S1 & S3 Conjunction Paradox

This occurred to me one time where I was re-watching the Crystal Empire. In the episode, it is told that King Sombra was sealed away for one thousand years, by both Celestia and Luna.

 

This means that Luna had not been sent to the moon yet.

 

Now, when Luna was actually sent to the moon, it was also for a thousand years. Once that thousand years had elapsed, she returned as Nightmare Moon.

 

The problem is, if she had begun her thousand years after King Sombra began his, then shouldn't she have also returned from the thousand years after King Sombra had returned from his? She can't have spent a shorter amount of time on the moon because the date of her return was precise. It might be that King Sombra's 1000-year banishment was approximate, as the Pegasus Royal Guard seemed to be taken by surprise at his return.

 

What do you think, guys? Simple plot hole, or is there another explanation?

To me, it's just a round number for the time frame. It might have 1003 years ago, or 1005 years ago. While Luna was just a normal 1000 years.

NMM's return was likely on the moon for very, very close to 1000 years, because the stars had to be aligned properly. Astronomical events like this are very exact.

 

Sombra's 1000 years was more likely a round number, since it was a historical thing, where generalizations are more common.

I'm sure you're reading way to far into this, but as far as reasoning goes, I must agree with the rest of the bronys.

 

1000 is just a nice round number to deal with, and it sounds deep and mysterious. The legends are most likely just that- legends. It is impossible to keep track of every single year since the incident in that large amount of time. As you could see in S1, nopony seemed to care or even know who Nightmare Moon was or why she should return. It is just easier to understand as it all probably happened around the same time.

It turns out that Luna was not the jealous sister, but Celestia was, because her day could not match the beauty of Luna's night, not to mention that Luna was the brave sister who first stood up to Discord and Sombra. Thus, she cursed Luna and turned her into Nightmare Moon using the Elements of Harmony, and then banished her to the moon. She then hid the Elements away, knowing that only they could lift the curse she put upon Luna.

 

Since she had a thousand years of just her ruling, she was able to rewrite history to make herself look better, and, once Nightmare Moon returned, Luna had gone crazy and really thought she was the jealous sister and that she really was evil and wanted to wipe out Celestia's day, and, with that, Celestia allowed her faithful student and her friends to lift the curse, since now Luna believed it was all her fault and that she was the jealous sister.

 

And, of course, Celestia is now raising Twilight to be her next fall pony in case something goes wrong again, just as she had Cadance as a fall pony in case the whole Sombra coming back thing went wrong.

 

See, once you start thinking about it, it all makes sense. After all, Celestia made some mistakes while rewriting history and got lazy, saying everything happened one thousand years ago.

I have this theory....

Instead of just making the Crystal Empire disappear for his revenge, he may have let his dark magic slowly affect Luna(etc. left a portion of his soul behind that would break into Luna's mind). So, it wasn't entirely Luna's fault she became evil.

I usually don't like the whole "Celestia is evil" theory (okay, guys, she ain't that bad) but I now just realize that if they wanted to, they could totally make it so she's like Glinda the Good Witch, who was secretly the villain of Wizard of Oz. Seriously, look it up.

 

I don't really like the theory that Sombra corrupted Luna, though. Makes the mythology seem smaller and it makes Luna's descent into darkness more tragic if she was the one who started the process.

 

I imagine Nightmare Moon to be like (stick with me here) Freddy Krueger in the last Elm Street movie, New Nightmare, which takes place in the "real world" (as in, it follows the cast and crew who made the original Elm Street in real life). Anyway, it's revealed that an ancient evil somehow became trapped within the Elm Street movies, and when they finish the series, it escapes. Rather than retain its original demon form, the ancient evil keeps the form and personality of Freddy Krueger, partly because it's been stuck in that form for so long, and partly because it enjoys it.

 

Same with Nightmare Moon. Ancient, formless evil, found by Luna, who let it corrupt her and make her negative emotions more intense. Even after it's banished from Luna, it keeps the Nightmare Moon entity and her goal.

Actually, luna was supposed to have been imprisoned permanently, and her time was obviously 1000 years exactly. The time sombra spent in his prison was either approximate, or she meant over 1000 years, or its just an even number to make things easy.

Yeah I'm with Argumedies about the crazy theories. . However, I appreciate the effort and creativity! Just keep my Luna out of it!

 

I also agree with the general theory that Sombra's 1000 years is a approximate date. It almost doesn't matter because it seems the writers were not jazed by how he turned out and don't expect to bring him back.
