Gardenia stared at the offered hoof for a bit. She didn't want to seem rude, but she really didn't want to touch his hoof. Instead she managed to get up on her own. "Um, thank you, but I can stand. Sorry." Gardenia looked around at the other ponies assembled, concerned that they were not exactly who she expected. 

 

Gardenia figured that they were all probably concerned as to the legitimacy of this call, so she said to them all "I can guarantee you that this is no joke or elaborate prank, Celestia wouldn't do that. But other than that, I have no clue why we are all gathered."

"Well, I hope that we get this party started soon" said Ginger Snap as he fastened his bow tie. Celestia walked out and looked down at the 6 ponies.

 

Celestia: Hello my little ponies, dark times fall over us with the alliance between Chrysalis and Discord, but I have a solution. I shall start by declassifying the document for you.

 

Dear [Your name here],

 

    You have been selected for the [N.E.W] program by Celestia and Luna themselves. An uneasy and deadly alliance has been formed between the Changeling Queen Chrysalis, and the embodiment of chaos himself Discord. They plan to take Equestria by storm and take out the princesses. You have been hoof chosen by means of [Close watching since you all where children] because we know you will succeed in your journey. The six ponies who wield the 'Element's of Harmony' are all MIA. Meet us in the Canterlot royal garden by sun rise tomorrow.

Scribe re-read the letter, which had somehow changed since that morning. Elements missing, he had figured that much. No, the real question...

 

"So you just pick out six ponies to... do what exactly? Go find them? Go beat Discord and Chrysalis with sticks?" He cocked his head slightly to the side. "I mean I'm in, but what do you need? Isn't this something that the royal guard is more suited for?"

 

He paused for a moment before suddenly remembering who he was addressing. His bright crimson blush was plainly clear through his light grey coat as he hastily added "... your highness."

Firebolt also opened her letter. It had indeed changed. Not for the better, either. She sighed, and closed her eyes. Even if the Princess was... exactly that, did she really think this cleared up anything? N.E.W? What did that even mean? Not to mention, the idea of being watched by the royals since she was a foal... scared her and embarrassed her at the same time. 

 

She hadn't even noticed where the Princesses had come from. She was still leaning on the bush. Not the best image.

 

"So you just pick out six ponies to... do what exactly? Go find them? Go beat Discord and Chrysalis with sticks?" He cocked his head slightly to the side. "I mean I'm in, but what do you need? Isn't this something that the royal guard is more suited for?" .... "... your highness."

 

Firebolt nodded. "He's right." She began in a somewhat quiet tone. This was all happening too fast for her taste. "Surely some guard ponies would be better at taking down such monsters like Discord and Chrysalis... right?"

Princess Celestia bowed to show that she was listening as Princess Luna started to respond.

 

Princess Luna: The choice of you six ponies was thought through very carefully. Each of you have something special about you, and you will show it on your journey. All of you have something special relating you to a certain element. The elements are scattered around the entire world, but there is one we kept in our care to give out now.

 

Ginger Snap bowed and tipped his tricorn hat to the two Princesses before asking

 

"Ah, pardon me your highness, but you said that you have been watching us since we were kids. Also, if you don't mind me asking what is the element that has been left in your care." 

 

Ginger Snap looked around the room nervously and awaited the Princess's answer.

 

Princess Luna: It is the element of laughter, Ginger Snap.

 

Ginger Snap paused and tried to process the information that had just been spoken before hastily replying back "Why the 'Element of Laughter', and why me?"

 

Princess Luna: Growing up you seemed to love being the center of attention, and could lead your followers well. You also had the humor to keep those under you in line and be respected. You can be extremely loyal to a cause if given enough reason, and I believe that you would be the perfect candidate to lead this group through the upcoming events. Now please. Bow.

 

"I-I" choked Ginger Snap before bowing his neck

"I would be honored" said Ginger Snap proudly.

 

Princess Luna: Good

Luna then used her magic to levitate the element around Ginger Snap's neck.

Firebolt hushed herself at the words of the Princesses. She was one of the "new" elements of harmony? WHAT!? How did that even make sense? If memory serves, last time she checked the elements were Laughter, Generosity, Loyalty, Honesty, Kindness, and... one other she couldn't quite remember. Not much happened in Baltimare, certainly nothing like this.

 

But what element could she be? Honesty? Certainly not. Firebolt knew she lied far too much. Laughter was taken. Loyalty? Maybe, but she wasn't really that loyal of a pony. Generosity? Ponies said she was generous, sure, but she really wasn't that generous. Surely there were better ponies for that. Kindness? Oh heck no...

 

Firebolt looked at the Princesses with a confused expression. "So, you know what each element each pony has? Can you tell us?"

