@@Grapz224,

Mantorok thought the question over. Stupid as this pony may be, he posed a valid question. Why only send one guard? Then he chuckled a bit as he realized Celestia's plan. She was a wily one alright. She knew of his runic magic and probably expected him to work as a guard. She had no way of knowing about the Tome of Eternal Darkness and the fact that he'd never take it outside of town.

Wind Sonnet.

@@Torrent505,

@@Pripyat Pony,

@@Malinter,

Sonnet sulked away up her tree. Foolish fools, foolishly fooling with their foolish schemes... of course nothing dangerous was nearby - she was here! she didn't need minding like a little filly: much as some of the tribe seemed to not believe such to be the case.

The crystalline pegasus settled down in the upper branches again.

'Every single time... I'll show them danger if they don't leave me alone!'

'No you won't.'

'Of course I will! I don't need their lecturing and treats - can't even have a minute to myself without their hassle, and they didn't even want me for anything!'

'You'd only be bored if they didn't. You like the company anyway... sort of...'

Now this was just glorious: she was arguing with herself. See how they had disturbed her? She wouldn't be able to get comfortable again for the rest of the day, all because of the herdmaster's paranoia.

Never quite forgotten.

Malinter proceeded to walk though the forest. Taking in the sounds and smells helped to calm his soul but dragging up those memories had put him in a bad mood. it had been 100 years since that bloodsoaked day and yet it played so clearly in his mind. He could recall every wound he'd taken and how in his rage he had crushed their skulls for having the guts to even dare attacking him. he'd been eating Equibane in small doses at this point to counter its addictive properties. But with death on the horizon as his expedition was surrounded. He'd decided on using a concentrated dose, he'd calculated it would enhance his strength 100 times but it would eventually kill him. He just wanted to kill as many as he could and perhaps by sometime for the others to escape... they were the first to die.

The equibane had improved his strength and speed before but always he had been able to revert back. This time the transformation went out of control, he could barely think as his flesh and bones reformed him into a hulking behemoth. his consciousness sank into oblivion leaving only a feral monster in its place that proceeded to attack anything within reach. He recalled his friends voices and was sure they were trying to calm him.

When he had came too. Everything was dead. Everything. He was spawled on a mound of corpses.  Each and every one of them killed by a powerful blow to the chest or skull. He's staggered from the top of the mound, a mixture of his aching muscles and his eyes being so much higher off the ground than he was used to. He searched for his friends. Hoping one of them had escaped. But one by one he accounted for them all. There was no mistaking thier blood was on his hooves. His enchanced senses even catching the scent of their blood in his fur.

He buried all of them but left the other ferals to rot in a heap. To this day many ponies believed the place to be cursed, the great pile of bones left undistrubed.

Malinter looked at the sun though the canopy of trees and wondered. Did she ever get his last letter?

He decided to visit the ruins of the frontier town in the Badlands. It was abandoned now of course. But nostalgia had him in its grip, the desire to simply walk rough a town like the regular pony he had once been too strong.

He'd have to be quick. Powerful as he was, night would soon be upon him and the night favoured creatures even he would rather not deal with. With a deep breath the galloped though the forest to return to the place where he had first set hoof in the badlands.

@Everypony

The train sped on. The driver was keen to drop his charges at the station, and head back. Something about that abandoned town gave him the shivers. He couldn't help it; the place hadn't been lived in for decades, now it seemed as tho it was only populated by ghosts. The train track was rarely used, but it was kept maintained for this kind of mission, tho few ponies ever penetrated the lands beyond the Badlands. Any that did never returned.

Glory sat alone, studying her book. She'd opened it at the chapter which described the Equibane and it even had a picture. Staring at the picture, Glory wondered about the plant, and its magical properties. She also wondered about the passage she'd read in another book describing a similar mission to the one she was on now. What had happened to those ponies?

