skylights 127 December 15, 2013 Share December 15, 2013 It occurred to me today that Princess Celestia is a dictator. And not only is she a dictator, but she's an immortal dictator. She's been the iron-hoofed ruler of Equestria for over a thousand years, and will remain as such for the foreseeable future. Suppose she had to be removed from power. Perhaps the Nightmare forces that corrupted Princess Luna somehow manage to turn Celestia? Or maybe everypony simply decide they want Equestria to become an anarcho-syndicalist commune. Maybe they just don't like how the Cadence-Crysalis affair was handled. Whatever the reasons, our Princess is ousted. Now, in the case of Equestria, Celestia has been their benevolent dictator for hundreds of generations. Nopony has the slightest clue what life is like under anypony else. Would she simply step aside if the ponies demanded it? Do you think there are already policies and procedures in place for something like this? Equestria does not appear to have a parliament or high council or anything of that sort - for all intents and purposes, Celestia's will is the law. Would she oppose the formation of a governing body that would challenge her primacy? And suppose she were successfully ousted without a bloody coup. Would she continue to maintain her duties as the pony who raises and sets the sun? Would we discover that it has been an elaborate act all along, and simply requires a spell that any unicorn can perform? Do you have any thoughts? Scootalove 10,689 December 15, 2013 Share December 15, 2013 Since dictators would never let a rebellion or anyone who challenges their authority, she would find ways to get rid of the rebellion of ponies that want her out of power. As for a way to remove her from power, Celestia would have to be dead or she decided to willingly give up her power. Malinter 3,064 December 15, 2013 Share December 15, 2013 (edited) If she is a dictator then why the hell does she attend "Royal Summits"? I do think Equestria has a goverment or council of some sort, even if it was created solely in the event she were to somewhow be captured or fall. That said. The Royal Guard shat themselves rather quickly to be honest. Without Twilight being their what would they have actually done? Doctor XFizzle 8,670 December 16, 2013 Share December 16, 2013 There must be a way for her to sacrifice her immortality and thus be able to pass on. Knowing how benevolent she is, if there is a lapse in her ruling or if an up-and-coming leader emerges (like Twilight) I can see her and Luna relinquishing their immortality and letting a new leader take over. zev_zev The outcast 415 December 16, 2013 Share December 16, 2013 You think that Celestia is dictator??? YES! I knew that I was not the only one who thinks so. Well, I can't imagine that she voluntarily remove her powers, dictators always were followed only by way of a bloody coup. I doubt that such an outcome is even possible in Equestria (thank God). By the way, about Gods: Celestia is a smth like God I think. Who can dares to go against PonyGod? PonyKratos? xD Chaos Lord like Discord? Well it's possible. (here is my theory about Chaos and Harmony, and much more http://mlpforums.com/topic/82186-the-creator-of-everything-or-the-primal-chaos-theory/) Guys, no one thought that Celestia uses Twilight for their selfish purposes? Don't get me wrong, I'm not Celestia hater, but it's all very suspicious. I have a feeling that Celestia planning something...
Nature's Spell 526 December 16, 2013 Share December 16, 2013 (edited) Celestia is nothing to Lord Hasbro and Queen Meghan. What they decide is what government the ponies will live under. Princess's rule and President's drool. I would guess that each community has a mayor and perhaps they are part of a national council. Without Celestia and Luna, once again, the Unicorns would have to handle moving the sun and moon. You have to wonder why they would have given up that power. Interesting question. My point is if Celestia handled things well for 1000 years I'm not sure if democracy would add much. Heck some may think it ads little to our world given the state of certain governments. Dddrgn 450 December 16, 2013 Share December 16, 2013 Hmm... interesting question. I honestly think that there is some sort of elected council that helps to lead the country, rather than Celestia's will being law - this is a topic not really discussed within the show. If she was to be taken out of power, I feel like it would have to be done diplomatically. "You must never give in to despair. Shanks 10,816 December 16, 2013 Share December 16, 2013 At the absolute worst Celestia could be said to be a benevolent dictator which is almost nonexistent but has happened once or twice throughout history but I don't think this accurately describes her either. Yes she does have a lot of power much more than a typical president/prime minister but uses her power in ways most monarchs do not. Most rulers use their power to keep their subjects in line, put down any potential rivals or threats to their power and actively makes moves to expand their own power while Celestia's priority first and foremost is her subjects. I think she sees her job not as some divine right or entitlement but more of as a public service which runs completely contrary to the goals and actions of a dictator. 2 Rarity Get's Cockroaches

No on in the royal guard even thought "say...... my common sense it tingeling, the only thing between me and complete rule is that book reading retard, hmmm" Maybe celestail drugs her guards. There wasn't a single pony guard of rank who had any dreams of granduer. for a split second. DubWolf 17,459 December 17, 2013 Share December 17, 2013 Ehh... isn't this a monarchy? (then again, what exactly are the differences of a monarchy and a dictatorship besides # of people ruling). A dictator has a negative connotation of being a terrible leader whose people suffer greatly, which isn't the case for Equestria, so why would anypony question her as a terrible leader and ask her to step down? As for the nightmare moon corruption on Princess Celestia, I would find it difficult to take her down considering she has the strength of the sun (but not the strength to take down a changeling, looololol). Maybe the elements of harmony could be of assistance? Sig by Wolf, Handwriting by SparklingSwirls
Metemponychosis 1,262 December 17, 2013 Share December 17, 2013 It's because of things like this bronies would never be allowed to live in Equestria. XD Why would she step aside? Can you find a pony that is better than she is at her job? Until there is some canon information about this stuff I just assume Celestia is there because of two things: ponies love her (in general) and no one can do her job better than she can. I mean, we don't even know if she is immortal, if Equestria has any sort of government body that resembles anything we know of, or even if moving the sun requires one unicorn two, or two thousand of them. In fact we know so little of her that I wouldn't be surprised if it was said in one episode that Celestia doesn't need to go to the bathroom and can survive on eating cake alone. Anyway... Rising to leadership in Equestria is completely different than it is in our world. It's not about blood and it's not about democracy. It's an ascension thing that don't seem to be plausible of being faked. Ponies follow the alicorns and trust them to make the right decisions and know how to solve problems. And I think that's beautiful. 1 https://www.fimfiction.net/user/32864/Metemponychosis For dumb, self-important fics about mythology, ponies and fascist griffons that can't figure friendship out. ALIS 38 December 17, 2013 Share December 17, 2013 So Trixie gets her hooves on the Alicorn Amulet which of course imbues her with great power but makes her need to control everything. She makes the ponies of Ponyville build statues and hang banners and call her pleasing names, which is basically Celestia's daily life. Luna felt that not enough ponies loved her like they do Celestia so she went nutso like Trixie. Celestia is loved enough that she has yet to go insane... That we know of.Moral of the story. Show the appropriate amount of inferiority to your Alicorn tinged with complete unconditional respect or they will totally kill you.

Side Bird 566 December 17, 2013 Share December 17, 2013 Well Celestia isn't really a dictator... Considering the fact theres now three other princess's. Celestias word isn't really law, because Luna, or maybe Twilight, could deny it. Dictators are also usually mean, who keep strict rule. Celestia is kind and fair. If however she was to turn evil, the elements could banish her like she did with Luna. She's not a dictator, the ponies have their own government system. Celestia has been ruling for a long time yes, only because she was the only Alicorn around, and Alicorn seem to be the ruling class.
