It's a game and I think it should have never existed.

I want Mario to take a break. The most recent one looks fun enough but too many have just been Super Mario Bros rehashed.

 

Also, Pokemon. I enjoyed it back in the day but it's all just samey dreck now. I went through an annoying cave and beat the elite four twice already in the late 90s and early 2000s. Why would I want to do it again in 2014? A scattering of double/triple battles or mega evolutions isn't enough to justify all the same drudgery.

 

Meme-based games can go die in a sewage-filled pit. Slender, Catlateral Damage (some inane lolcats thing made in Unity), garbage like that drags all of gaming down a little more with each release...

Also, CoD and Halo both should take a break too. The FPS genre doesn't have to be just military or sci-fi yet those two series have led to it basically devolving to that point.

I have.

I decided to give it a go at a friend's house.

I actually ended up playing for 2 hours.

 

I couldn't for the life of me figure out the controls, the actual POINT of the game, and trying to see what is so great about the game.

 

The game is just about building things, killing for food, looking for diamonds, and building MORE things.

I just see it as pointless. There is no real objective.

 

I don't like games like that.

Ah, sorry to hear that. Well, it's not for everyone. I personally like it. Making my own objectives, or, you could play on a server, or install mods. It isn't restricted to just building and mining. Though I don't think saying it should never have existed isn't really necessary. It also doesn't have fans like Call of Duty and Halo.

Yeah, it pretty much is. Building, mining, and a rudimentary combat system. Even with mods, there's not a whole lot you can do beyond those restrictions. You can add more stuff to build, new stuff to mine, or flesh out combat a bit...But the basic restrictions are still there and even combat mods are limited in what they can do to add to the system. And even modding it can be far too much trouble as you're limited only to what modders are willing to create. Some mods will never exist simply because no modder will create them.

 

And talk about making your own objectives but there aren't too many you can make beyond "build [x]" or "kill [x] amount of [y]" or other MMO-esque goals. There are mods that enable building some pretty complex objectives (some to the point that entire questlines and RPG-esque plotlines could be made, programmed NPCs and all) but the process of actually getting that stuff built and playable detracts immensely from the enjoyment of playing through it. (Imagine designing a game, then playing through the game. You already know every single thing that will happen because you designed every single thing that will happen, thus degrading the playing experience.)

 

But it really shouldn't be in this thread anyway. Not because it doesn't need to die (I don't care too much either way - It's nice to play sometimes but boredom sets in fast because it is quite monotonous) but because it is not a game.

 

Minecraft is a sandbox in a nearly-literal sense. You can dig into it (literally, via mining) and build stuff up but there's no real game there just as there's no real game in a literal sandbox. It's a toy, and creative things can be done with it as with many good toys...But as a game, it is kinda suckish.

there is actually at least one "boss" in the game.....The Ender Dragon. and to even get to him you need to kill a LOT of Endermen. Use the eye of ender that they drop and craft somethign else (I forget what it is) and then you use that item to locate a stronghold where an and Portal is, which then you need to activatae.