Lightning saw Malinter making off by himself and wondered what was up. He decided to include the abandoned town in his patrol route. It would be best; after all, the wild cats had been known to go even there. There had been two foals taken by the cats recently, and Lightning was angry. If he saw any of those cats, he'd smash their skulls in.

~~~
Hours later, the train wearily drew into the station in the abandoned frontier town. The station house, like the town shops and dwelling places, was slowly falling to pieces. The driver blew a blast on his whistle as the signal for the research team to leave the train. Glory stepped off on to the ramshackle platform, looking about her. A tumbleweed cliched across the platform as the research team disembarked. The moment that everypony was off, the train left, as tho scared to remain in the dead town for long.
@Train
Soul had been riding in the train next to Mantorok, trying to get any detail out of him that would re-kindle his memory. at his name, he remembered.
"Mantorok it is then, eh? I swear I knew you from somewhere, but that confirms it! Years ago, back in training, a pony by that name had used unique magic to save towns from starvation. The pony, I remember, was very old at the time. But this was years ago, I had assumed you had died of old age. Your magic must be VERY powerful to keep you alive for this long." He laughed and then quickly said "So I guess this means I am not the oldest pony here."
He turned towards Western. "My name is Soul. Retired Royal Guard." He went around the train, introducing Western to the other ponies. "So that makes two Herbalists, yet only one guard. Very odd..."
As they got off the train, Soul quickly made a plan. He turned towards the general group, and said: (OOC: I am basing this on what I know of Desert Survival, so correct me if you think anything is wrong)
"Keep together. I do not know what supplies the rest of you brought, but we'll need to find a secure water source before attempting to locate Equibane. I only brought a weeks worth of water, and only for one pony, so we don't have much. Artemis, you'll be the quickest of the group. Scout ahead, and report back anything you find. stay far enough ahead that we can see you. The rest of us will travel together. somepony needs to mark a trail behind us, so we can find the train station again when we are done here. Due to Mantorok's... Crippling... he'll be the slowest. Our speed will depend on him. Glory, is there any way you could heal him to make him move faster? Everypony else, take off anything that might weigh you down, as it will only increase our water intake."
With that said, he took off his armour, folded it, and put it into his pack. He then took out a small headband and put it on.
"Any questions?"
"I can move just as fast as you. My age does not make me a liability" Mantorok smirked, nodding at his servant. The servant grunted in response and pawed the ground. "My slave will let me keep up with you and if we run into any runes, I won't need him" Mantorok grumbled, crawling onto the back of his servant. The Tome of Eternal Darkness had imparted upon him a scholarly knowledge of runes and considering how many of them were scattered everywhere, it would be a matter of ease to find a Narokath and Santak circle of power. Those were the healing runes and if he found them, they'd give him enough energy to move around for a bit.
"Also, if food and water are a concern, you may take a bite out of me" Mantorok said flatly, not joking in the slightest. He felt no pain from others anymore and considering how ravaged his body was, it was of little concern to him to lose a few chunks. There was a reason why some local ponies had nick named him the Patron of Death and Birth.
Malinter was galloping at even greater speed. He'd felt it before he had heard it, the rumbling vibration though the ground...
It can't be. It can't be...
The thought raced though his mind over and over until he found an overlook to survey the ruined town. Then he saw it. A locomotive pulling a rather small train of carraiges. A small part of him was happy to see a piece of equestrian engineering after so long but that joy was drowned by the knowledge of the train's cargo. There could be only one reason this train was here. The Equibane.
Anger flooded into his system. Did she not get his letter? Did he not explain clearly how that plant must never leave the badlands? Had those deaths been for NOTHING!
He could make out the shapes of ponies emerging for the train.
Perhaps he needed to make sure they got his message, personally.
He leapt down from the overlook and approached the town. Let us see who she has sent to follow in our footsteps...
You have been rude enough to publicly disgrace me in front of all these ponies by revealing the fact that i am not quite... aligned with the law."
She gritted her teeth before she continued blowing of the steam by expressing her own anger.
