Forum Users and Humor

Why do so many people on this forum lack a sense humor. It's like everyone has to take everything so seriously. Like last night, I was on this thread (which was supposed to be humorous) and a lot of some people were acting too serious about. And the funny thing is, a moderator closed the thread because people were joking around and was labeled "spam". C'mon, really? People can't just have a little fun. Here's the thread if anyone wants to see:

There's another forum I go on (I won't say the name for publicity reasons), and everyone, and yes, everyone, jokes around and have a funny sense of humor. I just want to know why this forum can't be like that too.

People need to make it clear when they are joking otherwise they can offend people. Each forum attracts different kind of people, so long as they are following the rules, let them do as they please.

I think there can be joke around comments and threads etc, but there is an issue with no facial expressions or tones of voice or anything like that only text.

So I think it can be harder for people to know when people are joking or not

This. Anyways, I have noticed this forum is a tad more serious than other ones I've been on before. Though that's not to say that we can't be completely random, and have a great time here.

We are just more organized I guess, we have sections for all different kinds of topics. If you want to joke around, we have places for it.

Not sure completely. Honestly, as far as the topic of spam goes, what is and isn't considered spam is to be determined by the Administrators and Moderators of the forum. That's just the way the world works I suppose. The rules are determined by those in a position of power, and the rest of us have to obey them and enjoy what we have to work with.

That thread had no conversation past poor jokes, and as a result seemed to be more a Forum-games oriented type of thing. Since it wasn't even about the show anymore, it had no reason to be in the Show Discussion section.

Plenty of people are funny on here, but that was becoming off-topic spam. I would have done the same.

Could've just been shoved to the Lounge like many joke threads, but one of the draws of a forum is decent topics and discussions. That's why one of the rules here is to make quality posts, and loads of the replies in that thread don't qualify.. Humor is great, and I don't think the atmosphere here is overbearing in trying to force people to be serious. If people want to just joke around and post spammier replies, that's what the Cloudsdale forum and status updates are for. However, if you're seeing those kinds of replies in other, on-topic sections, that is a problem.

This place is full of hilarious people and I've never really felt like the atmosphere of these forums is oppressive or restrictive of fun. To the contrary, really. Just know the time and places to make spammier replies that don't contribute to the discussion.

People here can have fun, but there are some that can take it far to fool around to the point where it's too much for even the moderators to handle.

I don't mind them entirely, but order must be restored and in place for the forums to continue.

I just don't see a problem in a little bit of humor, even in an on-topic thread. Yes, I know that if it comes down to immature replies like "PENIS PENIS PENIS" it should be handled, but the spam replies on the thread I posted was harmless... kinda. Still, it wasn't necessary for it to be shut down.

I just want to see people on this forum lighten up a bit instead of serious and gloomy. It makes me kinda sad to see someone who's actually like that.

Well, I'm known to be really joyful on other forums/communities. I don't know here tho.

Everyone will have a different sense of humor, some tends to be more negative than postitive; it's the same everywhere! If there is a forum where there is no buffoons, it will be quite boring eh? But we also need moar serious people, so it won't end up like the newgrounds forums.

Also, it would be misplaced to make a somehow racist joke on the debate section, while we can joke as much as we want on cloudsdale colosseum.

I tend to play with words a lot. I actually laugh at my own signature. :)

It's probably due to Poe's Law. Some of those threads may be obvious jokes to you, but when you've been on the internet as long as me(I'm 21 and I've been active online since I was like 13-14) it get's hard to tell because you learn really quick that there's people legitimately that stupid lurking around the web.

On this site alone, we've had people that are honest-to-God really that stupid drop by and make insane threads and posts.

What this guy said. This guy knows what's happenin'.

There's a time and a place and a specific forum section(s) for screwing around. When I want to post somewhere serious, I expect to be surrounded by knowledgeable people who want to carry out an intelligent and positive discussion.

Maybe I should go to the Cloudsdale thing. I never even been on there, so I'll try it out.

As for carrying out arguements with knowledgable people, Twiliscael, that's cool and all, but to me, those are either boring or gets me pissed off easily, being a Christian on the internet and everything. Seriously though, I find myself in religious and political arguements all the time, and not once was I happy about it. But everyone has their opinions, so who am I to judge? :)

And another thing, the name of this thread changed. Is that normal?

humor is my middle name

Doctor Humor XFizzlestein

and people have humor and fun here, its just contained in a different area so it doesn't completely detract and derail from the main discussion. There's been tons of spontaneous fads and memes, although less now than there used to be.

I have to admit, I'm moderator on a forum elsewhere, and ended up taking a decision a bit like that. Here's my logic;

They're called "threads" or "topics" for a reason - all the posts in there are about a particular thing. It structures discussion, prevents flooding (since one rule is that you shouldn't duplicate threads) and in a lot of ways makes a discussion area feel a lot safer for new members not sure of where to go or what to do.

Admittedly, when one person posts something incredibly low-content, like "Butts. Teehee" - even if that post is kind of funny, there's a very good reason to either lock or remove it - the rules have to apply the same to everyone. Imagine if EVERY new member posted one of those, each thinking their contribution was funny - and it wasn't. Would you just remove posts en masse? Would you actually PUNISH each of them, simply for their joke not being funny? (Many feel that simply having their voices stifled is punishment!) Leaving it all around isn't an option as it's been the main reason for valued members leaving forums before.

An analogy goes out to graffiti in cities. Some graffiti artists are actually *superb*. They treat it like an actual art, and put dedication into their work, even knowing that they'll be arrested if they're found. Honestly, the kind of person I'm referring to does better work than a lot of city-commisioned murals.

But the problem is - the rules have to apply to everyone. 99% of those artists feel they're being oh-so-unique by spraying "SLAY-R" with a bit of outline on it...500 times along the wall of the train tunnel. Overall, that's going to ruin the appearance of the whole city to make it look like a shadowy gangster neighborhood. You can't just make a rule such as "You may NOT spray graffiti on walls!.....Unless you're really good at it." Heck, how do you think the good graffiti artists learn their craft? Practice!
