So I have a plan for finishing the upgrades to my PC. Because I'm still getting some terrible frame drops in most of my games and I'm sure my R9 290 is like "bro I'm not even out of first gear yet." So it's going to be a CPU/Mobo swap. 

 

I'm talking about going to an i7-4790K and a Z97 mobo for some overclocks

 

I'm officially done with AMD CPUs. They have awesome GPUs, but FX is terrible.

Daring actually asked me what it's like having a 4 gigabyte frame buffer and I had to say I don't know. Because I am so bottlenecked that I cannot use it all. The most I've used on this thing is roughly 2.5 gigabytes and my CPU is seriously struggling. I'll OC when this new fan comes in, but I think I'm about ready to make the switch to Intel.

Yeah, pretty sad AMD isn't really competitive in the CPU side anymore.

 

But then again, there's Zen, coming in 2016, which is pretty much their last hope as a CPU manufacturer, but that's still a year from now, so we still don't know if it will definitely be neck and neck with Intel's Skylate...

If worst comes to worst, I'll sell the Intel if Zen is really just that good. I hope AMD is doing pretty well for themselves since the consoles seem to be selling pretty well. Even if the Wii U isn't quite selling what Nintendo had hoped for. 

 

Of course, you can't expect something so underpowered and named so weirdly to sell well. Nintendo really needs to fire its marketing team. They just don't know how to name things anymore.

I do think the fate of consoles is up in the air, though. I don't know that anyone really wants to stay in it. Console gamers simply want too much bang for their buck. They want the hardware we have on PC, but they don't want to pay that premium. 

 

Well I've got news for that whiny breed of console gamers (because not all of them are that way). You get what you pay for. If you don't want to drop a grand on a piece of gaming tech, don't expect it to perform like a piece of gaming tech that does cost a grand. It's like buying a Chevy Cruze and expecting it to perform like a Corvette without having to pay for it. So the console manufacturers are fighting a battle they cannot win. They cannot impress PC gamers because we have the best hardware and we're willing to pay what it takes to have that hardware. They cannot please their own fanbases (at least, the educated people within them) because they want a lot and only want to pay a little. It's going to be interesting to see where that market goes. But I don't think console gaming is going to be around much longer. It's getting to be too much like PC gaming anyway. 

 

There was a time when you put the game into your system and it just worked. The age of the internet and patches has all but killed that convenience. I don't know that consoles are still going to be around by 2025. I'm don't even think Sony and Microsoft will even make a 9th gen console. Besides, what are they going to do that the PC won't already have done?

Really, though. Consoles had advantage on PC prior to the seventh gen. You just put your game in your console, hit the power, and hit Start. No 15 gigs of updates to download. If you're on decent internet, you can deal with it. If you're on Filly's internet, you don't have time for that crap! So at this point, I think the only way consoles can stay alive is to come up with new ways to interact with a game. I like that about Nintendo. They're coming up with new ways to interact with your game. They invented shoulder buttons, had a 3 prong controller that was best for people with 3 hands, was the first to try their hand at motion control gaming, and now they have a tablet for a controller. I think we've reached that point in time, though, where that is the only way PCs and consoles will remain different. 

 

I'll eat my words if I have to, but I don't expect them to be around another ten years. I think even Nintendo will be out of the home market by then. Maybe they'll remain competitive in the mobile market, but not in home consoles.
