If anything it should be less insulting cause they're younger. Their insult shouldn't have anywhere near as much meaning as someone around or older than you.

 

I was just brought up to respect people older than me, and when I see someone younger insult me, it feels like they think they're better than me.

Respect should be earned, not handed out freely. I don't see the point of judging someone based on their age, considering all of the things I've seen older people than me do. Age plays a major part, but it's not the determining factor based solely on it alone. It's not less insulting if the younger person has more wits and more common sense than the older person.

 

Whatever, I don't like being insulted. The fact that he's much younger than me made me think that he was just doing some little kid trolling. Also I hope you weren't trying to justify him.

Now I'm starting to think that either this Osterrland are not exactly capable to survive without relying on occupied land, or their religion speaks of violence. The difference between religion's books between Midland and Osterrland kinda reminds me of Catholics and Protestants. Essentially the same but that not-so-subtle difference was enough to make them at each other's throat.

 

Oh my bloody this is priceless. It's almost a miracle that Osterrland hasn't crumbled down under its own weight with such shitstorm brewing under the table.

 

I have my own fiction world too, but i never really bothered to expand the civilization like what you did here. I focused a bit too much on the lore and the treachery between my characters that caused the proverbial waste treatment plant to explode right next to the industrial fan factory

 

Your interest in my ideas makes me feel so appreciated, almost to where I can feel better from the drama occurring earlier on the thread.

 

Now back to the matter at hand. Osterrland can survive fine without occupied land. They don't even occupy Midland. The only time Osterran troops are there is during border skirmishes at Midland's western border with, big surprise, another nation that Osterrland is at war with. Otherwise, there's no occupying force. Osterrland doesn't have the resources for it anyhow. The reason they insist on Midland staying under the Osterran flag is pride and nationalistic religion. One of their religious scriptures talks about the beginning of the world, where a single mountain stretched from one side of Goss to the other. One interpretation is that one superior nation and people will conquer the world, and that nation will be Osterrland. So in a way, Osterrans have a superiority complex taught from birth.

 

I had originally based Osterrland on a combination of the British Empire, the Holy Roman Empire, and the Ancient Roman Empire. Midland was based on Britonia during Roman times mixed with Ireland and Scotland. Also you're right about the conflict seeming like the Catholic/Protestant struggle. I based the religious tension on that.

 

The other struggle in the world is between the Cathedral and the Valindaean Orthodox Cult. Therein lies a special irony. See, before there was an Osterrland or Midland, all of current-day Midland and most of Osterrland made up a barbarian nation called the Thyran Empire (though that name was ascribed much later by historians). They were basic pagans with an animistic religion, ruled over by chieftains and "magicians", but their territories were eventually conquered by a religious crusade that originated in the Valindaean archipelago. Years earlier, they had conquered most of southern Halvarrland and hired many local warriors as mercenaries to fight and help convert the Thyran tribes. These invaders from Valindaeum had, before the invasion, conquered their own land, renaming it Acclesia, calling themselves Acclesians with Acclesiism as their religion. The Acclesian priest-king had envisioned to conquer the world, so that it would all become Acclesia, and after conquering Valindaeum, he moved to Halvarrland and then south into Thyr. Ultimately, he succeeded, and most Thyran tribes were defeated and forcefully converted. Of course this priest-king eventually died, and unrest in Valindaeum toppled the theocracy while individual Valindaean princes and barons fought among themselves. Acclesia on the mainland faltered as well, though the religion didn't, and feudalism took hold as secular leaders warred similarly for land over the next few decades until territory became more or less stable. The same thing happened in Midland. Halvarrland, though stabilized quickest, reverting back to their traditional beliefs except in the far south where Osterran states emerged. After Osterrland was unified, one of their earliest wars was with Valindaeum, which was also unified, save for several islands. The war was ignited because of trade disputes, but once Valindaeum was conquered, one of the first things the Cathedral did was proclaim Valindaean Orthodoxy heretical. Ironically, this religion was closest to the original Acclesiism that was used to conquer the people who would eventually become Osterran. In all, the religion conquered itself.
