Time Travel Is Possible But Only to the Future

We may be able to book our ticket to the future someday -- it'll just be a one-way trip.

In a presentation at the British Science Festival, particle physicist Brian Cox said that time travel is possible but only in one direction.

"The central question is, can you build a time machine? The answer is yes, you can go into the future," the University of Manchester professor told the audience during his hour-long speech on Tuesday, according to The Telegraph. "You've got almost total freedom of movement in the future."

Cox detailed how time travel to the future is possible under Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity. Traveling hundreds, or even thousands of years into the future, could be accomplished if someone was traveling at an incredibly fast pace, close to the speed of light.

Discovery News equated the theory to the so-called "Twin Paradox:"

Imagine twins, one stays on Earth (Twin A) while the other (Twin  B) boards a spaceship and flies off at relativistic speeds. Compared with Twin A’s timeframe, Twin B’s timeframe will slow. If time is running slower for Twin B, then he/she will return to Earth where a lot more time has passed and Twin A has aged significantly more than Twin B. The mechanism behind this is “time dilation” and it has a stronger effect as you travel closer and closer to the speed of light.
Coming back from the future or traveling to another point in the past is much less likely, according to Cox.

Relating his theory to the popular British science fiction show "Doctor Who," Cox explained that the time-traveling Doctor would need to find a wormhole in order to return to the past. The theoretical bridge, or shortcut through space-time, proposed under Einstein's general-relativity theory has never been proven to exist. And, even if a wormhole were discovered or created, there's no telling whether humans could actually use it to travel through time.

Cox isn't the only one to theorize that a wormhole could allow time-travelers to travel backward in time. Earlier this year, astrophysicist Eric W. Davis of the EarthTech International Institute for Advanced Studies said that a wormhole would be the best option for back-in-time travel. But, Davis acknowledged, it would "take a Herculean effort to turn a wormhole into a time machine."

I remember reading a theory about this a little while back, or maybe I heard it on the radio... Can't remember which. Anyway, the theory ran that time travel won't be possible until the time we create the first time machine, that's why we aren't surrounded with time travellers. It would also mean that time travel could only go forward for us.

I kind of think of it like a stargate, you could only travel to a point where another "time gate" is.

Although I honestly hope we never discover time travel. It would be disastrous.

I personally do believe that time moves forward in only a single direction, but it has been proven that the rate of that movement can be altered. I don't see what the big deal is though, if you want a one-way ticket to the future it would be much more feasible to invest in cryogenics.

Fictional Realism is possible with theory of alternate universes which introducing but Max Tegmark and Brian Greene. That theory which has influenced the popular culture and entertainment industry as much as time travel theory.

Sorry to a little too far from the article but which i was trying to say, if we are able to travel to the alternate universes so time travel is mathematically possible. You can find worm holes, black holes or traveling faster than light in order to time travelling but to travel alternate universes, time travel technology is required.

Fictional Realism is the far more impossible and hardest to explain. Because it talks about the theory in which our imagination can advertly create another worlds. It means that EQUESTRIA exists somewhere far beyond the omniverse!!!

I have a theory in which is more advancing that can able to travel space-time. Between the omniverse, there are pathways of space-time running like a stormy river. If we can find somehow to travel faster than the speed of light and break the wall of reality in order to reach that pathway of Space-Time Continuum so we can travel time!

Some advantages beside traveling time, it can spontaneously travel space! We can  travel across the omniverse in order to find our desired universe in order to observe the civilizations which in those different dimensional universes. Your thread just suggests me of an idea to explain how can we do something more advanced than space-time traveling but about "Fictional space-time traveling"

Isn't that cool to visit Equestria someday??

Very interesting indeed.

It's been awhile since I've pondered on the concept of time travel, but I am familiar with all you're trying to explain here. I couldn't agree more with ya. x)

Here's another thing I've thought of. What if the past doesn't even exist?

What if we are forever stuck in the present/future time?

"Dsanders, that's crazy talk! "  :o

"No it is not random voice. Give me proof that the past exists."

"That's easy! The past is all in history, books, artifacts, documents, photos, inventions, all of everything mankind has ever created. Plus every past moment we personally experience lies within our memories."

"What if none of that existed?"

" ............."

In the most basic and simplistic kind of quantum physics, because time itself ceaselessly moves in only a forward motion, it's logical to say that the past forever vanishes as it is continually replaced by the present existence of time. We do have obvious evidence that our past was in fact, the past, but if you were to hypothetically take all possible evidence away, where's the proof?

