I honestly think making a single character the punching bag is the single worst/most misused trope there is.

It's just that I'm tired of this trope. Meg Griffin, Squidward, and Spike, enough is enough. The trope looks to me like a "get out of jail free" card for when the writers don't like or cannot develop a character.

 

Charlie Brown was probably the only one who did that trope right. At least he still had heart and optimism even when everyone around him was taking a dump on him, and it wasn't because the writers were mean to him or hated him. They wanted to make him a lovable, relatable underdog.
