So apparently a new Pokemon/Tekken like fighting game is going to be released in the future. A teaser was shown at the Pokemon Game Show in japan. Any thoughts? The titles, "Pokken Fighters" and "Pokken Tournament" have been trademarked her in the states.

Looks interesting. Is Namco making it? I know Game Freak isn't. I also wonder if the game will have a big roster or will they start small. Also, dibs on Magikarp. :P

I think this is something we all silently wanted.  There are fan-made pieces like Pokemon character for M.U.G.E.N, and there was also Street Fighter-styled game that was in production over in Japan (fan-made as well).  To have an official game like this is virtually a dream come true, but there is one problem; not all of us can afford consoles these days.   -_-  It's a shame.  I would have loved to play as Lucario in a game other than Super Smash Bros.

It's all speculation for now.  What I would really want is a sequel for pokemon xd Gale of darkness.  There isn't any other spin-off that I liked as much as this one.  And to think Battle Revolution was supposed to be a pokemon shadow game :\

I agree, since the early 2000s, i've been waiting for Pokemon Stadium 3 or something of that sort. We got colosseum, XD Gale, and PBR which I think was ok, but you couldn't really enjoy PBR if you didn't have any of the handheld games. Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2 were awesome and with Gen 6 around the corner, I wish they'd make one.

As for Pokken, could be anything right now, some people are saying it was a promotion for the TCG since it has the fighting symbol in the background.

Congratulations guys, this is a thing!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7Cs4L1JALY

Released earlier today on Pokemon's official YouTube channel.

Not much is known about it, though. Just that it's being made by the people behind Tekken, it'll be released in Japanese arcades in 2015, and that Lucario and Machamp are confirmed.

I can't wait to see how this develops. For once, a Pokemon game I might be bad at.  :P

Indeed.

Aaaah! I've never been this excited about a spin-off of a Pokémon game! :D

Seriously, the Fighting type is my favourite type and I always like to play fighting games from time to time, so I'll be getting this game once it gets released on a home console. :P

I would be disappointed if there is no Mienshao or Sawk, however... :P

The people behind Tekken AND SoulCaliber.

But honestly, if they're taking these kind of measures to keep Pokemon alive, then they're running out of options with the Pokemon world. I hate to say it, I really do, but at some point, they're going to run out of ideas. It doesn't sound like its that far away, but then again I've been surprised in the past by what Pokemon has done. Who knows?

Edit: Has anyone else noticed the proposed name looks quite a bit like Tekken. Think about it: Tekken, Pokken. Isn't that enough of a Tekken plug?

This looks seriously awesome. I hope it's not just a new Tekken game with a few Pokemon added in. Also, it said opening in Arcades in 2015. Does that mean we won't be able to buy a physical copy on a system?

I disagree that they're running out of ideas. If the Pokémon franchise has games that many fans love, a successful anime, an ongoing manga series, selling out toys, held live concerts and a trading card series, then the series is far from dying. It could live another ten years, even. :P

A fightin' game for the Fightin' Pokémon? It really exists? :o

Oh man, it looks super good! Smash Bros. can't entirely be all Pokémon after all, so the fact that Nintendo is making another fighting game to help contain them is really good news. It should certainly come to the west and Wii U eventually, cannot wait. :D

You do realize the franchise is nearly 20 years old as it is, right? There's only so many creatures that can be created. There's only so many times that the format can be reused. It's grown stale, with the anime, with the games, with just about everything. It's way past its peak, and there's only so much that can be done with it. It's reaching that limit. Unless there's some radical shakedown and a major overhaul is done, it's very slowly dying. You can only extend something so far.

Look, I used to be a fan of it for years. I still have a working Game Boy color and my original copy of Yellow. I remember how it used to be, how revolutionary it was. I have played every single generation of the game, I have untold amounts of the cards, and I used to watch the anime. I began seeing the repeating patterns, the ones that signal the ideas are running thin. When it started to become the same year after year, series after series, game after game, I gave up. I lost interest. It's getting to that point where, and as much as I hate to admit it, I think it needs to be killed while it still has some sort of respect and dignity. At the rate they're going with it, it's going to be bled dry.

I beg to differ. Ever since it's started, Pokemon's been getting bigger and better pretty consistently. Most Pokemon fans like the series now more than ever. I myself think that X and Y were some of the greatest things they've ever made, and the new Pokemon that came with them were even more inventive than previous generations (including Klefki. That thing actually is pretty good). Besides, every main series game has a new storyline to it that keeps things fresh while retaining the same basic skeleton. These games have a ton of new things every time a new one comes out, and they've even been known to change old things, too. Pokemon may be old, but it's certainly not dying.

To me, these spin-offs are a sign of that. It's not that they're running out of ideas, they're just trying new things. Think about this for a moment. Between Mystery Dungeon, Trozei, Ranger, and now Pokken, how many of them play similarly to the main series? These games are all radically different, and try to do radically different things. Even Colosseum and XD, the spin-offs that most closely resemble the main series, are so different that it's hard to compare.

Think of it this way: think of the Mario games. You've got your standard Mario Worlds and Mario Lands and junk, but you've also got Mario Kart, Mario Party, all sorts of Mario sports games, and all the characters from Mario games that have gotten spin-off games/ series. Pokemon's doing the same thing. It's just branching out. Trying new things. Trying to remain faithful to the source while deviating from it enough to only resemble it in name and characters. Pokemon is not a game, or even a series. It's a franchise. And a strong one at that.

It's not dying. It's maturing.

The show, though...

Completely different story.

I agree. There's another series that is still going strong even over 20 years later without too many overhauls. Magic: The Gathering hasn't had too many major overhauls but it's still going strong and has no signs of dying. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

But this thread should stay on topic and talk about the Pokkén Fighters game itself.

A damn shame that we will.never get to play it, seeing as it's only gonna be released.in Japan in arcade cabinets.

/Hoen was the last great generation. Everything after that was...Well...c'mon, an ice cream pokemon? :okiedokielokie:

Actually, I've heard that the name "Pokken" has been trademarked in the US and EU. If that's true, we're definitely getting it, just later than Japan.

I for one think Vanillite is pretty adorable, and I can say from experience that Vanilluxe is a force to be reckoned with.

Anyway, back on topic. :P

I honestly hope this isn't limited to just Fighting types. I mean, there's a lot of Pokemon that would be interesting to see in this game. Alakazam, Greninja, Golurk, and Bisharp come to mind immediately, but there are tons that could work. And boss Mewtwo, anyone?  ;)
