Minecraft Server

As you may or may not know, I used to host a Minecraft server for my other forum, TheWiiU.com, letting Minecraft run with the resources my server had to spare. But since I launched MLP Forums, those resources got a little tight, to the point where Minecraft managed to crash the entire server and all the sites on it a few days ago.

The solution is a server upgrade, which would result in ample RAM for Minecraft's use, but it'll cost an extra $30 month. Only one member of TheWiiU.com is able to donate, so I wanted to ask if anyone here would be interested in sharing a Minecraft world with a group of Wii U fans, and putting some of MLP Forums' donation money towards it.

Please let me know how you would feel about this. The upgraded server would be more or less entirely reliant on donations - if donations stop coming in for it, it'll simply mean no more Minecraft.

While I do love Minecraft.

And I would love a private Minecraft server to play on as opposed to free open server, which can be quite irritative at times.

I don't think I would be willing to make regular payments in order for the server to be sustained.

I'd much rather make a donation towards the upkeep and improvement of this forum!

In any case, I do appreciate the offer though.

I don't know how sustainable that would be, to be honest. While a decent chunk of change was gathered from donations over a short stretch of time, it isn't very indicative of what the donation situation will look like over the long(er) term.

Currently there are six people marked as being donors; how many more people will offer donations? Further, how many people that have already donated will donate again? Of those, how many would be interested in Minecraft? At this point I think it's too early in the game to be able to have a good idea as to the answer to any of the above questions. Additionally, another issue I could see creeping up is how much people would be willing to commit to a server that could easily go up or down any given month due to insufficient donations; extended down times during donation dry spells would likely turn a lot of people off.

Then there's always the issues of server settings, creative vs survival, plugin choice, player restrictions, etc.

I wouldn't mind throwing down a few blocks with you lot, but I don't think I can really get behind the whole thing at the moment. I think the best course of action would be to hold the thought and give it further consideration later down the line when the community has grown and there's a clearer idea of what the donation landscape over a long term is going to look like.

Bukkit?

Multiverse?

How will protection work?

Economy?

Of course it'll run Bukkit. For protection, I'll use LogBlock and WorldGuard. Don't know about multiverse and economy.

I did have two ops in charge of running the Minecraft server while it was still up - they're the ones that would really be making these decisions.

It wouldn't be a free open server - it would be a private whitelist-only server shared between my two forums. I do understand that relying on a regular stream of donations could get clunky and is a bad idea in general, and I really don't want people who have absolutely no interest in Minecraft to have their money going towards it.

But that's why I asked. :)

All great points, Zoop. In all honesty, I don't want to start outright relying on donations for anything just yet. As I said in my reply to Swoop, I'm just asking for an opinion right now. I do want us to have a Minecraft server eventually at some point down the line, but ideally, I'd be in the financial position to be able to support it myself and keep the donations for the actual MLP Forums - that's the only real way to ensure it'll always be available.

The wall of text was probably a bit overboard, truthfully.

Well, Bukkit isn't really mods. They are plugins

Pretty sure you know what I mean =)

I am just interested in which permissions PLUG IN would be used.

...I don't play minecraft, so my opinion really won't count for much.

But from what I've seen my brother play of it, I think it'd be OK to share a server with the Wii U folk.

Wouldn't it just be the most fun to have a war between the Bronies and WiiU-ies? I may consider setting up an account (or whatever Minecraft uses) for this.

But what do I know? I'm just a stupid kid.

I'm liking this idea. I would build a fortified death trap and call it "Fluttershy's humble cottage of DIE".

This would be pretty sweet. I'd be willing to donate once, but not over and over again. (I'm also still trying to convince my mother into letting me donate to this forum. I hate not having my own creditcard...)

If we do eventually do this, I'd be on quite a lot. I haven't played Minecraft ion a while because Single player gets a bit boring, but if this happens I'll for sure help out!

And war with the WiiU people? I'm okay with this!

Why are you dragging your cursor over my signature? Is there a problem here? Do you maybe expect something special? Honestly, that's kind of creepy. Are you trying to get as much information about me as possible? Maybe you're going to copy and paste this into onto your little collage or all things Lyra? (me, not the awesome BG pony...) You seriously have issues dude... I pity you.

I'm sure I'll get hated on for asking this, but would it be available for those with pirated versions of minecraft? My friend admins a pirate server, but it runs a lot of annoying plugins and stuff that really change the gameplay. I like my minecraft vanilla, or at least mostly vanilla.

And I'd be totally down with a war :)

I think there are some pirate versions that have all the abilities of a paid for version.

If you can get your pirated version to connect to the server, there's no stopping you from participating. But I do not endorse the use of pirated software, and the server will be running in "online mode" (meaning that it checks your local copy of Minecraft to see if it's legit). You'll be using it at your own risk, and will also look bad in your fellow players' eyes for it.

Please, I strongly urge you to buy the real thing. Support Notch and Mojang for their work - it's not like they don't deserve $20 for their work.

It's not that I don't want to pay for it, it's that I have a very limited income (read: none) and there are things I need to pay for first, like gas. I haven't bought a game in a while (except when I saw Odin sphere in perfect condition at a garage sale for $2). I do plan to buy minecraft at some point in the near future.

Also, the pirated copy I use simply bypasses the login screen, so I wouldn't be able to connect. I don't think there are any pirated clients that can join a legit server.

Small update here: thanks to a very generous donation by Jonke, I was able to get the server upgraded to a better one with twice the CPU power and RAM, so running Minecraft should no longer be a problem. When 1.0 comes out in a couple of weeks, we'll use Multiverse to share the same Minecraft instance between both of my forums. Look for an announcement with more details then.

I've set this topic to lock itself in 24 hours, seeing as we won't be spending MLP Forums donation money on the server after all.

Before this locks: If you got it up and running, whats the ip?

azuras.feld0.com.

Currently it's still the old map/server with no plugins installed. As Feld0 said. We will have a new fresh map with a lot of new features. For both WiiU Forums and MLP Forum members. More info about this soon.

PS. the server still requires you to be whitelisted.

Enter my server's hostname, azuras.feld0.com, into Minecraft's IP address field, and contact N Harmonia to get yourself whitelisted.

Keep in mind that the world you see there will be wiped when 1.0 hits in a couple of weeks. However, I do plan to distribute a copy of the world file to everyone that played on there when that happens.
