Moderation suggestion

Recommended Posts

In my opinion, all of the moderators should be global moderators - but with different focuses. This way, there would be more people who would be online to deal with any emergencies.

All of the current section moderators would continue to focus on whatever section they were assigned. Their focus would be proactively moderating their individual sections, but they would be able to moderate anywhere if the need arose. All of the current global moderators would keep their focus (if they have one), but focus more on the reactive side of moderation: handling reports. Therefore, both the proactive and reactive sides of moderation would be covered simultaneously, while everyone would be able to moderate anywhere if the need arose.

This way, no one's job really changes, but there would be eight more people who would be able to moderate anywhere on the site if an emergency ever arose, which would make the site more safe. It would also simplify the staff system further.

I think this is how moderators get assigned, in order to get decent time zone and section coverage. It's always been like this.

It is not an explicit system, but it is there, and somewhat implied.

Firstly, Globals have always had a distinction of being one of two settings: 'Roaming', where they have no specified section they focus on, and 'Focused', where they have one section they focus on. Most of our current mods who focus as globals are Focused. As for your suggestion, Sectional-focused mods and Globally-focused mods actually have fairly different jobs contrary to popular belief, so this isn't as simple of a 'no brainer' to implement as one might think.

The fact is, Global mods are expected to deal with a lot of aspects of the forum outside forum topics and members. They deal with everything from blogs to status updates, and all the things in between. While they are capable of, and are encouraged to help the Sectional-focused mods with the forums themselves of course, as, like I said, many of our Globals are focused mods who have one forum section they hover around more than others (usually due to their activity in that forum on a regular basis), their other responsibilities come first, because the Section Mods don't deal with those things, because they're expected to be the primary guardians of the forum sections, themselves.

This is the system we've been attempting to switch to :3 Before now, the difference between Global and Sectional was more along the lines of 'one has more responsibilities' over non-forums, but we've now made it more clear that Globals should spend much of their time on assisting the admins with statuses, blogs and other non-topic related entities.

In short, your suggestion would go against what we've established now a fair bit, and would almost be a step backwards. The differentiation we've tried to make would go back to 'everymod deals with forum sections, on top of everything else'. While this may work in other places, we've decided to go with what we've moved onto, now.

As far as 'taking measures to keep the forums safe' goes, there's nothing to worry about. We have seven admins, thirteen mods, nine+ Poniverse Staff (that number will only increase) who work with the normal mod team as eyes and ears, and an active member base who are not only active themselves, but who report things on a regular basis in case we somehow miss something. Nothing's getting through. Nothing really ever has :3

* It's worth remembering that many, MANY of the staff have a personal preference of remaining invisible. Christ, 3/4ths of the administration is always invisible. Just because you can't see us, doesn't mean we aren't there, being active to keep everypony safe from the morons across the internet ^^

To illustrate this point a bit, consider that there are presently five hidden users online at this moment with forum-wide moderation privileges.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I forgot the whole thing about globals having to deal with non-forum stuff when I made this post.

It's good to hear that there's plenty of staff to keep the site safe. :)