Anarchy had calmed down significantly when the princesses had entered. He was at a loss for words and kept his head down. When he finally found his voice he reiterated on what Fire bolt had said. "I... yea that would be nice to know, I guess." He could tell every pony, especially Scribe and Gardenia, were shocked at his calmed state.

Firebolt gasped aloud, then quickly covered her mouth with her hoof. "Uhm... you sure about that... your highness?" She tried to ask, as politely as possible. Then she looked over the other ponies again, but didn't register any of their facial expressions. Most ponies would be honoured at this event, but Firebolt wasn't sure she could meet the expectations of the Princesses, and other elements...

Princess Celestia then bowed and awaited further questions. Ginger Snap coughed before replying

 

"Don't doubt yourself Firebolt, Celestia made a very excellent choice. She was not just being 'generous' " said Ginger Snap chuckling a bit before continuing "... but seriously I believe you can do it, all you have to do it believe in yourself." He then gave her a quick tap on the shoulder awaiting her response.

Scribe simply stood, mouth slightly open with a dumbstruck look on his face. All airs and graces forgotten.

"What." He said in a deadpan tone as what the moon princess had said sunk in. Words had failed him. Again.

An Element of Harmony? No... No, there had been a mistake. Anyway, what about the other Elements? The REAL Elements if Harmony? Were they just expected to forget about them? He didn't know most of them well but...

Firebolt turned to Ginger. She looked a bit dazed, but quickly said "Thank you." . It seemed like all the assertion her voice once held had gone the same way her confidence had. Gone. For now, anyway. No matter what anypony said, she knew the wrong choice just had to have been made. She certainly did not need the honour, that came with being an element.

  Peachy Keen was dumbstruck when Celestia herself entered the garden. She had assumed it would be a representative of the ruling sisters, not Celestia herself. Her mouth dropped, and she barely registered it when the bringer of the sun mentioned the declassification of their letters. She noticed the others opening theirs, however, and so jumped to the conclusion that she should retrieve hers and look through it. "Project N.E.W.?" muttered the mare to herself, attempting to make sense of all this. She was simultaneously frightened and honored by the thought of being watched since childhood by those of such important standing, though was still at a loss when it came to how they were supposed to assist in the fight against two incredibly powerful creatures like Discord and Chrysalis.

 

 Celestia's sister appeared, seemingly from nowhere, which startled Peachy Keen, though not any more than some of the other events that had gone on since she arrived in the courtyard. "Now, any questions?" asked the younger alicorn, her eyes darting between the six ponies assembled before her. Scribe Shield piped up, asking the question that was on everyone's mind. "So you just pick out six ponies to... do what exactly? Go find them? Go beat Discord and Chrysalis with sticks? I mean I'm in, but what do you need? Isn't this something that the royal guard is more suited for?" questioned the stallion. Firebolt chimed in as well, voicing her agreement with Scribe Shield. "The choice of you six ponies was thought through very carefully. Each of you have something special about you, and you will show it on your journey. All of you have something special relating you to a certain element. The elements are scattered around the entire world, but there is one we kept in our care to give out now," answered Luna. Peachy Keen felt even more out of her element that before. She... an Element of Harmony? How could that be? Which could she be? Generosity, maybe? Unlikely. Certainly not honesty. Perhaps Kindness? Loyalty?

 

 Luckily, Peachy Keen didn't gave to answer that question herself as Ginger Snap piped in, asking which Element they had kept. Luna revealed it as the Element of Laughter, and, funnily enough, revealed its bearer as Ginger Snap himself. Luna explained the decision, explained how Ginger Snap would be the leader of the group, and gave the Element to its chosen bearer. Peachy Keen, however, was still left without a designated Element, and she couldn't help but feel that this was all too surreal to be true. Firebolt and Anarchy both soon asked for their respective Elements, a question which was surely in everyone's minds that day. "Element of Laughter would be Ginger Snap, the Element of Magic would happen to be Anarchy, the Element of Generosity is Firebolt," began Luna, starting with those who asked for the answers. "Peachy Keen is the Element of Kindess," she continued, surprising the mare. "Me... Kindness...?" whispered Peachy Keen, still in a state of shock over the knowledge that she was an Element in the first place. Luna continued, unaware of the bearer of Kindness' confusion, saying, "The Element of Honesty is Gardenia, and the Element of Loyalty belongs to the stallion Scribeshield."

