Actual text shorteners?

Mars Caramel

You know how people often use spoiler tags to shorten their large amounts of text? I was hoping we could have a separate tag for that purpose. I'm suggesting this because I only recently got confused and viewed a "spoiler" that was actually a spoiler for something. Okay, the spoiler didn't actually have any effect on me, but I'm worried that other people might get confused.

Spoiler tags are useful, but we could probably use some proper "shortener" tags which could work the exact way as spoiler tags, so people won't get confused.

Doesn't sound like something that'd be too difficult to implement, in fact, I'd like to expand on this.

What if there were custom spoiler tags? What if you could make a spoiler tag that had your own text for the button? For example, instead of saying "Spoiler" on the button, it could say "I WROTE SOMETHING" on the spoiler button. I don't imagine this would be too difficult to make unless it was hard-coded into IPS beyond belief. You could add a parameter as follows.

[spoiler="LOOK A THING"] your spoiler content here [/spoiler]

Or...

[spoiler "LOOK A THING"] your spoiler content here [/spoiler]

Up for debate of course. What do you think of that Mars?

I like Marcato's proposed solution to the issue that you have raised, Mars. I don't feel that this is a pressing issue, because context would most likely determine the content of text within a spoiler in most circumstances, but it would still be a nice feature to have.

Marcato's idea sounds great. I've seen it used elsewhere, and it works. In addition to that, though, what about a censor bar-style spoiler that you have to highlight or mouse over? It could be used more for humor than for actual spoilers, and could be used to supplement the spoiler labels. I think that should mostly eliminate spoiler confusion, and add a new dimension to forum conversations.

I suppose that you are talking about something like this?

[background=color] text [/background]
WARNING hover over this for a spoiler

[background=color][acronym='text']spoiler tag[/acronym][/background]

Both of those things can quite easily be done by simple BBCodes. Though, it would of course be much more simple if there was a button for it.

Huh, when did you quote me. But yeah, something like that. A censor bar that reveals text on mouse over (can't believe I'm saying this, but what 4chan has) would also be nice.

@@Jokuc,

Great, I thought that I was the only one to know about acronyms since nopony goes to special BB codes. :|  Thanks for making me feel not special. just a joke

What TS said is pretty good...despite the fact it's on 4Chan...eh, I support this idea.

You gotta pay attention to your notifications Twilight..  ._.

But hm, this would make it a bit too easy to reveal the hidden message by mistake and see what's in it.