"As a pony i do not break laws for fun. Besides it is my duty to disobey unfair, unfair, ridiculous and one-sided laws... As a ranger i am bound by the laws that preserve nature... And i am most certainly NOT a criminal, and you will NOT disrespect me by labeling me as such!"
Each denial of those lies was followed by a tap of the earth strong enough to send vibes of her refusal to be felt by her hooves upon the ground. She proceeded to back down and stretch her wings... she was tired of the closed space of the train and she had to be ready to fly anytime. In the meantime Lykos proceeded to smell him with suspicious curiosity and inspecting eyes. His black fur with white/silver underbelly and eyes shined in the light a bit. Artemis took good care of him by grooming him whenever he requested. This wolf was different than the others... it was... awakened.
@,
Mantorok chuckled as he saw her breakdown.  Well, something was up with that mare.
Note, mare has criminal past. Blackmail?
So far, she had the most weaknesses. Still, being presumptous was a fatal mistake. These were mere assumptions and she needed further study before being sure of them. He liked her though, she knew that certain rules were meant to be broken. Out of all of them, she would most likely be the most receptive to his plan. Moving up to her(rather his servant moved him up to her), he whispered something in her ear.
"I agree. We must protect the world, even if some laws are broken" he hissed
Saronyx had thought it better to hold his tongue for the time being, finding nothing to say that would be of any constructive nature. He contented himself to simply watching the rest of the researchers, listening to their various discussions. Eventually, the train arrived, they boarded and were on their way. Still Saron chose to hold his tongue, simply resting on his own and poring the knowledge he had of the plant they sought. Even for him, there wasn't much that was known. It was always difficult to view the Badlands. Perhaps the Equibane had something to do with that? It was very possible. Eventually he allowed himself to drift into sleep until such time as they arrived to their destination, cancelling out the sounds of his companions.
He did not know the passage of the time, but the sound of the train's whistle brought Saron out of his sleeping state, simultaneously notifying their arrival. He blinked the sleep from his eyes for a second then hopped off of his seat, stretching for a second before trotting out of the train after the rest of the group, Corvus hopping along behind him. As soon as the entire team was off the locomotive, the train left. Saronyx paid it no mind, instead casting his gaze over the town. Corvus had taken wing and alighted on a sagging roof a short distance off, staring down at the group. The Crystal pony allowed himself some amusement at how well the large, black bird fit into the atmosphere of the ghost town. But he hadn't come here to admire the scenery. Leaving the raven to his perch, Saronyx turned his attention to Soul and Mantorok, the former outlining basic survival tactics for such an environment. That was wise, and the Crystal was glad that at least one of them decided to bring it up. Any words that he had been going to say however were lost when he caught Mantorok's response, offering that they could consume portions of him if need be.
Saron decided then and there that he did not like this stallion. He kept a 'pony' that he referred to simply as a slave, and even reprimanded another of the group for perceiving it with some measure of equinity, and now he was suggesting they resort to cannibalism. Saron himself had been a slave at one point, as had many of the Crystal ponies in the world these days. Needless to say, he was greatly opposed to it, and the concept of cannibalism did not sit well with him in the slightest. He had been in the process of working his way over to Glory, who as far as he was aware was heading up this expedition, when the sound of Corvus' coarse cawing caught his attention. The Crystal stallion looked up at the raven as the black bird flapped his wings emphatically, before taking flight and swooping over the research team, still crying out for their attention. Whether they paid attention to him or not, the avian took wing off in a opposite direction of the tracks before circling back around and hovering for a few seconds before winging off again. Saronyx watched him for a short time before looking at his companions and speaking up, "Excuse me, I do not mean to change the subject or interrupt any of these, undoubtedly important, disputes, but I believe my bird has seen something." He was unable to know what had sparked the raven's behavior, but in the time Saron had the bird, he proved useful on many occasions.
(Fireleaf has screamed loud enough for most of you to hear... Just mentioning it :3)