The proof mainly lies within human memory. Without that, we wouldn't know where the hell anything existing around us came from.

Time is forward. It is always forward and never backwards.

I think time, in it's most simplistic and fluid form, is a continuous cycle. The future eventually meets the present which immediately becomes the past, which is then immediately gone, only to survive in our own memories and the legacies we make of it.

It's like when the memory on your hard drive eventually get's full and so you'll either want to erase everything on there, or get an whole new one.

That's just my perspective though.

Going forward in time is incredibly easy. To go forward a decade, wait about 10 years.  ;)

First off, time is an abstract concept used to represent the linear progression of events. To go back to the 80's, get a calendar from the 80's, to go back 10 minutes, set your watch back 10 minutes. Will the events that happened and the results of those events change? No, but you have gone back in time.Time merely a means of marking the rate at which events occur, and because events occur at different rates at significantly velocities, it is possible to "time travel". I would like to propose that if someone was to time travel by moving very close to light speed, they would exist on the same timeline as everybody else, they would just experience it differently. Because time is abstract, experience is what counts.

It is indeed possible.

I watched a show on the Discovery channel......there are 3 main ways that it's possible.

1- Wormholes

Worm holes can exist anywhere at anytime, but they are tiny.....in order for us o use them as time travel we would have to find one stabilize it and enlarge it enough for a person to walk through....but the problem with this is it creates a paradox....and it's highly unknown what happens if a paradox were to happen, wormhoels are also highly unstable.. So Wormholes are to be avoided.

2- Blackholes

if we were able to build a spaceship that was able to keep orbit and fly around a black hole, at top speed it'd be jumping.5 times into the future....meaning for every 5 years they're circling that black hole...10 years will have passed on Earth. This is because time slows down near black holes. This is highly improbably, as the nearest blackhole is light years away. And we don't have the technology to get there, yet.

3- A train

This seems like the most probably solution. we would have to build a train around the entire equator.....Though in order ofr it to be an effective time machine...it would have to travel around the Earth's equator once every 7 seconds, or 7 times every second (or something like that, I forget the actual numbers)But again, we don't have the technology. But Time would almost be at a stand still on the train as it circled the earth. 1 week on the train would be about 10-20 years if I remember.

That is no new information, the "relativity (time dilation via fast speeds) = seems like time travel" theory is known since decades. If I'd get the chance, I would take the "one way ticket" because I have few to loose here but hope all will get better in the future.

Alex, Alex! You're walking away from history! History! Did Chris Columbus say he wanted to stay home? No! What if the Wright Brothers thought that only birds should fly? And did Galoka think that the Yulus were too ugly to save? -- Centauri to Alex Rogan; "The Last Starfighter" (1984)

Wait. Theoretically:

If I have this right that the closer to the speed of light you are, the more forward in time you go, faster. Then that would mean if were to stop moving through the universe (somehow stop out solar system from moving) would that mean time would freeze/stop? I mean we are constantly moving through space, the whole galaxy we're in spins constantly, and compared to the earth spinning, it could be spinning at a few light-years speed. Perhaps if we were to stop it, time would stop? Or perhaps if we were to just slow it down, time would be slower.

I don't know, I'm not a particle physicist, it's just a theory :P

I do not think Wormholes make you got back to the past, Sorry to the people who do

Even if they did then it would be very hard to find a wormhole bigger then a person and most wormholes are the size of cells :/

(I did not read a lot of it i just saw the wormhole bit)

If wormholes supposedly don't exist how would you know how big they are?

I personally think they do exist. I think they sometimes get created when a star goes Supernova, and the remnants attempt to making a new star or perhaps some other kinda shit and instead makes a wormhole. In which case wormholes are huge o.o

Well yes you are right about i don't really know what size wormholes are because i am no scientist right now but i have just saying what I heard stephen hawking said, He said wormholes are very small so

And it's up to you but i don't think a supernova makes wormholes

But you never know ;)

  • 7 years later...

I remember learning that in IB Physics in high school. It was the end of the year and my teacher was running out of things to teach from the curriculum, so he brought up that topic one day. It is theoretically possible to jump forward in time, but we have no way of moving a human at sufficient speeds, so it remains science fiction. Still pretty cool, though.

Kinda cursed, imagine a reaper situation occurs and instead of going forward 1000 years you end at a civilization thousands of years in the past.

Futurama had an excellent episode about it.

Too early in the morning for me to go into Special Relativity. Seriously, my mind is not up to speed with time travel other than I know you can age differently if you travel by light speed, not to bring all the black hole paradoxes into this discussion.
