Okay, apparently somepony's OC was in Pinkie Apple Pie and they all freaked out.  I don't get it.  First of all, I never saw this character in the episode:

That's Slendermane and apparently he was in the episode somewhere, but I couldn't spot him.  Not like he would be easy to miss.

Actually the character is from a 4chan thread contest to create a new horror monster and he has never been confirmed to kill his victims. There have been several games, animations and stories based upon him though.

......

really?

I assumed slender main was a pony fied version of slender man from mine craft.

Come on people.

Slender Man led to Minecraft's parody of Slenderman, the Minecraft version didn't come first. Likewise, this MLP easter egg is also based off the original legend.

The above people have mentioned who he is, so I'll explain where to find him.

In the scene where Pinkie and Applejack are coming off the cart, and Pinkie rolls off onto Applejack, with a forest in the background, slendermane is in the break in the forest in the middle of Pinkie's roll.

Here's a video of it:

I get it, but at the same time, I don't. I know Slenderman's a very popular legend, but why reference something that's A.) so macabre in a kids' show, regardless of whether or not kids will even see / understand the ref; B.) kind of old and tired by this point? I appreciate that the animators wanted to do something cool for the adult audience, but honestly, I can't think of a single person above the age of 12 who still finds Slenderman scary / interesting / relevant. The legend of Slenderman is kind of passé any way you slice it, so I'm kind of wishing they'd slipped in something a little more current.

But hey, at least the animators do still care about the interests of the adult fanbase, so I ain't gonna look a gift horse in the mouth.

Well you also have to consider that the show is animated months prior. Chances are these episodes were finished over 8 months before they were even released. So that kind of means any reference they place in the show will always be slightly outdated, since internet memes kind of fade out of style in 2-3 months these days. Slender had kind of been kept alive with all the ridiculous fanmade content though.

As far as it being macabre; to be honest, they never actually say in the mythos that Slender kills anyone. Just that they "disappear". We don't know the nature of his killing abilities, or if he kills at all. In fact, the mythos in some aspects says he instead turns children into proxies to bring him more children. We don't really know what he does beyond that. I do agree though that Slender isn't really that scary, and I think that is why they included him; he's more or less a "joke" monster so it's not really that "offensive" to have him portrayed. It's a way of giving a minor nod to older fans while not upsetting the balance of younger fans because they won't know what it is. I will admit though that Slender has succeeded in becoming recognized off the internet though, which is hard for internet memes. My 43 year old co-worker at work knows what it is.