A loud shriek an a terrified growl resonated through the forest. The sound was so loud an entire flock of birds left their nests out of fear. Branches were breaking, and several animals left their shelter to see what was going on. Eventually the terrified growl turned silent. Then a single roar of victory, followed by silence.
Fireleaf was panting. His heart was thumping in his chest, making his hot blood flow through his veins, feeding his brain with high concentration adrenaline. He had a maniacal grin on his face as he stood over the large cat's body, a spear driven straight through its heart. He was drooling and shaking. The thrill of the hunt gave him an exhilarating boost, almost just as powerful as equibane. The way he had pounced this stupid animal had been an impulsive act.
He opened his mouth, revealing a few very frightening rows of sharp teeth. He knew that most of his tribe wouldn't dare just attack a cat like this, let alone eat one. He didn't kill this being for feeding his tribe anyway. He had killed it because it was trespassing his territory. He had killed it because his predatory instinct had told him to...
He jumped down on the dead animals chest, taking a big chomp out of his throat. The blood poured down his neck and his dirty dreadlock mane, which was already filthy of dried up blood of his previous victims. He gobbled up the piece of meat and muscles. He looked at the tiger again and smiled. "In your place, weakling..." He said to himself.
Then his ears suddenly perked up. He had heard something very far away. A group of ponies were chatting. They were too far away to pick up distinct voices, but he was sure they were tribesponies. Any outsiders would have surely been spotted by either him or one of his comrades.
He sniffed in the air. He smelled something very far away. He closed his eyes to focus on the smell. It was familiar. It triggered a memory in his mind. He sniffed a few times, and suddenly his bloodshot eyes opened wide. Equibane. His lid twitched as he looked in the direction where the smell was coming from. Equibane...
He completely forgot about the tiger he had just killed, leaving his spear inside its body as he started running at full speed. Even though he was large... Very large... He barely made sound at all. He knew exactly where to place his hooves to make sure he was next to inaudible. He hid in the shadows of the trees as well. His coat had a good camouflage color for sneaking. It was all natural to him. But as the smell of Equibane grew stronger, he slowly let go of subtlety. His swift stride slowly turned into a maddening charge. Equibane.
He realized he was slowly nearing the edge of the badlands. If he weren't mindlessly focused on the Equibane that was nearing, he would've thought that it was strange that there was equibane this far from the core of the forest. But it didn't matter to him. All that he cared about was closing in on the smell. His vision was turning red as he neared his prey.
The next thing he knew he was standing at the edge of an overlook. He gazed down to search for his prey... Only to find malinter, his elder, approaching the old town ruins. He was confused... Why was there a train there. Had these ponies not learned from their mistakes? This was his... correction... their territory... They couldn't just stroll in again immediately. Malinter was going to tell them exactly that, it seemed.
He jumped down after Malinter and caught up with him. The big stallion, somewhat bigger than him, seemed to have no clear plan of attack. Was he going for the diplomatic approach? "Malinter..." He said with his low, rough voice. "Stop... Can you not see they have the advantage of numbers. We need a plan." He said to him. It was clear that Malinter was upset, and Fireleaf felt like crushing some skulls too, but he knew better than to fight a lost cause. He eyed at his bag of Equibane. It was tempting to just take some out of it.
How would you walk, how would you talk if you thought: "Three percent of the population likes classical music, if only we could get it up to four percent we'd be back in business and all our problems would be over." How would you walk, how would you talk if you thought: "Everybody loves classical music! They just haven't found out about it yet!" It's an entirely different world. It's what you make of it that counts.
Wanderlust was now feeling particularly good, as he moved through the forest he let his magic radiant outward. This caused the plants around him to swell and grow, flowering plants would bloom and plants that would usually seek the sun instead top urn their leaves toward him. It made him feel mighty to do this, as if the forest bowed to him and he felt like the life here recognized him as some sort of Demi-god and relished it.
