they believe the report will be ignored because we're a gang of power-drunk bigots
• they feel like a taddle-taler

 

Sometimes the community simply can't moderate itself, especially when a popular member did something that usually warant a banhammer, lots of people will try to defend his case.

Conclusion: It's better to have many patrol guards rather than to have them waiting on their watch tower. That way the hiding burglar can be caught before someone get hurt

Seems right enough, but I thought this was standard on most forums...? A mod's job is to look for problems and eliminate/help reduce them. Did they really not do this beforehand?

Not really perse. Before Feld0 took the latest batch of new mods, everything is under passive moderation (anyone can be such a massive jerk to everyone and gone away with it if no one reported it)
