'A pony like Rainbow Dash' - is she a different sub-species?

When talking about the Sonic Rainboom, Fluttershy says something that has always stuck out in my mine. She says:

 

"When a pegasus like Rainbow Dash..."

 

"LIKE rainbow dash..." and I don't think she is actually referring to Dashie as a pegasus but actually as a sub-species or the like. Could it mean that the Rainboom is something that only a Rainbow-Maned pony can accomplish? After seeing Dashie's father with the same mane type, it can be safe to assume that she can actually be another ethnic type of Pegasus....like a much more rare genetic coding like an albino human...

Actually it was Pinkie who said that, not Fluttershy lol. And she meant somepony who IS A PEGASUS like Rainbow Dash. I wouldn't overthink these things if i were you

i really think you are overthinking this. i mean, everybody takes over some genetics from their parents. rainbow got the mane colour. that doesn't emediately make her diffrent from other pegasi. she only accomplished the rainboom by breaking a (somewhet simmilar to) soundbarrier. i think anypony can do that if they break the soundbarrier

okay, so if she does mean a whole pegasus sub species by this, how come only rainbow dash is the only regular rainbow maned pony in the show? there would be way more if they where a entire sub species

She is like an Albino. Do you know how rare albino humans are? VERY. There are ponies similiar to Dashie who have different colors in their mane, but she is a super rare type.

I'm pretty sure that Rainbow Dash is not a different sub species, maybe this is just a joke. I'm pretty sure, that it was a figure of speech or sarcasm.

OR it may just very well be that the other rainbow maned ponies are elsewhere in the show and not seen. Remember, we only get a limited viewpoint at certain times and places of Ponyville. Judging by this photo:

It may or may not be Rainbow's dad/brother/uncle/relative but there's at least some other rainbow maned pegasi. Also consider the fact that at times we see very few stallions. There lack thereof doesn't necessarily mean they're rare, but perhaps that they are elsewhere at the time. The same goes for the bison and perhaps even alicorns, for whom all we know may have a large population somewhere.

The point is not for us to disprove your theory, but for you to prove your theory to us. One statement by Pinkie Pie with multiple interpretations is not going to be enough to convince anyone. Well, me at least. I also feel you are reading too much into it.

I think the word "like" in that phrase is being used interchangably with "such as". I dont think there are any sub species of pegasus

I'm pretty sure that she was just using Rainbow Dash as an example of a pegasus, rather than implying that Rainbow Dash is part of some other category of pegasus that is able to pull off the Rainboom. My headcanon is that the Rainboom isn't necessarily exclusive to ponies with rainbow manes (although there isn't really anything to support it).

 

Alternatively, she could have just been setting Dashie apart as somebody who is able to accomplish awesome/borderline impossible things

I am an Agent of Chaos. I need naught to prove anything to mere ponies! My prerogative is to find entertainment in the little things such as this! And we all know Pinkie knows more than she lets on. She knows the rarity of Dashie's species! But as in the Parasprite Episode, no one listens to her.

I think Pinkie just meant that RD is just a really awesome pegasus. I mean if you think about it alot of ponies and pegasi hold RD in high regard. (I'm looking at you Scootaloo ). So I don't think she's a subspecies.

I highly doubt it, by that same argument you could just as easily say that Twilight was a different subspecies before her big promotion due to the fact that she was far more skilled in magic than most unicorns. Rainbow Dash had is able to pull off stunts like the Sonic Rainboom through a combination of natural talent, a fair amount of luck and a lot of hard work and training.

She may be a rare breed of rainbow pegusi.  Bifrost (yes, that IS his name) is the only pony that looks anything like Rainbow Dash.  It could be that only ponies of that breed are anywhere near fast enough to preform the Sonic Rainboom.

Bravo! This pony gets the whole purpose of the discussion. This, my little pony, is a good way of thinking. She may not be a different species but a different specific breed! Well said! Let us dissect this possibility a bit more shall we? There are many pegasai who look normal but then we do have those with multi colored manes...so breeding is a possibility

I think it has to do with her being a different breed perhaps, as you'll notice in the "Wondebolts Academy" episode Lightning Dust Also has her own trail  that matches her mane and tail, much like how Rainbow Dash has a rainbow trail.. Maybe she is of a similar breed?

 

or it's probably just because of the speed they were going...that you could see a trail behind them. Maybe in the Pony Universe, when a Pegasus reaches the sound barrier and breaks it, it causes a disruption and causes a spectrum of colors to appear in the sky.