He didn't hesitate to make his way to one of the many tree hollows he made use of in the forest. Inside was a small gourd he lifted it out and continued to the sunny rock he used to lounge on in warm afternoons. The gourd was hollow inside and he used his magic to pull the stem free, the air began to smell of berries, alcohol and Equibane. Wanderlust had been experimenting with different ways to concentrate or filter Equibane for years now and this fermented mix of the flowers and berries was the best concoction he had so far been able to create. He laid on the warm stone, closed his eyes and drank the potion; it burned in such a pleasing way down his throat and then he felt the tingling fire spread out through his veins.
Malinter let out a groan as Fireleaf landed behind him. Idiot! He was coated in blood he preyed wasn't  that of a pony, he had that wild look in his eyes he'd seen in his fellow ferals when the scent of Equibane reached their senses. He'd tried masking his scent and staying down wind the moment he'd realised the ponies were using animals, the moment the wind changed that wolf would lock on to them in a heartbeat.
"Get out of here you fool before they catch you scent!"
He then heard the call of a bird circling above them. There cover was blown. Bloody buzzard.
He threw his saddlebags on Fireleaf.
"Take this and hide it. Eat it if you have to, They must not get any of it. I'm going to introduce myself."
He kept a single Equibane plant on himself and stepped out into the open.
Rule Number 7: Attack if it is the only option, or you are attacked."
Technicolor smiled as she trotted along, then noticed the ony who was giving her an utterly disgusted look. Offended, but trying not to laugh because of this new face she had never seen on a pony before, just smiled and waved. after a moment, she trotted over to him and whispered, "You having a bad day? why the long face?" She asked.
Malinter barked a small laugh
"You expect me to believe one such as you leads these ponies? Lies."
*Malinter looked at the weakened pony on the...Golem... creature.*
"You have the look of a pony of learning, tell me Warlock, what plant do you seek that you'd risk your frail health for? Hmmm?"
@@Malinter
Fireleaf looked confused at Malinter as he simply approached the group of ponies on his own, leaving the Equibane to him. He couldn't keep his attention on the situation for very long however. The Equibine was calling to him. Telling him to eat it all. He stared at the saddlebags on the ground intensely. What was he going to do..? Should he help Malinter and kill the intruders? Should he bring back the Equibane? Should he take it all and let the glorious surge of the beast flow through him? He stood still for a few seconds like this. Then he decided. He grabbed the saddlebags between his teeth and then threw it on his back. He then climbed up the cliff to the lookout he had just been standing on a few minutes ago.
He looked down to what the ponies were doing. They were talking... TALKING!? Malinter was actually taking the trouble to talk to these intruders These tresspassers!? To the weak and puny... weaklings!? It maddened him. But then again, he reckoned Malinter knew what he was doing. Perhaps he would be able to scare them away without a fight... That would be a shame. He had been looking forward to hunt these ponies down. He frowned. They sure were a strange bunch. Pehaps the were more trouble than expected.
He though about the task that Malinter had given him. Bring back the Equibane. As tempting as it was to eat it all on his own, his tribe needed it as well. And the tribe went before the individual. He turned around to move back into the forest, trying to find the scent of a familliar. To enhance his scent a little, he put one of the leaves in his mouth and chewed on it. Just one... It enhanced his senses. Slowly the world began to sharpen. His eyes became more potent. He could hear several creatures from far away, and the conversation going on down below... But most importantly, he found the scent he was looking for. Wanderlust.
Yet again he sprinted towards the source of the scent. Though now he knew it was not prey, but friend. He had to alert somepony, and he knew Wanderlust as a pony of wit and cunning. Together they would find a solution for sure. And at least he wouldn't have to carry the leaves around anymore. He stopped for a moment when he reached an open spot in the forest. Wanderlust was close, but he was hidden somehow. He sniffed a few times to try to locate it. After about 15 seconds, he looked at a tree to his left...
"Wanderlust? Are you there? We have a problem..." He said...
How would you walk, how would you talk if you thought: "Three percent of the population likes classical music, if only we could get it up to four percent we'd be back in business and all our problems would be over." How would you walk, how would you talk if you thought: "Everybody loves classical music! They just haven't found out about it yet!" It's an entirely different world. It's what you make of it that counts.
I found an easy way to find out if you've inspired someone. If their eyes are shining, you know you're doing it!
