gaming Nintendo third party.

In order to stay competitive Nintendo will have no choice but to get more 3rd party support, 3rd party support along with excellent first party titles has made Nintendo a very successful company in the past and has helped them win the console wars in the 90's (although that was also partly due to some poor business decisions on Sega's part) and there is no reason why they couldn't repeat this success once again. Nintendo has plenty of great choices for the 3D's but has some serious catching up to do with the Wii U, it has a one year head start on the Xbox One and Playstation 4 but should still have more games under their belt than they do now. The Wii U is not as powerful as the Xbox One or the Playstation 4 but does not suffer from as much of a gap in power as the Wii did with the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 if anything this current console generation in terms of graphics and sound has made the least change of any console generation in history. Because of this and the fact that the Wii U also utilizes traditional controls as well as the touchpad control and Wii remote Nintendo third party developers will not have as much trouble developing good ports for the Wii U as they did for the Wii.

The pros are that they wouldn't lose so much money on consoles that people find to be under rated.

The biggest con is that that would be the sign that they are going strait downhill like sega. That and they would lose their biggest demographic and have to appeal to the people that play the playstation and xbox. As they mostly play games that are first person shooters, they would have to change their market strategy to get those people.

I feel like eventually the game market is going to crash and Nintendo will almost be forced to go third party. Both Sony and Nintendo aren't doing too well. It scares me because I despise microsoft and I would hate to see them go third party. Though, going third party may be the best option if a company wants to still make video games but avoid going bankrupt. Sega went third party and they are doing much better than when they were making consoles.

I hate it when people say phone games (Apple and Android) are the future for video games.

Atari isn't doing well. They filed for bankruptcy last year.

From a purely financial standpoint... no. While the immediate numbers say yes, I think this is more of a slump.

As a developer of their own platform, they sort of have this niche market for themselves set up. Nintendo almost is expected to produce some well-developed first party titles for the system and the quality of those games is very much a big deal. Should they go third party, I don't think they would have nearly that same amount of pressure to ensure they design their games well. Take a look at what happened to poor old sonic over the years.

Their handheld market should stay stable I think. While phone games are on the rise (which blows my mind, most are utter garbage!), I don't think there are many people out there left without a smartphone. So long as Nintendo continues to produce good portable games to offset the garbage, I think they should continue to be profitable in that market.

They may do both.  Continue to do consoles, maybe make cheaper consoles then the others, hold into the handheld market & maybe make some games for ios & android.   Maybe small mini games sorts of things.

Oh god. Flappy Bird. I'm so glad that was removed from the app store. Why do people get addicted to games of that Quality. I'm pretty sure it was also removed for the creator to keep his cash but avoid lawsuits from Nintendo. I kind of agree with you, but Nintendo should focus more on the wii U. There are no memorable games for it so far, and Nintendo may be focusing a 'bit' too much on 3ds.

Just curious. Have you played Super Mario 3D World? That was very memorable.

Isn't that more of a party game? My appologies: I meant single player games. I am the only one in my family that likes video games so I ignore party games.

No. It's a 3D platformer that it is a bit of a cross between Super Mario Bros. 2 (US version), Super Mario 3D Land, and Super Mario World. One of the highest rated games of last year and pretty close to being the best Mario game ever made.

Hmm. I might try it then. The ads made it seem like a party game.

It is four players so maybe that's where you got the impression from. The multiplayer is a blast. Good for experienced gamers and beginners alike. Better than the multiplayer in the New Super Mario Bros. games.

The only footage of it I saw was from that one ad with the four kids playing it. Looking at the other advertisements I can see that it wasn't what I thought it was. Nevertheless, I think Nintendo should make more games like this for the wii U. The 3ds already has a huge library of first party games.

I agree whole heartedly and I think that's would be their best next move. I'm banking on smash bros U having the same affect as Pokemon X and Y had for the 3DS in terms of console sales. The big issue is the number of games for their console, but I have hopes that this will be a non-problem in the coming year.

(I know it will be for me at any rate :P)

Well, this year they have Yarn Yoshi, X, Fire Emblem x Shin Megami Tensei, Super Smash Bros., Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Hyrule Warriors, Sonic Boom, Mario Kart 8, a new Miyamoto IP, and Bayonetta 2. And those are just the announced ones. Coupled with Wii Sports Club, Wii Party U, New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, Nintendoland, The Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, The Wonderful 101, ZombiU, Pikmin 3, NES Remix, Sonic Lost World, and Mario & Sonic At The Winter Olympics, there will be a lot going on for the Wii U.

I've had mine since last March and haven't been bored with it at all. I enjoyed getting the 30 cent classic NES and SNES games and Earthbound especially. It has been a great purchase.

Did you say Shin Megami Tensei? Oh man! Now I'm pumped! I now have something to look forward to. SMT X Fire Emblem, Mario kart 8, Sonic Boom, and Super mario 3d world will probably be the next games I get. I currently have Ninja Gaiden, ZombiU, and Sonic lost world (Which has an amazing Yoshi's island DLC btw).

How likely is it, in your opinion, that this is Nintendo's last console?

Highly unlikely. Nintendo merged their handheld and console divisions so it is likely their next console will be a hybrid device.

Nintendo is also working on a new "third pillar" platform relating to health and quality of life. Brain Age and Wii Fit U are great pieces of software, so this should be really exciting. Especially if they make it work with the Fit Meter that I'm always wearing.

Nintendo should drop the Wii U, and start to work on their next console.

I think that will just be a waste of time. They should give it a nice price drop and add a few new features that will make somebody choose the wii U over an Xboxone. I don't think giving up on a console is ever the answer unless you plan on going third party.

No they shouldn't, that would sink them for certain! If word got out that they were planning to abandon the Wii-U in these times, who would bother developing for it? Customers that bought a Wii-U would lose trust in Nintendo and might not buy their next console. It's understandable in a market like the virtual boy which never really took off in the first place to cancel, but the Wii-U has too many users and media hawks watching to reverse ship now.