 

   Peachy Keen heard conversation around her. It sounded like Firebolt and Scribe Shield were voicing their disbelief, and Ginger Snap was reassuring them. She was too busy reeling over what she had heard herself to care, however. How could she be an Element of Harmony? She, of all ponies? Certainly there were others better suited for the role; kinder, gentler souls who would be much better suited to the task. Peachy Keens' thoughts were interrupted as Celestia spoke in reply to something Scribe Shield had said, her oddly calming tone snapping the mare out of her stupor. "It seems as if you are questioning my judgement, but I digress.  You have to realize that this had been a group effort from the entire N.E.W team, not just me. You just need to have faith in yourself because the journey ahead will prepare you more than anything else can. I guarantee it." Oh. Right. A journey. Forgot about that, thought Peachy Keen to herself. And the Elements of Harmony... missing, spread across the planet... "Oh dear," said the pony aloud as she put two and two together. "Uh... Princess? What, exactly, is this journey you and the note mentioned?"

"Where do we start? Do we have a... a map or a magical compass or... or... something?"

'Find the Elements of Harmony?' He thought to himself. 'Yeah... We're doomed.'

Firebolt nodded in agreement. "It would be quite... tedious to wander around the whole world without a single clue of where the elements could be! We might pass over them!" Firebolt was surprised at the assertiveness in her voice. She lowered her whole body position to seem a bit less... angry.

Princess Celestia calmly closed her eyes and levitated a saddle bag in front of Ginger Snap.

Princess Celestia: Take it, it contains a non enchanted compass for navigation, and a map to show the locations of the Elements. 

 

Ginger Snap looked around nervously before grabbing the saddle bag and saying "I accept this honor hereby decreed upon me this fine day." Ginger Snap laughed as he put on the leather saddle bag. "Thank you for the information Celestia" said Ginger Snap bowing

Princess Celestia: Your are indeed welcome my little ponies, the fate of Equestria, and maybe the world rests in your hooves.

Uh... your Highness?" Anarchy thought it was weird that she would have a map of the elements yet get other ponies to get them for her. Several members of the team weren't even pegasi, so they would have to walk. It didn't add up...

  Peachy Keen expected this, though she still didn't like it. She had traveled before, yes, but nothing on a scale such as this. And how could they hope to find something as small as one of the Elements when they didn't even know where to search? "Where do we start? Do we have a... a map or a magical compass or... or... something?" asked Scribe Shield. Peachy Keen nodded, wanting answer to that question as well. "It would be quite... tedious to wander around the whole world without a single clue of where the elements could be! We might pass over them!" added Firebolt, a bit more aggressively than Scribe Shield. In response, Celestia levitated a saddle bag towards the six ponies assembled before her.

 

 "Take it, it contains a non enchanted compass for navigation, and a map to show the locations of the Elements," said the Princess to Ginger Snap, her chosen leader. The pegasus looked taken aback, though he quickly grabbed it from the air. "I accept this honor hereby decreed upon me this fine day," said the stallion, giggling a bit. Peachy Keen was surprised that somepony was able to laugh at a time like this, though she supposed that was why he was the Element of Laughter. "Thank you for the information Celestia," he said, regaining his composure.  "You are indeed welcome my little ponies, the fate of Equestria, and maybe the world rests in your hooves," replied the Princess. Peachy Keen desperately wanted to see the map, to know where she would be headed. She knew she had to wait, however, and instead resigned herself to wondering about its contents. "Wait I have a question," said Anarchy, seemingly unable to contain himself. "And this isn't meant to be rude in anyway but... if you know where they are, why can't you get them? Uh... your Highness?" he asked. Peachy Keen nodded. "I understand the desire to create a friendship between us, Princess, but isn't this a very urgent matter? Do we have time to seek them out ourselves?" said the mare, joining Anarchy in his questioning.

Anarchy reeled back at Luna's words. "Yes Princess, sorry princess." Although Anarchy was rowdy and immature at times, he always respected elders and authority figures. His rowdiness slowly started seeping back and he looked at the rest of the group. "Well we should probably get going now shouldn't we?"

Princess Luna: Enough! You just need to trust us! If we just got them and retrieved them for you they wouldn't even work. The journey will enable you to work together in perfect harmony and use the elements. Basically if you don't retrieve them yourselves you can't use them. 

Firebolt gave an audible squeak, then bit her tongue. Luckily, didn't have to say anything else, as Anarchy brought up what was on her mind.

 

"Well we should probably get going now shouldn't we?"

Firebolt nodded, in agreement. "I agree." She said, quietly. "Unless there's anything else you need to tell us... your highnesses..." As much as Firebolt tried to respect all figures of authorities, these were really trying her patience. She needed to get out of here. She would have prefered just going home. But, she'd definitely put protecting Equestria before her own desires.

"Yeah, time's wasting." Scribe said, turning to the Pony holding the map. "Snap, wasn't it? Want to take a look at that map, see where the first stop is?" He smirked a little. "Let me take a wild guess, a warm beach to the South, as far from danger as we can get?"

 

He quickly glanced around at the group again: a couple were looking nervous now that the enormity of the situation had hit home but none of them had backed down yet, which was a good sign. Maybe they weren't as doomed as he might have thought.
