Shining Armor/Cadence in love = clueless Twily

I don't think we've ever been given a good reason why Twilight didn't know Shining Armor was dating let alone engaged to Cadence. I remember that Twily nailed SA the second she saw him but I don't remember his reply. Now one can blame Queen Chrysalis's spell but I have problem with that as a total explanation. For the moment I'm assuming Twilight has been in Ponyville for 3-4 years (the length of the show) and we know she and SA and presumably Cadence were all living in Canterlot. If SA and Cadence were dating Twilight would know. I'm also assuming that with ponies, as with humans, an engagement is a big deal and generally acknowledged. The real Cadence knew she was getting married so this implies that quickly after getting engaged Queen Chrysalis kidnaps her and takes control of Shining Armor. However none of this explains why Twilight didn't know they were even dating. Obviously the writers didn't think of this or feel a need to explain but it's a glaring omission. Thoughts?

well, i think they didn't go in dept on this because it needs to be fun to watch for kids too. if you start to have long dialogues on marriage and planning of the act, then it wouldn't be very interesting to watch for the younger audiences.

however, i do feel that there is indeed a lack of explanaition here. 

maybe canterlot is further away from ponyville then everybody thinks?

Clearly blaming the Big D (Demographic) is likely the answer for many of the things we talk endlessly about, but if we use that as an excuse we'd have nothing to do here; at least for those of us who only like show discussion.

I'm not sure if distance is the answer. I can't think of a good cannon reason either.

well, we also don't know how long they have been dating. and i just realized distance wasn't a good argument to begin with, i mean, in the song BBBF the mane six are laying on a hill and have a good view on canterlot castle. it is pretty far away tough, but a view nontheless.

so well, i can't really think of a logical reason here... i'll be sure to let you know once i figure something out tough

Well with something as big as a wedding with a princess who runs a kingdom in the capital of a kingdom, while being drained of love and probably brainwashed by a changeling as well as protecting an entire city; Shining was probably too stressed to even think about about contacting Twilight.

Good answers all and anyone could be correct. It would just be nice to have an offical reason. The true reasons are likely Big D and the writers but those answers are always unsatisfying.

Due to the fact Hasbro made and put in Cadence and Shining Armor at the last second it's hard to imagine why,

 

The only thing I can think is that they were dating in secret unbeknownst to Twilight whether before or after she left Canterlot. At some point after Shining Armor proposed to Cadence and a few days before the wedding; Chrysalis kidnapped Cadence, took her appearance and started draining Shining Armor.

 

I can only assume Cadence was trapped in the caves for about a two or three days as terrible as she looked.

I remember seeing that one of the upcoming comics is about Shining Armor asking out Cadance back in high school. Which I'm assuming is many years earlier, seeing as how Shining was already captain of the guard at the point they got married. So if you accept the comic as canon, it's not easy to explain.

Yeah at this point we may never know, but since the writers brought it up as a plot point it be nice to know the answer. I'm guessing if you asked them they would say Queen Chrysalis was the cause, which might be true if you don't go beyond what we see in the show. But I'm a pesky Brony and won't accept simple. The writers could go the Disney Channel rout of them being friends that were always in love, but never realized it.  That would make it likely that they would marry quickly, but still doesn't explain why they wouldn't share this news with Twilight.

I don't think that Twilight was aware of Cadence proposing to Shining Armor until, Shining Armor reminded Twilight of who she is. The funny thing is, Cadence and Shining Armor were put in at the last second so the theory of those two dating each other when Twilight left Canterlot to go to Ponyville is still in question.
