Never2muchpinkie 211 November 3, 2013 Share November 3, 2013 Well, I just saw a user with a profile pic of Celestia sleeping on her back in the shade of a tree, and it suddenly got me wondering. Having their hair still going when they're sleeping seems like it would be very amusing to watch but it wouldn't be very practical.
UserNotFound 964 November 3, 2013 Share November 3, 2013 Hmm... I never really thought about that... Maybe like breathing it still flows... just slower... I don't recall ever seeing them sleep... which would be interesting to see... Interesting thought! .

I don't recall ever seeing them sleep... which would be interesting to see... Interesting thought! I know. The more I think about it the more funny it becomes. Maybe when they sleep their 'living' mane rearranges their stuff within reach to mess with their heads. That would be a pretty hilarious subject for a fanfic. Wayvy 34 November 3, 2013 Share November 3, 2013 Hahaha I really like the question Never thought about that. I think it probably floats again, and if they are probably used to it anyway. Hmm... I never really thought about that... Maybe like breathing it still flows... just slower... I don't recall ever seeing them sleep... which would be interesting to see... Interesting thought! I lke the breathing analogy. I think it's probably closest to the truth. When I imagine them sleeping and their tail and mane floating, it looks natural. Lunas Husband 2,777 November 3, 2013 Share November 3, 2013 For the look of things.. maybe... hard to say. but I think so, its kind of like why would it stop, its not like when we go to sleep are hair just go's "Oh he/she is a sleep we can stop growing guys!" but I could be very wrong.. anyway good idea.. "Does not matter what they say, my sweet love! I love you! and always will." ~Princess Luna
FNGRpony 658 November 3, 2013 Share November 3, 2013 Pff of course they do, why else do you think the taxes are so high?(heh sorry). I don't think it's a concentration thing. I do think if they got drained of their power it would shut off, like how luna showed up after being nmm and her hair was normal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvTYhrZUgYY flight to the finish. i continue to improve,
Scootalove 10,689 November 3, 2013 Share November 3, 2013 Their manes still flow while they are sleeping, since they probably never stop even when they are awake or not. Maybe when they are sleeping, their manes flow slower than usual. Credit: Moony © Forum FAQ Forum Rules
Denim&Venöm 19,795 November 4, 2013 Share November 4, 2013 (edited) Do the princesses even need sleep? We've never seen them sleeping or even if they have beds? Does being an Alacorn mean you no longer require sleep? Is it possible that the reason Twilight falls asleep still is purely out of habit, rather than necessity? And how do their manes float like that to begin with. Do they possess so much magic that they can now defy gravity? Do their manes follow atmospheric pressure changes or float towards the magnetic polls on a windless day? Are their manes charged the same as the rest of earths magnetic field and as such, are repelled by it, keeping it afloat? Are their manes not manes at all but an extension of their bodies with their own blood supply, and they are being consciously moved about by the princesses like a tail? How different is the princess physiology compared to other ponies or even Cadence and Twi? So many questions! Aniki 386 November 4, 2013 Share November 4, 2013 The first fan-made movie where I saw one of the princesses sleeping... looks legit enough for me. It would be kind of weird if their hair just... "turned off" when they slept. 1 ~Signature by my awesome sibling @Armchair Adventurer "Som"~
Hive King 2,001 November 4, 2013 Share November 4, 2013 No, I doubt it. Notice how when Chrysalis knocks out Celestia, her mane stops flowing. Granted, one could argue that unconsciousness is different from sleep, but the principle is the same 1 "Aren’t we the same? You know, aren’t you carrying the same mindset as I am? ReverieRiver 526 November 4, 2013 Share November 4, 2013 I like to think that this effect on their hair is a subconscious flow of magic through the strands of hair, thus turning them the way they look. As something to support my theory, take a look at this: When Cadence and Shining Armor touch horns and their spell of love begins, Cadence's mane begins to flow just like Luna's and Celestia's manes. It must be the powerful magic, being channeled through her. Maybe it's just for aesthetic effect, I don't know, but I like to think it's the magic. So, I don't think Celestia and Luna's manes would simply stop flowing when they sleep. The magic that makes their manes ethereal is a subconscious thing to them. When Celestia's mane stopped flowing after being defeated by Chrysalis, well, Celestia's magic seemed to have been exhausted following the struggle. The answer is always magic.
NavelColt 22,883 November 4, 2013 Share November 4, 2013 I think it even more amusing to think about what happens to it in the shower. How do you even shower, bro? Pip showed us by tugging Luna's mane that they can be touched, they're not just magical mist, but that just answers doors to new questions such as, how water resistant are those manes? Do they absorb water or repel it? Does water sink through from one side to the other, or is it solid enough to keep water from going through at all? Wat bout' soap, mang? As far as sleeping goes, I'd love to see a canon bed-mane version of those things.

lomk 20,665 November 4, 2013 Share November 4, 2013 Whether or not it's practical, it's still freaking cool. I would love hair that's always like slightly drifting in the breeze. But maybe they have muscles in their mane that move their mane? I guess that's how they keep their slim figures haha But I would love to have a real life Luna to pet on while her starry mane flows I refuse to let go until you're impressed. I refuse to let go until I'm depressed.

As far as sleeping goes, I'd love to see a canon bed-mane version of those things. I like to think that their manes are still comprised of actual hair; just that said hair is enchanted to 'flow' the way it does. So, I would think that their manes could get wet like any other manes. The flowing strands of hair would get wet and be weighed down, though perhaps they may still try to continue flowing. So, I suppose the princesses' manes could still be washed like any other mane. Also, I would be thoroughly amused if they were to show a nice, messy princess bed-mane in the show.
Sweet Dreams 1,893 November 4, 2013 Share November 4, 2013 I think their manes would still flow. It'd be kinda weird for them to just turn off when they're sleeping, don't you think? That would suggest that they were making them flow like that. *suspicious face*

Friend, you get a gold star Right now, I'm just imagining what Rainbow Dash's mane would look like if she got her hooves on this shampoo. The sad thing is the rainbow factory...yeah that's just a cover up. It's really Celestia's royal shampoo factory. They also make glue there. But she told me to stay hush hush about that. Rinkitty 589 November 4, 2013 Share November 4, 2013 (edited) ...This is actually a topic? Oh my... My guess is that Celestia and Luna use a special conditioner to make their hair all wavy, and it only lasts a certain amount of time. Theory inspired by this picture. Inactive01 5,299 November 4, 2013 Share November 4, 2013 This sounds like a very interesting question... I never considered it. Hmm... If it were the case that Celestia's hair continued to move in waves, then it would be a very uncomfortable sleep for her that's for sure. Just imagine your hair moving about freely while you're sleeping. With that in mind, I think Celestia and Luna can control their manes so that it doesn't move so they can have some comforting sleep.
